This paper presents a logarithmic shear deformation theory to study the thermal buckling response of power-law FG one-dimensional structures in thermal conditions with different boundary conditions. It is assumed that the functionally graded material and thermal properties are supposed to vary smoothly according to a contentious function across the vertical direction of the beams. A P-FG type function is employed to describe the volume fraction of material and thermal properties of the graded (1D) beam. The Ritz model is employed to solve the thermal buckling problems in immovable boundary conditions. The outcomes of the stability analysis of FG beams with temperature-dependent and independent properties are presented. The effects of the thermal loading are considered with three forms of rising: nonlinear, linear and uniform. Numerical results are obtained employing the present logarithmic theory and are verified by comparisons with the other models to check the accuracy of the developed theory. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effects of various parameters on the critical thermal stability of P-FG beams. These parameters included support type, temperature fields, material distributions, side-to-thickness ratios, and temperature dependency.
This paper investigates the stability of a bi-directional functionally graded (BD-FG) cylindrical beam made of imperfect concrete, taking into account size-dependency and the effect of geometry on its stability behavior. Both buckling and dynamic behavior are analyzed using the modified coupled stress theory and the classical beam theory. The BD-FG structure is created by using porosity-dependent FG concrete, with changing porosity voids and material distributions along the pipe radius, as well as uniform and nonuniform radius functions that vary along the beam length. Energy principles are used to generate partial differential equations (PDE) for stability analysis, which are then solved numerically. This study sheds light on the complex behavior of BD-FG structures, and the results can be useful for the design of stable cylindrical microstructures.
This paper reports the numerical investigation conducted to study the influence of Local-Distortional (L-D) interaction mode buckling on post buckling strength erosion in fixed ended lipped channel cold formed steel columns. This investigation comprises of 81 column sections with various geometries and yield stresses that are carefully chosen to cover wide range of strength related parametric ratios like (i) distortional to local critical buckling stress ratio ($0.91{\leq}F_{CRD}/F_{CRL}{\leq}4.05$) (ii) non dimensional local slenderness ratio ($0.88{\leq}{\lambda}_L{\leq}3.54$) (iii) non-dimensional distortional slenderness ratio ($0.68{\leq}{\lambda}_D{\leq}3.23$) and (iv) yield to non-critical buckling stress ratio (0.45 to 10.4). The numerical investigation is carried out by conducting linear and non-linear shell finite element analysis (SFEA) using ABAQUS software. The non-linear SFEA includes both geometry and material non-linearity. The numerical results obtained are deeply analysed to understand the post buckling mechanics, failure modes and ultimate strength that are influenced by L-D interaction with respect to strength related parametric ratios. The ultimate strength data obtained from numerical analysis are compared with (i) the experimental tests data concerning L-D interaction mode buckling reported by other researchers (ii) column strength predicted by Direct Strength Method (DSM) column strength curves for local and distortional buckling specified in AISI S-100 (iii) strength predicted by available DSM based approaches that includes L-D interaction mode failure. The role of flange width to web depth ratio on post buckling strength erosion is reported. Then the paper concludes with merits and limitations of codified DSM and available DSM based approaches on accurate failure strength prediction.

Considering inverse cotangential shear strain function, the present paper studies nonlinear stability of nonlocal higher-order refined beams made of metal foams based on Chebyshev-Ritz method. Based on inverse cotangential beam model, it is feasible to incorporate shear deformations needless of shear correction factor. Metal foam is supposed to contain different distributions of pores across the beam thickness. Also, presented Chebyshev-Ritz method can provide a unified solution for considering various boundary conditions based on simply-supported and clamped edges. Nonlinear effects have been included based upon von-karman's assumption and nonlinear elastic foundation. The buckling curves are shown to be affected by pore distribution, geometric imperfection of the beam, nonlocal scale factor, foundation and geometrical factors.

A new mathematical model and its finite element formulation for the non-linear stress-strain analysis of a planar beam strengthened with plates bolted or adhesively bonded to its lateral sides is presented. The connection between the layers is considered to be flexible in both the longitudinal and the transversal direction. The following assumptions are also adopted in the model: for each layer (i.e., the beam and the side plates) the geometrically linear and materially non-linear Bernoulli's beam theory is assumed, all of the layers are made of different homogeneous non-linear materials, the debonding of the beam from the side-plates due to, for example, a local buckling of the side plate, is prevented. The suitability of the theory is verified by the comparison of the present numerical results with experimental and numerical results from literature. The mechanical response arising from the theoretical model and its numerical formulation has been found realistic and the numerical model has been proven to be reliable and computationally effective. Finally, the present formulation is employed in the analysis of the effects of two different realizations of strengthening of a characteristic simply supported flexural beam (plates on the sides of the beam versus the tension-face plates). The analysis reveals that side plates efficiently enhance the bearing capacity of the flexural beam and can, in some cases, outperform the tensile-face plates in a lower loss of ductility, especially, if the connection between the beam and the side plates is sufficiently stiff.
The purpose of this research is to study the nonlinear free vibration and post-buckling analysis of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beams resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation. Uniformly and functionally graded distributions of single walled carbon nanotubes as reinforcing phase are considered in the polymeric matrix. The modified form of rule of mixture is used to estimate the material properties of CNTRC beams. The governing equations are derived employing Euler-Bernoulli beam theory along with energy method and Hamilton's principle. Applying von $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n's$ strain-displacement assumptions, the geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration. The developed governing equations with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities are solved using variational iteration method (VIM) and the analytical expressions and numerical results are obtained for vibration and stability analysis of nanocomposite beams. The presented comparative results are indicative for the reliability, accuracy and fast convergence rate of the solution. Eventually, the effects of different parameters, such as foundation stiffness, volume fraction and distributions of carbon nanotubes, slenderness ratio, vibration amplitude, coefficients of elastic foundation and boundary conditions on the nonlinear frequencies, vibration response and post-buckling loads of FG-CNTRC beams are examined. The developed analytical solution provides direct insight into parametric studies of particular parameters of the problem.
An efficient numerical method is developed to estimate the elasto-plastic post-buckling strength of space-framed structures. The inelastic ultimate strength of beam-columns and frames is evaluated by the parametric study. Applying the improved plastic hinge analysis that evaluate the gradual stiffness decrease effects due to spread of plasticity, elasto-plastic post-buckling behavior of steel frames is investigated considering the various residual stress distributions. Introducing the plastification parameter that represent pread of plasticity in the element and performing parametric study of equivalent element force and member idealization, finite-element solutions for the elasto-plastic analysis of space frames are compared with the results by plastic region analysis, shell elements and experimental results.

In this paper a dynamic behavior(natural frequency) of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to follower force is presented. In addition, an analysis of the flutter and buckling instability of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a follower compressive load is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter instability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. Besides, the effect of the crack's intensity and location on the flutter follower force is studied. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations.
The Rayleigh-Ritz procedure based on energy method is used to present analytically the natural frequencies and the critical buckling loads for four types of loading conditions: (1) uniaxial, (2) biaxial, (3) positive shear and (4) negative shear, of the rectangular, composite plates unidirectionally stiffened with box beam type stiffeners. In analysis the discrete stiffener theory is adopted to present the effect of stiffeners in the plate structure. The convergence study is presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the results. Contour plots of the vibrated and buckled mode shapes are shown for some examples. The effect of various parameters such as numbers, position, aspect ratio of stiffener and layer angle, aspect ratio of plate are focused.
In the current study, ordinary design of Represstessed Pre-Flex (RPF) girder by classical beam theory and numerical model taking buckled shape into consideration were compared with field-survey data to find imperfections on the RPF girder before prestressing and after preflexion. It should be noted that the ordinary design do not consider deformed shape of steel girder in RPF beam. The deformed shapes of steel girder due to the incomplete fabrication that could be caused by self-weight, preflexion misalignment, existence of lateral bracing at mid-span and stiffness of reaction frame were found using a newly developed model which was verified against a deformation survey conducted on actual RPF girder in the field. The final observed deformed shapes of RPF after concrete shrinkage and before prestressing were classified into W, C and Unsymmetric shapes in regard to both survey and analytical results. The deformation survey showed negligible amount of unwanted deformation compared to the large size of the RPF girders. The shallower width of the bottom flange of steel girder caused amount of lateral torsional buckling under self-weight and preflexion thereby affecting the unwanted final overall shape of the RPF girders. However, it was found that the unwanted deformation of RPF girders by fabrication errors even though it is negligible compared to the size of the girder, caused unsymmetrical stress contours in concrete and additional tensile stress and raise some safety issues.
