The immobilization of a microorganism has been rapidly progressed with the development of biotechnology in recent years. Although it has been used as a tool to isolate products from biological media in various areas, it has not yet been practiced in the treatment of waste water. In this paper, we suggest a possibility to apply the immobilization technique In the recirculating aquaculture system. We examined the ability of $NH_4^+$ removal by nitrifier consortium immobilized in $Ba^{++}-alginate$, k-carrageenan and agar bead at the concentration of 50 g/L, respectively. In order to use the immobilized nitrifier consortium as media in the fludized bed reactor, the strength of bead was measured. $Ba^{++}-alginate$ as a support material showed higher strength of bead. Also, the nitrifier consortium immobilized in $Ba^{++}-alginate$ showed higher nitrification activity that could remove 20 mg/L ammonium ion than those immobilized in other two support materials, carrageenan and agar. The immobilized nitrifier consortium showed better nitrification activity than free nitrifier consortium.

The GMA welding process involves large number of interdependent variables which may affect product quality, productivity and cost effectiveness. The relationships between process parameters for a fillet joint and bead geometry are complex because a number of process parameters are involved. To make the automated GMA welding, a method that predicts bead geometry and accomplishes the desired mechanical properties of the weldment should be developed. The developed method should also cover a wide range of material thicknesses and be applicable for all welding position. For the automatic welding system, the data must be available in the form of mathematical equations. In this study a new intelligent model with genetic algorithm has been proposed to investigate interrelationships between welding parameters and bead geometry for the automated GMA welding process. Through the developed model, the correlation between process parameters and bead geometry obtained from the actual experimental results, predicts that data did not show much of a difference, which means that it is quite suitable for the developed genetic algorithm. Progress to be able to control the process parameters in order to obtain the desired bead shape, as well as the systematic study of the genetic algorithm was developed on the basis of the data obtained through the experiments in this study can be applied. In addition, the developed genetic algorithm has the ability to predict the bead shape of the experimental results with satisfactory accuracy.
In this study, the sphericity of calcium alginate gel beads was optimized using response surface methodology. The optimum conditions for bead sphericity were a concentration of 2.24% sodium alginate, a flow rate of 0.059 mL/sec for the sodium alginate solution, and a 459 rpm rotation for the calcium chloride solution. The predicted and experimental bead sphericities under the optimum conditions were 94.5 and 96.7%, respectively, showing close agreement. We also investigated the processing condition effects for the physical properties of the optimized calcium alginate gel beads. Immersion in hot water slightly decreased bead size and rupture strength. NaCl treatment increased bead size and decreased rupture strength. While the pH of the calcium chloride solution had little effect on bead sphericity, the bead sizes and gel strengths decreased with longer times in each pH solution. The beads coated with pectin and glucomannan showed no significant changes in sphericity, but their sizes decreased with time. The coated beads showed higher rupture strengths than the uncoated beads.
Former studies revealed that sepiolite thermally treated at high temperature have high adsorption capacity for phosphate. However, its micron size (75 ㎛) limits its application to water treatment. In this study, we synthesized sepiolite impregnated polysulfone (PSf) beads to separate it easily from an aqueous solution. PSf beads with different sepiolite ratios were synthesized and their efficiencies were compared. The PSf beads with 30% impregnated sepiolite (30SPL-PSf bead) possessed the optimum sepiolite ratio for phosphate removal. Kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic adsorption experiments were performed using the 30SPL-PSf bead. Equilibrium adsorption was achieved in 24 h, and the pseudo-first-order model was suitable for describing the phosphate adsorption at different reaction times. The Langmuir model was appropriate for describing the phosphate adsorption onto the 30SPL-PSf bead, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the 30SPL-PSf bead obtained from the model was 24.48 mg-PO4/g. Enthalpy and entropy increased during the phosphate adsorption onto the 30SPL-PSf bead, and Gibb's free energy at 35 ℃ was negative. An increase in the solution pH from 3 to 11 induced a decrease in the phosphate adsorption amount from 27.30 mg-PO4/g to 21.54 mg-PO4/g. The competitive anion influenced the phosphate adsorption onto the 30SPL-PSf bead was in the order of NO3- > SO42- > HCO3-. The phosphate breakthrough from the column packed with the 30SPL-PSf bead began after ~2000 min, reaching the influent concentration after ~8000 min. The adsorption amounts per unit mass of 30SPL-PSf and removal efficiency were 0.775 mg-PO4/g and 61.6%, respectively. This study demonstrates the adequate performance of 30SPL-PSf beads as a filter for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions.

For efficient welding it is necessary to maintain stability of the welding process and control the shape of the welding bead. The welding quality can be controlled by monitoring important parameters, such as, the Arc Voltage, Welding Current and Welding Speed during the welding process. Welding systems use either a vision sensor or an Arc sensor, both of which are unable to control these parameters directly. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain necessary bead geometry without automatically controlling the welding parameters through the sensors. In this paper we propose a novel approach using fuzzy logic and neural networks for improving welding qualify and maintaining the desired weld bead shape. Through experiments we demonstrate that the proposed system can be used for real welding processes. The results demonstrate that the system can efficiently estimate the weld bead shape and remove the welding detects.
Chitin, the natural polymer has been known as harmless and innoxious material to human and has been also known to be biodegradable. Chitosan which was prepared by the deacetylation of chitin, was propionylated to obtain porous bead shaped propionyl chitosan and its possibility as a water-absorbant polymer was investigated. Propionyl chitosan porous bead was synthesized by acylation reaction using emulsion method of acetic acid solution and propionyl chitosan was partially crosslinked using ethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether. Through the experiment varying the moles of propionic anhydride, reaction time and reaction temperature, best results for water-absorption ability was obtained at reaction condition of 5 moles of propionic anhydride, 10 hours of reaction time and $22^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature. The absorption ability to the distilled water, various salt solutions, artificial urine and artificial blood, absorption time and retention of water of synthesized porous bead were investigated and also mechanical strength after crosslinking was determined.

Investigations of process parameters are essential when fabricating high-quality parts using additive manufacturing. This study investigates the change in the mechanical characteristics of a SUS316L specimen fabricated using selective laser melting based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio. The SUS316L powder particles were spherical and 35 ㎛ in size. Single-bead and hexahedral shape deposition experiments were performed sequentially. A single bead experiment was performed to obtain the bead overlap ratios for different laser parameters utilizing laser power and scan speed as experimental parameters. A hexahedral shape deposition experiment was also performed to observe the difference in mechanical properties, such as the internal porosity, surface roughness, and hardness, based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio of the three-dimensional printed part. Laser power, scan speed, overlap ratio, and layer thickness were chosen as parameters for the hexahedral shape deposition experiment. Accordingly, the energy density applied for three-dimensional printing, and the experimental parameters were calculated, and the energy density and bead overlap ratio for fabricating parts with good properties have been suggested.

Lab scale experiments were conducted in order to assess the applicability of $CaCO_{3}$-alginate beads as neutralizer for the high cell density cultivation and prepare the direct vat inoculation cultures of isolated sourdough lactic acid bacteria. With increasing the amount of bead and decreasing the diameter of bead in acidic solution, the neutralizing effect of $CaCO_{3}$-alginate bead became higher. In batch process with $CaCO_{3}$-alginate beads, Lactobacillus amylovorus DU-21 isolated from sourdough showed the highest viable cell counts and optical density in MRS broth. The values of viable cell counts and optical density were 9.996 log CFU/mL and 3.97, respectively. Experiments on the conditions which increase viability during lyophilization were carried out and the following results were obtained; 15% glycerol revealed the high cryoprotective effect on the concentrated cultures during lyophilization among the two cryoprotective agents. Consequently, $CaCO_{3}$-alginate beads and 15% glycerol were found to be useful not only to cultivate Lactobacillus amylovorus DU-21 but also to preserve strain.

In 1his paper, applicability of laser welding to joining process of single crystal nickel base superalloy turbine blades was investigated. Because heat input of laser welding is more precisely controlled 1han TIG welding, it is possible to optimize solidification microstructure of the welds. Since in single crystal nickel base superalloy the crystal orientation have a significant effect on the strength, it is important to control the solidification microstructure in the fusion zone. A single crystal nickel base supera1loy, CMSX-4, plates were bead-on welded and butt welded using a $CO_2$ laser. The effects of microstructure and crystal orientation on properties of the weld joints were investigated. In bead-on weldling, welding directions were deviated from the base metal [100] direction by 0, 5, 15 and 30 degrees. The welds with deviation angles of 15 and 30 degrees showed fusion zone transverse cracks. As the deviation angles became larger, the fusion zone had more cracking. In the cross section microstructure, the fusion zone grains in 0 and 5 degrees welds grew epitaxially from the base metal spins except for the bead neck regions. The grains in the bead neck regions contained stray crystals. As deviation angles increased, number of the stray crystals increased. In butt welding, the declinations of the crystal orientation of the two base metals varied 0, 5 and 10 degrees. All beads had no cracks. In the 5 degrees bead, the cross section and surface microstructures showed that the fusion zone grains grew epitaxially from the base metal grains. However, the 10 degrees bead, the bead cross section and surface contained the stray crystals in the center of the welds. Orientations of the stray crystals accorded with the heat flow directions in the weld pool. When the welding direction was deviated from the base metal [100] direction, cracks appeared in the area including the stray crystals. The cracks developed along the grain boundaries of the stray crystals with high angles in the final solidification regions at the center of the welds. The fracture surfaces were covered with liquid film. The cracks, therefore, found to be solidification cracks due to the presence of low melting eutectic. As the results, in both bead-on welding and butt welding the deviation angles should be control within 5 degrees for preventing the fusion zone cracks. To investigate the mechanical properties of the weld joints, high temperature tensile tests for bead-on welds with deviation angles of 0 and 5 degrees and the butt welds with dec1ination angles of 0, 5 and 10 degrees were conducted at 1123K. The the tensile strength of all weld joints were more 1han 800MPa that is almost 80% of the tensile strength of the base metal. The strength of the laser weld joints were more than twice that of tue TIG weld joints with a filler metal of Inconel 625. The results reveals 1hat laser welding is more effective joining process for single crystal nickelbase superalloy turbine blades 1han TIG welding.
