  • There nay be collisions among beacons from several full function devices in IEEE 802.15.4 sensor networks. These collision of beacons may cause devices to lose time synchronization, and thus be unable to association. To solve this problem, the IEEE 802.15.4b defines a new Post Beacon Period(PBP), but it does not still alleviate the beacon collision problem. In this paper, we propose two automatic beacon alignment schemes that a node itself can decide its beacon start time using its short address that has been assigned during association. We also simulate and investigate our proposed automatic beacon collision avoidance schemes using NS-2 simulator.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 is designed for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR_WPAN) and it attempts to provide a low data rate, low power, low cost wireless networking on the device-level communication. In this paper, I have established a realistic environment for the effect of collision in nonbeacon-enabled mode and beacon enabled mode. The data throughput and delivery ratio are investigated as the performance metrics.

  • In beacon-enabled mode, beacon collision is a significant problem for the scalability of cluster-tree wireless sensor networks. In this paper, multi-channel time division scheduling (MCTS) is proposed to prevent beacon collisions and provide scalability. A coordinator broadcasts a beacon frame, including information on allocated channels and time-slots, and a new node determines its own channel and time-slot. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by comparing the proposed approach with a typical ZigBee. MCTS prevents beacon collisions in cluster-tree wireless sensor networks. It enables large-scale wireless sensor networks based on a cluster tree to be scalable and effectively constructed.

  • In ubiquitous environments, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) protocol is a typical service used to improve the quality of life for humans. The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) protocol, a part of ITS, needs further study with regards to its support for high reliability, high speed mobility, data transmission efficiency, and so on. The IEEE 802.11 standard provides a high data rate channel, but it was designed for peer-to-peer network protocols. IEEE 802.11p also provides a high data rate channel, however, it only facilitates communication between roadside and on-board equipment. A VANET has characteristics that enable its topology to change rapidly; it can also be expanded to a multi-hop range network during communication. Therefore, the VANET protocol needs a way to infer the current topology information relating to VANET equipped vehicles. In this paper, we present the Multi-Beacon MAC Protocol, and propose a method to resolve the problem of beacon collisions in VANET through the use of this Multi-Beacon MAC protocol. Evaluation of the performance of Multi-Beacon MAC protocol by means of both mathematical analyses and simulation experiments indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce beacon collisions and improve the throughput and the delay between vehicles in VANET systems.

  • In this paper, we propose a hexagon model-based efficient beacon frame scheduling approach for wireless sensor networks. The existing beacon frame scheduling approaches use a lot of slots and subslots for the beacon frame scheduling. Thus, the data from source nodes are not efficiently delivered to a sink node. Also in case a sink node needs to broadcast a beacon frame to the nodes in the network, delivering the beacon frame to the network nodes is not efficient as well. Thus, to solve the problem, we use a hexagon model to find the number of slots and subslots for the beacon frame scheduling. By using them for the beacon frame scheduling, the proposed approach performs better than other approaches in terms of the data transmission delay, the number of received data, the beacon transmission delay and the number of relaying the beacon frames.

  • Various applications based on the location information of things are developed as entering by the ubiquitous computing age. Wireless sensor networks are suitable to indoor location-based service because of the important features such as low-power consumption, low-cost, easy deployment, etc. To recognize the distance between nodes, the indoor location-based system transmits both ultrasound signal and radio signal periodically. However, increment of the number of deployed sensor nodes make lots of collision and interference among the signals and it can degrade the accuracy of location-based system. In this paper, we propose a beacon management mechanism to increase the probability of transmission chance to the nearest beacon from the listener. It can minimize collision and interference and reduce the error probability due to the characteristics of ultrasound.

  • Recently, with the development of technology for the virtual reality services, the virtual reality technology has been to use various application services. However, because it is difficult to secure a non-Augmented Reality Virtual Reality in this case it has a vision problem that can be fixed in a service only, not removable. In this paper, we propose a technique of application iBeacon signal by applying the technology of the indoor location-based service using a virtual reality system described in iBeacon ensure the mobility in a virtual space, and can detect the collisions with other moving objects.

  • An arbitration method is proposed to resolve a collision and arbitrate beacon transmissions in an indoor Positioning system consisting of multiple beacons and listeners. Although two or more beacons may compete to transmit signals simultaneously, a single winner in the competition is determined autonomously through the arbitration process while they are transmitting. So, it can continue to send its data, but the others give up their transmissions during the arbitration process. As a consequence, update rate for location information and channel utilization can be improved by avoiding that all beacons fail due to a collision. Once a beacon succeeds in transmitting its signal, a low-level priority is assigned to it. And a high-level priority is allocated to a beacon which gave up its transmission during arbitration process. This will guarantee every beacon has fair transmission opportunity with the arbitration method. As no centralized control is required among beacons, a Positioning system can still be easily deployed and expanded with this arbitration method.

  • In this paper, we propose WLAN CR coexistence beacon protocol for thenext WLAN network. This method can provide WLAN with high-speed data rate in new WLAN architecture and network platform based on cognitive radio technology. WLAN CR devices that enter the CR network can know UHF channels by listening CR beacon including the coexistence parameter set and start using CR channel fast. During handover of WLAN device in UHF spectrums, WLAN device that lost their channel can change available channel by obtaining the current CR channel information from the CR beacon. In advance relaying coexistence parameter set to entire CR system, WLAN CR system can prepare own candidate channel set that is different with other CR system. In CR beacon and relay delay, we show the results that WLAN CR coexistence beacon protocol supports spectrum handover efficiently and decreases the probability of collision in candidate channel set.

  • Ship ad-hoc network (SANET) extends the coverage of the maritime communication among ships with the reduced cost. To fulfill the growing demands of real-time services, the SANET requires an efficient clock time synchronization algorithm which has not been carefully investigated under the ad-hoc maritime environment. This is mainly because the conventional algorithms only suggest to decrease the beacon collision probability that diminishes the clock drift among the units. However, the SANET is a very large-scale network in terms of geographic scope, e.g., with 100 km coverage. The key factor to affect the synchronization performance is the signal propagation delay, which has not being carefully considered in the existing algorithms. Therefore, it requires a robust multi-hop synchronization algorithm to support the communication among hundreds of the ships under the maritime environment. The proposed algorithm has to face and overcome several challenges, i.e., physical clock, e.g., coordinated universal time (UTC)/global positioning system (GPS) unavailable due to the atrocious weather, network link stability, and large propagation delay in the SANET. In this paper, we propose a logical clock synchronization algorithm with multi-hop function for the SANET, namely multi-hop clock synchronization for SANET (MCSS). It works in an ad-hoc manner in case of no UTC/GPS being available, and the multi-hop function makes sure the link stability of the network. For the proposed MCSS, the synchronization time reference nodes (STRNs) are efficiently selected by considering the propagation delay, and the beacon collision can be decreased by the combination of adaptive timing synchronization procedure (ATSP) with the proposed STRN selection procedure. Based on the simulation results, we finalize the multi-hop frame structure of the SANET by considering the clock synchronization, where the physical layer parameters are contrived to meet the requirements of target applications.
