Second-order rate constants (kN) have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 3,4-dinitrophenyl 2-thiophenecarboxylate (2) with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % dimethyl sulfoxide at 25.0 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Brønsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature for the aminolysis of 2. The curved Brønsted-type plot is similar to that reported for the corresponding reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl 2- thiophenecarboxylate (1). The reactions of 1 and 2 have been suggested to proceed through the same mechanism, i.e., through a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate ($T^{\pm}$) with a change in the rate-determining step. Substrate 2 is less reactive than 1 toward weakly basic amines (e.g., $pK_a$ < 10.4) but becomes more reactive as the basicity of amines increases further. Dissection of kN into the microscopic rate constants has revealed that the reaction of 2 results in a smaller $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio but larger $k_1$ than the corresponding reaction of 1. Steric hindrance exerted by the ortho-nitro group has been suggested to be responsible for the smaller $k_1$ value found for the reactions of 1.
Arylation reactions of styrene catalyzed by Pd(CF3CO2)2-sulfides and Pd(CF3CO2)2-phosphines were investigated. The yield of trans-stilbene, the main product, increased as the basicity of the substituents on the aryl groups of the phosphines increased and the steric hindrance of the substituents decreased. The mechanism of the aryl migration of arylphosphines to styrene is proposed to involve the electrophilic attack of Pd to the phenyl group on the phosphines. The phosphine systems were found to be more effective than the sulfide ones.
The kinetics of reactions between Z-aryl thiophene-2-carbodithioates and X-pyridines in acetonitrile at 60.0 $^{\circ}C$ have been investigated. The Bronsted plots obtained for the pyridinolysis of aryl thiophene-2-carbodithioates are curved, with the center of curvature at $pK_a$ ~ 5.2 ($pK_a^{\circ}$). The Bronsted plots for these nucleophilic reactions show a change in slope from a large ( ${\beta}_X{\cong}$0.78-0.87) to a small ( ${\beta}_X{\cong}$0.33-0.35) value, which can be attributed to a change in the rate-determining step from breakdown to formation of a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate in the reaction path as the basicity of the pyridine nucleophile increases. A clear-cut change in the crossinteraction constants, ${\rho}_{XZ}$, from +0.92 to -0.23 supports the proposed mechanistic change. The breakpoint at $pK_a$ = 5.2 for R = thiophene ring in the present work is in agreement with those for the pyridinolysis of R = Me and 2-furyl, and attests to the insignificant effects of acyl group, R, on the breakpoint.
Kinetic studies of the pyridinolysis $(XC_5H_4N)$ of aryl dithiomethylacetates $(CH_3CH_2C(=S)SC_6H_4Z,\;1)$ are carried out in acetonitrile at $60.0^{\circ}C$. A biphasic Bronsted plot is obtained with a change in slope from a large $({\beta}X\;{\cong}\;0.8)$ to a small $({\beta}X\;{\cong}\;0.2)$ value at $pK_a^{\circ}$ = 5.2, which is attributed to a change in the rate limiting step from breakdown to formation of a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate, $T^{\pm}$, in reaction path as the basicity of the pyridine nucleophile increases. This mechanism is supported by the change of the cross-interaction constant ${\rho}xz$ from a large positive ( ${\rho}xz$ = +1.36) for the weakly basic pyridines to a small negative ( ${\rho}_xz$ = -0.22) value for the strongly basic pyridines. The magnitudes of ${\rho}z$ and activation parameters are also consistent with the proposed mechanism.
Physically and chemically activated carbons (ACs) exhibited high adsorption capacities for organic and inorganic pollutants compared with other adsorbents due to their expanded surface areas and wide pore volume distribution. In this work, seven steam-ACs with different burn-off have been prepared from cotton stalks. The textural properties of these sorbents were determined using nitrogen adsorption at $-196^{\circ}C$. The chemistry of the surface of the present sorbents was characterized by determining the surface functional C-O groups using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface pH, $pH_{pzc}$, and Boehm's acid-base neutralization method. The textural properties and the morphology of the sorbent surface depend on the percentage of burn-off. The surface acidity and surface basicity are related to the burn-off percentage. A theoretical model was developed to find a mathematical expression that relates the % burn-off to ash content, surface area, and mean pore radius. Also, the chemistry of the carbon surface is related to the % burn-off. A mathematical expression was proposed where % burn-off was taken as an independent factor and the other variable as a dependent factor. This expression allows the choice of the value of % burn-off with required steam-AC properties.

An UHPLC-ESI-qTOF-MS analytical method was developed for cyclopeptide alkaloids in the seeds of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae), which is a commonly used herb in Chinese and Korean traditional medicines. Considering the basicity of cyclopeptide alkaloids, a specific separation method was developed for an UHPLC system. The compounds were detected by DAD and ESI-qTOF-MS, and their fragmentation patterns were also acquired by MSE technologies. Peak-picking of major compounds was performed with nine previously isolated compounds and two reference standard compounds. Tandem MS fragmentation behaviors of type-Ia and -Ib cyclopeptide alkaloids were investigated with the acquired data to develop a strategy for dereplication of other cyclopeptide alkaloid compounds in Z. jujuba var. spinosa. Two more cyclopeptide alkaloids were tentatively identified with UHPLC-ESI-qTOF-MS using this method.
Oxidation of alkylaromatics including toluene and p-methoxytoluene has been carried out over alkali metal (AM)-containing catalysts such as AM-V/TiO2 and AM-VSb/Al2O3 in vapor-phase using oxygen as an oxidant. The selectivity for partial oxidations increases with incorporation of an alkali metal or with increasing the basicity of alkali metals (from Na to Cs), irrespective of the supports or reactants. However, the conversion is nearly constant or slightly decreasing with the addition of alkali metals in the catalyst. The increased selectivity may be related with the decreased acidity even though more detailed work is necessary to understand the effect of alkali metals in the oxidation. The AM-VSb/Al2O3 may be suggested as a potential selective catalyst for vapor-phase oxidations.

The effects of alkali promoters on the activity and selectivity of Co/NaY catalyst have been investigated. The catalysts were prepared by impregnating NaY with aqueous solutions of alkali compounds and a benzene solution of $Co_2(CO)_8$. Hydrocarbon synthesis was studied in a flow reactor under the reaction conditions : temperature = 200∼250$^{\circ}C$, space velocity = 120∼$160hr^{-1}$, pressure = 1 atm, $H_2$/CO = 1. As the basicity of alkali promoter increases, the olefin selectivity, probability of chain growth, and CO$_2$ formation increase and methane formation decreases. The activity of CO hydrogenation increases with the pH of alkali solutions.
The complex formation of p-aminoazobenzene and its derivatives with Fe(III) and Mn(II) has been studied by UV and IR spectroscopy and conductometry. The effects of solvents, donor basicity, and other factors on the formation of these complexes have been examined. The vatio of metal to ligand for the complexes formed is 1 : 1, both in the solid state and in solution. The stability constants of Fe(III)-donor and Mn(II)-donor complexes are in the range of 10$^2$∼10$^4$ and 0.1∼1, respectively. The absorptivities are ~10$^4$ and ∼10$^3$ l/mol${\cdot}$cm respectively. Thermodynamic properties such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ are calculated from their stability constants utilizing Van't Hoff equation.
The stability constants for the complexes formed between dibenzo-18-crown-6 compound and alkaline earth metal cations in dimethylsulfoxide, dimethylformamide, and acetonitrile have been obtained by conductometry at $25{\circ}C\;and\;35{\circ}C$respectively. The stability constants were increased in order of $Ca^{2+} in any solvent, and the magnitudes were found to be reversely proportional to the solvent donicities. The result could be understood in terms of ion-cavity radius concept, solvent basicity, and solvation of the cations.
