  • For the mean vector of a p-variate normal distribution ($p{\geq}3$), the optimal estimation within the class of James-Stein type decision rules under the quadratic loss are given when the underlying distribution is that of a variance mixture of normals and when the norm ${\parallel}\underline{{\theta}}{\parallel}$ in known. It also demonstrated that the optimal estimation within the class of Lindley type decision rules under the same loss when the underlying distribution is the previous type and the norm ${\parallel}{\theta}-\overline{\theta}\underline{1}{\parallel}$ with $\overline{\theta}=\frac{1}{p}\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}{\theta}_i$ and $\underline{1}=(1,{\cdots},1)^{\prime}$ is known.

  • Color image quantization is a process of selecting a set of colors to display an image with some representative colors without noticeable perceived difference. It is very important in many applications to display a true color image in a low cost color monitor or printer. The basic problem is how to display 256 colors or less colors, called color palette, In this paper, we propose improved binary tree vector quantization based on spatial sensitivity which is one of the human visual properties. We combine the weights based on the responsibility of human visual system according to changes of three Primary colors in blocks of images with the process of splitting nodes using eigenvector in binary tree vector quantization. The test results show that the proposed method generates the quantized images with fine color and performs better than the conventional method in terms of clustering the similar regions. Also the proposed method can get the better result in subjective quality test and WSNR.

  • It is well known that the MDVR beamforming outperforms the conventional delay-sum beamformer in the sense of noise rejection and bearing resolution. However, the MDVR method requires long observation time to achieve high frequency resolution. The STMV method uses the steered covariance matrix of sensor data, so it has an ability to form an adaptive weight vector from a single time-series snapshot. But it uses the same weight vector across all frequencies. In this paper, we propose an SSMV method. The basic idea of the SSMV method is to decompose a full frequency band into several subbands to acquire a weight vector for each subband, individually. Also the wrap may be divided into several subarrays in order to reduce a computational load and the bandwidth of each subband. Simulations using real sea trial data show that the proposed SSMV method has good performance with short observation time.

  • One of the basic assumptions of the regression models is that the parameter vector does not vary across sample observations. If the parameter vector is not constant for all observations in the sample, the statistical model is changed and the usual least squares estimators do not yield unbiased, consistent and efficient estimates. This study investigates the regression model with some or all parameters vary across partitions of the whole sample data when the model permits different response coefficients during unusual time periods. Since the usual test for overall homogeneity of regressions across partitions of the sample data does not explicitly identify the break points between the partitions, the testing the equality between subsets of coefficients in two or more linear regressions is generalized and combined with the test procedure to search the break point. The method is applied to find the possibility and the turning point of the structural change in the long-run unemployment rate in the usual static framework by using the regression model. The relationships between the variables included in the model are reexamined in the dynamic framework by using Vector Autoregression.

  • This study was conducted to provide a basic system to develop a molecular marker for plant cultivar protection using a recombinant DNA technology. Using Nicotiana tabacum L. plants, the potentiality in the utilization of the developed marker was examined. After homology test with several plant genomes, mouse adenosine deaminase (ADA) gene was selected as DNA source of a molecular marker for cultivar protection. As a result of the digestion of ADA gene with BamHI and Pst I, six DNA fragments were obtained, and 513 bp DNA fragment among them was selected as a possible DNA marker for cultivar protection. Selected 513 bp DNA fragment was efficiently inserted into pBI101 plasmid vector for plant transformation by using phagemid vector pBluescript II SK (+/-) as an intermediate vector. The recombinant pBI101, carrying 513 bp DNA fragment, possible markers for cultivar protection, was transformed into A. tumefaciens LBA4404. Nicotiana tabacum was transformed with A. tumefaciens LBA4404 having the recombinant pBI101 and was confirmed the transfer of 513 bp DNA fragment, a possible molecular marker for cultivar protection.

  • In this paper, we propose the LPC+-file for efficient indexing of high-dimensional image data. With the proliferation of multimedia data, there Is an increasing need to support the indexing and retrieval of high-dimensional image data. Recently, the LPC-file (5) that based on vector approximation has been developed for indexing high-dimensional data. The LPC-file gives good performance especially when the dataset is uniformly distributed. However, compared with for the uniformly distributed dataset, its performance degrades when the dataset is clustered. We improve the performance of the LPC-file for the strongly clustered image dataset. The basic idea is to adaptively partition the data space to find subspaces with high-density clusters and to assign more bits to them than others to increase the discriminatory power of the approximation of vectors. The total number of bits used to represent vector approximations is rather less than that of the LPC-file since the partitioned cells in the LPC+-file share the bits. An empirical evaluation shows that the LPC+-file results in significant performance improvements for real image data sets which are strongly clustered.

  • Vector autoregressive (VAR) models in high dimension suffer from noisy estimates, unstable predictions and hard interpretation. Consequently, the sparse vector autoregressive (sVAR) model, which forces many small coefficients in VAR to exactly zero, has been suggested and proven effective for the modeling of high dimensional time series data. This paper studies coupling measures to select non-zero coefficients in sVAR. The basic idea based on the simulation study reveals that removing the effect of other variables greatly improves the performance of coupling measures. sVAR model coefficients are asymmetric; therefore, asymmetric coupling measures such as Granger causality improve computational costs. We propose two asymmetric coupling measures, filtered-cross-correlation and filtered-Granger-causality, based on the filtered residuals series. Our proposed coupling measures are proven adequate for heavy-tailed and high order sVAR models in the simulation study.

  • Plasmid isolation of kimchi-derived Weissella cibaria KLC140 revealed six different plasmids. The smallest plasmid, pKW2124, was DNA sequenced and characterized, showing 2,126 bp with a GC content of 36.39% and five putative open reading frames (ORFs). In silico analysis of these ORFs showed ORF1 encodes a putative replication protein similar to rolling circular replication proteins from other lactic acid bacteria. However, a single-stranded intermediate was not detected when S1 nuclease was treated, suggesting it may follow theta replication. Interestingly, the replication initiation site of this plasmid is 100% identical to other plasmids from lactic acid bacteria, suggesting it may function for replication initiation. To construct a surface layer expression vector, pTSLGFP, slpA encoding the surface layer protein from Lactobacillus acidophilus was PCR amplified and fused with the gfp gene, forming a SLGFP fused gene. The plasmid pKW2124 was cloned into the XbaI site of pUC19, forming an Weissella-E. coli shuttle vector pKUW22. NheI-linearized pTSLGFP was ligated into pKUWCAT containing pKUW22 and the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene from pEK104, resulting in an 8.6 kb pKWCSLGFP surface layer expression vector. After transformation of this vector into W. cibaria KLC140, a GFP fluorescence signal was detected on the surface of the transformant, substantiating production of SLGFP fused protein and its secretion. This is the first report for construction of a Weissella surface layer expression vector, which may be useful for surface layer production of beneficial proteins in Weissella.

  • We propose an efficient scheme for camera motion characterization in MPEG-compressed video. The proposed scheme detects six types of basic camera motions through threshold-based qualitative interpretation, in which fixed thresholds are applied to motion model parameters estimated from MPEG motion vectors (MVs). The efficiency and robustness of the scheme are validated by the experiment with real compressed video sequences.

  • Wind speed and wind direction are usually taken using two parameters: wind speed and wind direction. This paper studies the average wind speed and direction calculation methods. The paper first introduces to basic wind's knowledge, and then presents several methods in calculating average wind speed and direction. Lastly some graphs are plotted base on these computational methods and the implementation of these methods in an actual buoy system.
