  • The Sm-Nd isotopic data on the Precambrian gneisses from Gyeonggi and Sobaegsan Massifs are presented and the crustal evolution of the Precambrian basements of the Korean Peninsula is discussed with that of the Precambrian basements of East Asia. Sm-Nd isochron plots on whole rock samples from Sobaegsan Massif give the following ages and initial Nd values. Biotite gneisses: $1.05{\pm}0.07$ Ga with ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}$ (1.05 Ga)= $-12.5{\pm}0.4$ ($2{\sigma}$); granitic gneisses: $1.70{\pm}0.59$ Ga with ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}$ (1.70 Ga)=$+9.5{\pm}6$($2{\sigma}$). Initial Nd isotopic evolution diagram for the Precambrian orthogneisses from Sobaegsan Massif with the Precambrian orthogneisses in northeastern China and Japan reveals the existence of early Archean depleted-mantle in east Asia and suggests the prevalence of nearly common or similar source accountable for these Precambrian gneisses. Such a common source is shown to have LREE-enriched feature and to have been formed from the depleted-mantle in the late Archean of ca. 2.6 Ga. On the other hand, the Sobaegsan granitic gneisses in Korea are concluded to have different evolution history. Our Sm-Nd study clearly discloses that some Precambrian orthogneisses from Korea had evolved from the protolith having the similar or same geochemical properties with the Precambrian orthogneisses in Japan and northeastern China. In addition, crustal formation age of Gyeonggi Massif in southern Korea may be different from that of Sobaegasn Massif.

  • HANARO, an open-tank-in-pool type research reactor of 30 MWth power in Korea, has been operating normally since its initial criticality in February, 1995. For the last about ten years, A cooling tower of a secondary cooling system has been operated normally in HANARO. Last year, the cooling tower has been overhauled for preservative maintenance including fills, eliminators, wood support, water distribution system, motors, driving shafts, gear reducers, basements, blades and etc. This paper describes the results of the overhaul. As results, it is confirmed that the cooling tower maintains a good operability through a filed test. And a cooling capability will be tested when a wet bulb temperature is maintained about 28 $^{\circ}C$ in summer and the reactor is operated with the full power.

  • Rapid industrialization and urbanization caused by the high economic growth of the country requires optimization of land usage as well as the expansion of underground space. Therefore the construction of large and deep basements is inevitable in built up areas where the braced excavation for earth retaining structures may create many problems such as settlement and damages of nearby buildings and underground utilities. In this work, some of major influential factors concerning the stability of braced excavation are investigated and the results are compared with the field observation results. The ground water table, applied strut forces, horezontal wall displacement, infilling materials in the rock joints were found to be the most critical factors influencing the stability of braced walls constructed in the layered ground. Magnituide and type of the wall deformation was closely related to the pattern of the surface settlement. The stability of braced walls are described in terms of strut forces.

  • A survey of radon concentrations in both indoor and outdoor atmospheres was carried out using EIRM and Cup Monitor for the period of February 1996 to March 1997. EIRM were used to measure the indoor and outdoor radon concentration at five major cities university. Cup Monitor were also used to measure the indoor radon concentrations at shopping store, office building, apartment, hospital and house in Seoul. The mean indoor and outdoor radon concentrations at the five major cities(Seoul, Daegu, Daejon, Cwangiu and Busan) were 24.1 Bq/m$^3$and 8.62 Bq/m$^3$, respectively. The ratio of indoor to outdoor radon concentrations ranged front 1.7 to 3.9. Inspection of its seasonal distribute pattern indicates the enhancement during winter relative to summer, consistently for both indoor and outdoor air. The results of the survey showed that the concentrations in basements were clearly higher than those in usual living/working places.

  • This paper presents the material properties and production of 500 and 700 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ high strength concrete for the practical utilization. A series of Lab. tests were conducted to optimize the material mixture of high strength concrete and then mock-up tests were performed through the Remicon Batch Plant. This paper stresses the material conditions for the final stage of production of 500 and 700 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ high strength concrete, just prior to the practical use on 28-story Samsung Shin-Daebang Housing-Commercial Combined Building with 8-story basements.

  • This paper presents the practical use of high strength concrete on 28-story Samsung Shin-dacbang Housing-Commercial Combined Building with 8-story basements located in Seoul. 700 Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ compressive Strength concrete was placed for basement core-walls and 500 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ concrete was used for structural frames up to 10th floor. The thermal sensors were installed prior to concrete casting into the core walls to measure the heat of hydration during hardening process. The correlation of core strength to the standard cylinder test strength was also discussed. The successful utilization of 500 and 700 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ concrete shows that the practical application of high strength concrete has a great potential to the high-rise R.C building construction.

  • This paper investigates the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete shear wall buildings with multiple underground stories. A base-case where the buildings are modeled with a fixed condition at ground level is adopted, and then the number of basements is incrementally increased to evaluate changes in performance. Two subsurface site conditions, corresponding to very dense sands and medium dense sands, are used for the analysis. In addition, three ground shaking levels are used in the study. Results of the study indicated that while the common design practice of cropping the structure at the ground surface leads to conservative estimation of the base shear for taller and less rigid structures; it results in unpredicted and nonconservative trends for shorter and stiffer structures.

  • The depth of sewers in residential complexes was determined to prevent the separated sewers from misconnection between storm sewer and sanitary sewer, and from the submersion of the basement by minimizing the phenomenon of backwater when it rains. In residential complexes, main causes of the submersion were the misconnection of sewers, rising of the backwater level at outfall in sewer system, poor maintenance of sewers, and lacking in their cross section. Minimum depth of sewers should be over 1.2~1.5m. According to the economic analysis, the depth of 1.5m~3.0m was appropriate for minimizing the submersion of basements and for making the disposal of domestic wastewater more easily.

  • My questionaire survey revealed that even those experts that engage in architectural design did not precisely understand much of the regulations concerning ground-level. In terms of restricting the size of the building area, the generous policy of excluding balconies and basements from the calculation of building size actually causes problems. As far as the right to sunshine is concerned, the weighted average ground-level is determined to be the ground-level standard of the neighboring plot when the neighboring plot is a sloping bare ground. When the difference of heights is over 3 meters, it would be appropriate to assess the weighted ground-level standard every 3 meters.

  • Indoor radon concentrations were measured using Track-Etch detectors in four (Seoul., Songtan, Dogo, Kunsan) different geological areas in Korea during December 1988 - April 1989. Measurements involving 75 hdmes were made in different rooms of each home. The mean concentrations of indoor radon in the homes by area varied from 2.70 - 3.22 pCi/l. Indoor radon concentrations in rural areas were higher than the corresponding levels in urban areas. The mean radon concentrations in the basements were about 1.3 times higher than those levels measured in the first floor. The mean radon concentrations in the kitchen and bedroom were and 2.86 pCi/l 2.43 pCi/l, respectively, while the living room radon concentrations were 2.61 pCi/l. Energy-efficient homes have a living room level that is on the average 1.4 times higher than normally insulated conventional homes. Approximately 13% of the study homes exceeded 4 pCi/l of radon levels of the U.S. EPA's recommended limit. From these results, radon levels in the homes seemed to correlate strongly with house location relative to geologic formation.
