  • Marine magnetic survey were carried out at Sokotra Basin offshore Korea between latitudes $31^{\circ}$ 42'32' N and $32^{\circ}$ 46'29' N, and longitudes $123^{\circ}$ 56'26" E and $125^{\circ}$ 49'16" E in order to estimate the depth of basement complex and as well as to configure it surface and produce the thickness of sedimentary sequence at the study area. Two methods have been used for depth estimation and basement configuration: the power spectrum and the 3-D analytical signal. The estimated depths resulted from the power spectrum method range from 1.4 km to 6.0 km for deep sources (basement troughs), and from 0.3 km to 1.75 km for shallow source (basement peaks). An isopach map was prepared for estimating the thickness of the sedimentary sequence at the study area; it ranges from 1.2 to 4.66 km. The estimated depths resulted from the analytic signal method range from 1.0 to 6 km. A basement configuration map was constructed for the study area in the basin. They show a well agreement with the geology of the study area.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of composition of underground structural wall and H-pile in soil cement. The results of previous experimental studies are re-analyzed and the nonlinear cross-sectional analyses of composite basement walls are performed to verify their nonlinear flexural behavior. Based on the study, it is explained how the gap deformation between H-Pile and RC wall should be considered in the design of flexure of composite underground walls. The nonlinear cross-sectional analysis shows that the load-displacement curves of composite basement wall specimens exhibiting flexural behavior exist between the results of the analysis of the complete and non-composite cases. When predicting the behavior of the composite basement wall by nonlinear cross-sectional analysis, the flexural behavior of the composite basement wall could be suitably predicted by considering the reduction of the composite ratio due to tensile stress acting on shear connectors.

  • Purpose: The heat culture areas of greenhouses have been continuously increasing. In the face of international oil price fluctuations, development of energy saving technologies is becoming essential. To save energy, auxiliary heat source and thermal insulation technologies are being developed, but they lack cost-efficiency. The present study was conducted to save energy by developing a conceptually new semi-basement type greenhouse. Methods: A semi-basement type greenhouse, was designed and constructed in the form of a three quarter greenhouse as a basic structure, which is an advantageous structure to inflow sunlight. To evaluate the performance of the developed greenhouse, a similar structured general greenhouse was installed as a control plot, and heating tests were conducted under the same crop growth conditions. Results: Although shadows appeared during the winter in the semi-basement type greenhouse due to the underground drop, the results of crop growth tests indicated that there were no differences in crop growth and development between the semi-basement type greenhouse and the control greenhouse, indicating that the shadows did not affect the crop up to the height of the crop growing point. The amount of fuel used for heating from January to March was almost the same between the two greenhouses for tests. The heating load coefficients of the experimental greenhouses were calculated as $3.1kcal/m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C{\cdot}h$ for the semi-basement type greenhouse and $2.9kcal/m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C{\cdot}h$ for the control greenhouse. Since the value is lower than the double layer PE (polyethylene) film greenhouse value of $3.5kcal/m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C{\cdot}h$ from a previous study, Tthe semi-basement type greenhouse seemed to have energy saving effects. Conclusions: The semi-basement type greenhouse could be operated with the same fuel consumption as general greenhouses, even though its underground portion resulted in a larger volume, indicating positive effects on energy saving and space utilization. It was identified that the heat losses could be reduced by installing a thermal curtain of multi-layered materials for heat insulation inside the greenhouse for the cultivation of horticultural products by installing thermal curtain of multi-layered materials for heat insulation inside the greenhouse, it was identified that the heat losses could be reduced.

  • A numerical study using linear finite element analysis is performed to investigate the behavior of basement wall subject to soil and water pressure. Currently, structural design of basement wall is based on the assumption for boundary condition of plate, which may lead to the erroneous results. In this study, parametric studies are performed to investigate the variation of moment and shear force according to column-to-wall stiffness ratios and aspect ratios. Scaled factors applicable to the design of basement wall are proposed with the illustration of desist examples.

  • We investigated subsurface structures of the Bransfield Basin, the Antarctic with AUH (Autonomous Underwater Hydrophne) which was designed to record abyssal T-waves generated from submarine earthquakes. The data obtained from a multi-channel seismic survey and an AUH were used for this study. A seismic reflection method was applied to the multi-channel seismic survey data in order to identify bathymetry and sedimentary structures, and the signals recorded in the AUH were used to obtain deep structures as we applied a seismic refraction method. Even though we couldn’t investigate deeper and detailed structure in study area because of lack of Airgun’s capacity, the AUH showed possibilities for being used for a marine seismic survey. From this experiment, we decided the upper and lower sediment layer velocities, detected irregular basement topography probably caused by submarine volcanic/magmatic activities, and retrieved the velocity of the basement and the depth of the sediment layer/basement boundary.

  • The accurate mapping of the basement is one of the most crucial factors in construction of harbour facilities and bridges in the coastal areas. In shallow waters, the seismic reflection method often fails to image the basement geometry beneath the sediment cover in many cases. We present the result of a shallow marine seismic refraction survey using two ships, l2-channel hydrophone arrays deployed on the bottom and a borehole sparker or percussion powder as sources. Velocity structure could be computed by tomography algorithm since more than 6 different source points had been applied for one spread. The comparison of the results of the refraction survey with drilling logs demonstrates remarkable consistency in basement geometry. It thus appears that the refraction method in this study is an efficient and cost-effective way to investigate the basement structure in coastal area, river, and lake.

  • This Study is performed to analyze the behavior of inverted T-shaped Composite Basement Wall(CBW). For this, it is purposed to analyze the failure mechanisms of inverted T-shaped composite basement wall and propose the method of evaluating strength for design. The failure mechanisms would be devided into 4 type mechanisms from previous experimental results, that is hanger failure, punching shear failure, flexural failure and the buckling of H-pile. A strength evaluation procedure for CBW is induced by analyzing respective failure mechanism. Then, the strength for actual structure consisted of inverted T-shaped composite basement wall was evaluated and the expected failure mechanism was determined.

  • Recently, the urban centralization phenomenon appears to be growing. As a result, many vigorous efforts for the use of underground space are being made. In particular, the basement depth of construction in the downtown area has deepened and construction is often done close to adjacent buildings. In this case, generally, the underground construction approach mainly used is the composite basement wall system. However, a cost analysis of the basement composite wall system does not exist. Therefore, in this study, the cost of the composite basement wall system was analyzed. The percentage breakdown of costs were: buttress work processes, 3% form work processes, 26% reinforcement work processes, 12% support work processes, 42% and other processes,17%. Accordingly, it will be necessary when developing new technology and construction methods to determine the development focus.

  • Lead isotopic compositions are analyzed from the sulfide minerals of the Yeonhwa, Janggun and Uljin deposits and from host limestone, intrusives, and basement rocks to reveal the source of Pb in these deposits. In the $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$ vs $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ plot, Galenas from the Yeonhwa mine display relatively well defined positive linear array, similar to the Precambrian basement rocks of the Korean peninsula. A galena sample from the Uljin mine, Janggun limestone and the basement rocks also follow the variation of Yeonhwa mine. However, ore minerals from the Janggun mine, having relatively low $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$ values, reveal offset from such trend toward lower $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ values. Considering the fact that Mesozoic igneous rocks and ores within the Gyeongsang basin display considerably lower $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ values than basement rocks of the Korean peninsula, the deviation of Janggun ore minerals can be interpreted as to reflect mixing between leads from old continental crustal materials and from Mesozoic igneous rocks with more mantle signature. The lead of the Yeonhwa and Uljin mine, following trend of Precambrian basement rather well, seems to have been originated mostly from such basement. However, regarding that they occupy low $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ side of the variation trend of the basement, the possibility of having some leads derived from the Mesozoic igneous rocks cannot be excluded.
