  • Recent aerodynamic and acoustic studies of VPI(velopharyngeal insufficiency) are non-invasive and safety, therefore, many researchers have used it to diagnose the hyper/hyponasality and articulation disorders of cleft palate patients. The purpose of this study was to estimate mainly the oropharyngeal air pressure and over all air flow in cleft lip and palate patients. The pressure-collecting catheter was positioned in the oropharyngel cavity around tongue base. Twelve adult control group and three cleft lip & palate patients were participated to this experimentation. Aerophone II was used to measure peak air flow, mean air flow, phonatory airflow, phonatory efficiency and resistance. The results were as follows: 1) Airflow of cleft lip & palate patients group were higher than those of control group. Fricative sounds /s/ and /s'/ showed the statistic significance of mean airflow and volume data. 2) Intraoral air pressure of cleft lip & palate patients was lower than those of control group.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the branches and distribution of Nervus ophthalmicus of the Korean native goat. The observation was made by dissection of embalmed cadavers of ten Korean native goats. The results were as follows; 1. N. ophthalmicus arised from the trigeminal nerve in a common trunk with the maxillary nerve. 2. At the exit of the foramen orbitorotundum the N. ophthalmicus gave off Ramus zygomaticotemporalis, N. frontalis, Ramus sinuum frontalium and N. nasociliaris. 3. Ramus zygomaticotemporalis, after giving off N. lacrimalis, left the orbital cavity and gave off Rami cornuales which were distributed the caudolateral part of the base of the horn. 4. After giving off N. ciliaris longus and Ramus communicans cum ganglio ciliari, N. nasociliaris divided into N. ethmoidalis and N. infratrochlearis which gave off Rami cornuales.

  • Diagnostics of plasma density is a key factor for monitoring plasma processing. Various probes are invented to measure plasma density and cut-off probe is a one of the most promising diagnostics tool for measuring plasma density. However, at the low density or high pressure the cut-off probe cannot clearly resolve the cut-off peak. Several reasons make this problem: Cut-off likes peaks caused by cavity resonances and weaken transmission spectrum signal at high pressure. Recently, You et al., have researched mechanism of cut-off probe and we improve the cut-off reliability and sensitivity base on that research. Modified cut-off antenna is adapted and bias cut-off probe method is tried. These experiment results have good agreement with the previous study and show good measurement characteristics.

  • Correct occlusal relationships are part of the successful prosthetic treatment for edentulous patients. Fabrication of complete dentures comprises of clinical and laboratory procedures that should be executed accurately for achieving success with fabricated dentures. Errors occurring during the clinical and laboratory procedures of a denture may subsequently lead to the occlusal errors in the final prosthesis. These occlusal errors can be corrected in two ways: i) in patient's mouth ii) by recording new centric relation and remounting dentures on an articulator. The latter method is more feasible because the mobility of denture base on the mucosa in oral cavity does not permit the identification of premature contacts in centric occlusion and tooth guided eccentric excursions. This article describes a modest and effective clinical chair-side remount procedure using customized mounting platforms.

  • A drop impact on the liquid film/pool generates several phenomena such as the drop floating, bouncing, formation of vortex ring, jetting, bubble entrapment and splashing. These phenomena depend on the impact velocity, the drop size, the drop properties and the liquid film/pool thickness. These parameters can be summarized by four main dimensionless parameters; Weber number, Ohnesorge number, Froude number and non-dimensional film/pool thickness. In the present study, the phenomena of the splashing and bubble entrapment due to the drop impact on the liquid film/pool were numerically investigated by using a Level Set method for the sharp interface tracking of two distinct phases. After the drop impact, the splashing phenomena with the crown formation and spreading were predicted. Under the specific conditions, the bubble entrapment at the base of the collapsing cavity due to the drop impact was also observed. The numerical results were compared to the available experimental data showing good agreements.

  • A new slot-coupled back-to-back microstrip array antenna is proposed for using in the IMT-2000 base station or repeater antenna. This antenna is composed of symmetrical SSAIP(Strip Slot, Air Inverted Patch) It has bidirectional radiation pattern in horizontal plane and 22.5$^{\circ}$main beam squint in vertical plane. The analysis is based on the cavity model and the design is achieved using Ensemble. Experimental results for the radiation pattern and the return loss have shown that the direction of the main beam is about 21$^{\circ}$and the impedance bandwidth is approximately 22.9% Thus the proposed antenna is able to operate over both uplink and downlink frequencies in IMT-2000.

  • This paper proposed efficient manufacturing system using the OMM (on-machine measurement) system. The OMM system is software based 3D modeler for inspection on machine and it is interfaced tool machine with RS232C. The software is composed of two inspection modules that one is touch probe operating module and the other is laser displacement sensor operating module. The module for touch probe has need of inspection feature that extracted it from CAD data. Touch probe moves to workpiece by three operating modes as follows: manual, general and automatic mode. The operating module of laser displacement sensor is used inspection for profile and very small hole. An Advantage of this inspection method is to be able to execute on-line inspection during machining or after it. The efficiency of proposed system which can predict and definite the machining errors of each process is verified, so the developed system is applied to inspect the mold-base(cavity, core).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the lateral displacement on the mandibular condylar growth in the rabbit. The experimental animals were twenty White NewZealand rabbits of 4-week old. Ten of them was used as control group, and experimental animal was composed of remaining ten. Laterodeviation appliance was made of cast base metal and appliance was cemented with resin in permanent fashion. Experimental group were sacrificed at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks form beginning of the experiment. Both of temporomandibular joint were prepared for histologic study. The conclusions are: 1. In control group, there was slight increase of proliferative zone and hypertrophic zone at 2-week control animal and slight reduction at 4-week. 6-week and 8-week control animal were similiar to 1-week control animal. 2. In right mandibular condyle of experimental group, 2-week experimental animal showed marked increase of proliferative zone and hypertrophic zone at posterior surface of condylar head. In 8-week experimental animal marked increase at anterior surface of anticular surface is observed. 3. In left mandibular condyle of experimental group, proliferative zone and hypertrophic zone were reduced at 1-week experimental animal and slight increase at 2-week. Proliferative zone and hypertrophic zone were reduced at 4-week experimental animal and were slightly increased at 6 week. 4. After 8 weeks, right and left condyle were not different in experimental group. The condylar cartilage was stabilized 8 weeks after the experiment. No marked traumatic change was seen, but minute focal bleeding was seen at articular cavity in 1-week, 2-week and 4-week experimental animal. 6-week and 8-week experimental animal did not show bleeding tendency in articular cavity.

  • Five cases of traumatic diaphragmatic hernia were repaired in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, during the period from 1967 to 1974. The first case, a 14-year aid girl, was diagnosed as diaphragmatic hernia during laparotomy because of jejunal perforation 3 days after traffic accident. Herniated stomach, transverse colon, spleen and left lobe of the liver were repositioned and the diaphragmatic rupture on left posterolateral portion was repaired with two layers of nonabsorbable sutures by transthoracic approach. The second case, a 26-year old man,was diagnosed immediately after traffic accident at a local clinic and transferred to this hospital 24 hours later. Herniated stomach, transverse colon and jejunum were repositioned amd diaphragmatic rupture, about 9 cm in length, from the posterolat.edge to the base of pericardium was sutured in two layers. The third case, a 26-year old man who had stab wound on the left lower lateral chest two years ago,was admitted with sudden abdominal pain and vomiting. Upper gastrointestinal series with barium meal revealed diaphragmatic hernia. The herniated stomach and transverse colon through the defect, about 3.5cm in diameter, at anterolateral portion on the left side, were repositioned and repaired with two layers of nonabsorbable sutures. The forth case, a 26-year old man, sustained blunt trauma to the chest by a roller and was transferred to the emergency room complaining of dyspnea 40 minutes after the accident. The diaphragmatic rupture extended from left midaxillary line to contralateral anterior axillary line, about 20cm long, at anterior portion of diaphragm, which was repaired with two layers, of nonabsorbable sutures. The fifth case, a 4-year old girl, had two separate diaphragmatic ruptures on both sides, which were caused by traffic accident. Immediate upper gastrointestinal series after injury showed herniated stomach, colon and spleen into left Chest cavity. Another small rupture with anterior edge of right lobe of the liver in chest cavity was noted. These were repaired with non-absorbable sutures via thoracotomy.
