This study was performed to observe the secondary images and to analyse the relationships between the primary and secondary images in panoramic radiograph. Using the Moritta's Panex-EC panoramic x-ray machine and the human dry skull, the author analysed 17 radiographs which were selected from 65 radiographs of the dry skull that attached the radiopaque materials, and the attached regions of the radiopaque materials were the normal anatomical structures which were important and selected as a regions for the evaluation of the secondary images effectively. The results were as follows; 1. The cervical vertebrae showed three images. The midline image was the most distorted and less clear, and bilateral images were slightly superimposed over the posterior border of the mandibular ramus. 2. In mandible, the secondary image of the posterior border of the ramus was superimposed on the opposite ramus region, and this image was elongated from the anterior border of the ramus to the lateral side of the posterior border of the ramus. The secondary image of the condyle was observed on the upper area of the coronoid process, the sigmoid notch and the condyle in opposite side. 3. In maxilla, the posterior region of the hard palate showed the secondary image on the lower part of the nasal cavity and the medial wall of the maxillary sinus. 4. The primary images of the occipital condyle and the mastoid process appeared on the same region, and only the secondary image of the occipital condyle was observed symmetrically on the opposite side with similar shape to the primary one. 5. In the cranial base, the anatomical structures of the midsagittal portions like a inferior border of the frontal sinus, sella turcica, inferior borderr of the sphenoid sinus and inferior border of the posterior part of the occipital bone showed the simillar shape between the primary and secondary images symmetrically. 6. The petrous portion of the temporal bone showed the secondary image on the lateral side of the sella-turcica, and the secondary images of the posterior border of lesser wing, superior border of greater wing of the sphenoid bone and posterior border were observed on the anterior-superior and inferior region of the sella-turcica.

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of radiopacity of glass ionomer cements and to determine the optimum level of radiopacity that is the most compatible with the radiographic diagnosis of secondary caries. The experiments were performed in two parts. In the first part, the radiopacities of 9 glass ionomer cements (FI, FII, FI-LC, FII-LC, SI, SII, Vit, B-VLC, AC) and base materials(Ultra-Blend, Zinc phoaphate cements, Cavitec, Dycal) were measured by densitometer. Then all experimental materials were divided into 5 groups based on the level of radiopacity of enamel and dentin. In the second part, class III cavities with or without secondary caries were prepared in extracted anterior teeth. The representative materials of each group with different radiopacities were inserted into each cavity. The radiographs were interpreted by 15 dentists and seconsary caries were diagnosed according to a five-point confidence rating. Sensitivity and ROC analysis were used to compare observer performance. The following results were obtained : 1. The radipacity of glass ionomer cements varied between 1.111mm Al and 6.011mm Al equivalent. 2. Among experimental materials, three materials in group I had lower radiopacity than that of dentin. The radiopacity of two materials in group II slightly exeeded that of dentin. Three materials in group III had slightly lower radiopacity than that on enamel. The radiopacity of one material in group W was slightly higher than that of enamel. Four materals in group V had the radiopacity that exeeded over 2.0mm AI equivalent to that of enamel. 3. The group IV was the highest for sensitivity and the group V was the highest for ROC area. However, no significant differences were obtained among group II, III, IV and V (P<0.05) but only group I was significantly lower(P<0.01). 4. In comparison with the observer performance for the radiographic diagnosis of secondary caries, the group II, III, IV, and V were superior to the group I (P<0.01). And so the optimum level of radiopacity to detect the secondary caries was the radiopacity that is higher than that of dentin.
Purpose: Ganglioneuromas are well-differentiated tumors derived from neuroectodermal neural crest cells. Although these tumors can occur anywhere along the sympathetic chain from the base of the skull to the pelvic cavity, they usually develop in the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum these tumors are rarely found in the cervical region. Method: We report the case of a 16-year-old male patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 who was admitted because of a palpable mass centrally located on the left side of the neck. A preoperative contrast-enhanced neck computed tomography image showed a low-density homogeneous mass on the parapharyngeal space along with marked displacement of the trachea and carotid vessels. Round and soft masses were also detected on both axillae. Results: The patient subsequently underwent complete excision of the neck mass via the transcervical approach. The mass was smooth and well encapsulated between the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the trachea. Further, the mass appeared to arise from the cervical sympathetic chain, which was preserved during surgery. Both the axillary masses were also excised. The histopathological findings were ganglioneuroma for the neck mass and neurofibroma for both the axillary masses. Conclusion: Cervical ganglioneuromas are rare tumors that present as enlarging parapharyngeal cervical masses in the oropharynx or neck. To our knowledge, a case of cervical ganglioneuroma associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 has never been reported. In patients with neurofibromatosis, multiple tumors may develop, and therefore periodic clinical and radiological follow-up is recommended. Further, repeated imaging analysis should be performed if the presence of another tumor is suspected.
PURPOSES : Nowadays, cavity phenomena occur increasingly in pavement layers of downtown areas. This leads to an increment in the number of potholes, sinkholes, and other failure on the road. A loss of earth and sand from the pavement plays a key role in the occurrence of cavities, and, hence, a structural-performance evaluation of the pavement is essential. METHODS: The structural performance was evaluated via finite-element analysis using KPRP and KICTPAVE. KPRP was developed in order to formulate a Korean pavement design guide, which is based on a mechanical-empirical pavement design guide (M-EPDG). RESULTS: Installation of the anti-freezing layer yielded a fatigue crack, permanent deformation, and international roughness index (IRI) of 13%, 0.7 cm, and 3.0 m/km, respectively, as determined from the performance analysis conducted via KPRP. These values satisfy the design standards (fatigue crack: 20%, permanent deformation: 1.3 cm, IRI: 3.5 m/km). The results of FEM, using KICTPAVE, are shown in Figures 8~12 and Tables 3~5. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the performance analysis (conducted via KPRP) satisfy the design standards, even if the thickness of the anti-freezing layer is not considered. The corresponding values (i.e., 13%, 0.7 cm, and 3.0 m/km) are obtained for all conditions under which this layer is applied. Furthermore, the stress and strain on the interlayer between the sub-grade and the anti-freezing layer decrease gradually with increasing thickness of the anti-freezing layer. In contrast, the strain on the interlayer between the sub-base and the anti-freezing layer increases gradually with this increase in thickness.
This study describes the first record of Globocephalus samoensis (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae) recovered in wild boars from southwestern regions of Korea. Gastrointestinal tracts of 111 Korean wild boars (Sus scrofa coreanus) hunted from mountains in Suncheon-si, Gwangyang-si, and Boseong-gun between 2009 and 2012 were examined for their visceral helminths. G. samoensis, as identified by morphological characteristics of the head and tail, were recovered from the small intestine of 51 (45.9%) wild boars. Worms were found from 7 of 28 wild boars (25.0%) from Suncheon-si, 40 of 79 (50.6%) from Gwangyang-si, and all 4 (100%) from Boseong-gun. The length of adult females was $7.2{\pm}0.5mm$, and the thickest part of the body measured the average $0.47{\pm}0.03mm$, while those of males were $6.52{\pm}0.19$ and $0.37{\pm}0.02mm$, respectively. The buccal cavity was equipped with a pair of large and bicuspid subventral lancets near the base of the capsule. The average length of spicules of males was $0.45{\pm}0.02mm$. By the present study, G. samoensis is recorded for the first time in southwestern regions of Korea. Additionally, morphological characteristics and identification keys provided in the present study will be helpful in the faunistic and taxonomic studies for strongylid nematodes in both domestic and wild pigs. The infection of G. samoensis apparently did not elicit pathologic lesions, as revealed by macroscopic observation during the autopsy of all wild boars in this study.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the experimental and commercial fluoride varnishes on the Vickers hardness of bovine teeth. The experimental fluoride varnishes with 5 wt.% NaF were fabricated using Bis-GMA or rosin as the resin base. The components were mixed with over-head stirrer under warming up in a double boiler for 30 minutes. Four commercial fluoride varnishes (V-varnish, Flor-opal, Cavity shield, Fluor protector) were compared with the experimental fluoride varnishes. Vickers hardness was measured on the labial surface of bovine anterior teeth after applying fluoride varnish on 5th and 30th day. The surface of bovine teeth was observed with a scanning electron microscope before and after applying fluoride varnish and the change of the components on the bovine teeth surface was measured with EDX. In terms of hardness, the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish showed significantly higher hardness on the 5th and 30th day than the control (bovine teeth without fluoride treatment)(p<0.05). EDX results showed that the fluoride content on the surface of bovine teeth treated with the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish was highest on the 1st and 10th day. The higher hardness and fluoride content of experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish can be considered to be used as an effective fluoride varnish to prevent dental caries.
Ameloblastomaa are odontogenic benign tumors with epithelial origin, which are characterized by slow, aggressive, and invasive growth. Most ameloblastomas occur in the mandible, and their prevalence in the maxilla is low. A 27-year-old male visited our clinic with a chief complaint of the left side nasal airway obstruction. Three-dimensional computed tomography showed left maxillary sinus filled with a mass. Except for the perforated maxillary left edentulous area, no invaded or destructed bone was noted. The tumor was excised via Le Fort I osteotomy. The main mass was then sent for biopsy and it revealed acanthomatous ameloblastoma. The lesion in the left maxillary sinus reached the ethmoidal sinus through the nasal cavity but did not invade the orbit and skull base. The tumor was accessed through a Le Fort I downfracture in consideration of the growth pattern and range of invasion. The operation site healed without aesthetic appearances and functional impairments. However, further long-term clinical observation is necessary in the future for the recurrence of ameloblastoma. Conservative surgical treatment could be the first choice considering fast recovery after surgery and the patient's life quality.
Two-port laparoscopic ovariectomy (Lap-OVE) has been performed in small dogs, using 3-mm and 5-mm portal sites, and is associated with reduced surgical stress and postoperative pain. However, extension of the incision is often needed to extract the ovaries. In this study, we aimed to minimize invasiveness by using smaller-sized cannulas as well as a novel technique for ovary extraction. Lap-OVE was performed on six, healthy female dogs (range, 3 to 7.2 kg) using two 3-mm midline portals. The middle finger of a size M nitrile glove was cut at its base and sterilized preoperatively. The ovary was suspended at the body wall using a 1-0 blue nylon needle, and the ovarian pedicle and ligaments were transected using a 3-mm bipolar forceps. To facilitate the glove passing through the 3.9-mm port, it was turned inside out to expose the smooth inner surface, before being inserted into the abdominal cavity with an applicator. Both ovaries were placed inside, and the mouth of the glove was exteriorized through the port with a laparoscopic grasping forceps. The ovaries were morcellated inside the glove, using Adison-Brown tissue forceps and iris scissors, which enabled safe extraction without incision enlargement. Median incision lengths were 4.3 mm (3.5-mm cranial cannula) and 4.8 mm (3.9-mm caudal cannula). An advantage of this procedure was that there was no need for skin sutures. In conclusion, using our novel technique, sutureless Lap-OVE was possible in small dogs using two 3-mm portal sites without additional incision.
