We report petrologic characteristics including $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ absolute ages of the subsurface lavas recovered from borehole cores in two islets, Marado and Gapado, off the southwestern coast of Jeju in southernmost Korea and discuss on the volcanism in the region. The lavas in Gapado are apparently divided into one unit with bright colored, aphanitic texture and sheet jointed, and another unit with dark colored and massive. The outcrops often show differentially weathered pattern due to textural difference. While, the lavas in Marado have vesicular and glomerporphyric texture, even though each lava flow unit in Marado has slight unique texture with variation of vesicularity and phenocrysts. The chemical composition of rock core samples from Gapa borehole and Mara borehole shows that the lavas from Gapado and Marado are classified into basaltic trachyandesite($SiO_2$ 52.6-53.6 wt%, $Na_2O+K_2O$ 7.3-7.5 wt%) and tholeiitic andesite($SiO_2$ 51.7-52.8 wt%, $Na_2O+K_2O$ 3.6-4.1 wt%), respectively. The measured $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ plateau ages range from $824{\pm}32\;Ka$(MSL -69 m) to $758{\pm}\;Ka$(MSL 19 m) for core samples of Gapa borehole and $259{\pm}168\;Ka$(MSL -26 m) for a core sample of Mara borehole, respectively. The absolute age of Gapado basaltic trachyandesite is well correlated with that of Sanbangsan trachyte(Won et al., 1986). Meanwhile, the age of a sample in Marado has $259{\pm}168\;Ka$(MSL -26 m) with poor plateau age formation and high error range. We report the data in caution but the rock composition and absolute age of Marado tholeiitic andesite are relatively correlated with those of lava units from Duksu and Sangmo-2 boreholes, indicating the volcanism during 260-150 Ka. On the basis of interpretation of occurrences of exposed and subsurface volcanic rocks of the study area, stratigraphic relationship with adjacent borehole cores and the bathymetry chart of surrounding area, it indicates that the lavas in Gapado were formed around 800 Ka during relatively early stage of volcanic activity in Jeju Island. Meanwhile, Marado may have originated around 260-150 Ka during relatively young stage of volcanism in Jeju Island. It is inferred that the volcanisms have originated in land and these islets were individual ancient volcanoes. The apparent topography has been re-shaped by tidal erosion due to transgression.
Erroneous fission-track (FT) ages caused by an inappropriate calibration in the initial stage of FT dating were redefined by re-experiments and zeta calibration using duplicate samples. Revised FT zircon ages newly define the formation ages of Yucheon Group rhyolitic-dacitic tuffs as Late Cretaceous to Early Paleocene ($78{\pm}4$ Ma to $65{\pm}2$ Ma) and Gokgangdong rhyolitic tuff as Early Eocene ($52.1{\pm}2.3$ Ma). In case of the Early Miocene volcanics, FT zircon ages from a dacitic tuff of the upper Hyodongri Volcanics ($21.6{\pm}1.4$ Ma) and a dacitic lava of the uppermost Beomgokri Volcanics ($21.3{\pm}2.0$ Ma) define chronostratigraphies of the upper Beomgokri Group, respectively in the southern Eoil Basin and in the Waeup Basin. A FT zircon age ($19.8{\pm}1.6$ Ma) from the Geumori dacitic tuff defines the time of later dacitic eruption in the Janggi Basin. Based on FT zircon ages for dacitic rocks and previous age data (mostly K-Ar whole-rock, partly Ar-Ar) for basaltic-andesitic rocks, reference ages are recommended as guides for stratigraphic correlations of the Miocene volcanics and basements in SE Korea. The times of accumulation of basin-fill sediments are also deduced from ages of related volcanics. Recommended reference ages are well matched to the whole stratigraphic sequences despite complicated basin structures and a relative short time-span. The Beomgokri Group evidently predates the Janggi Group in the Eoil-Waeup basins, while it is placed at an overlapped time-level along with the earlier Janggi Group in the Janggi Basin. Therefore, the two groups cannot be uniformly defined in a sequential order. The Janggi Group of the Janggi Basin can be evidently subdivided by ca. 20 Ma-basis into two parts, i.e., the earlier (23-20 Ma) andesitic-dacitic and later (20-18 Ma) basaltic strata.
We determined $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ ages of the Tertiary dike swarms and volcanic rocks distributed in the SE Korea where the most prevalent crustal-deformation and volcanism occurred during the period. In previous study, it was disclosed that the mafic dike swarms on both sides (east and west) of the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YTL) were originated from a same magma although they are consistently aligned with different intrusion directions of NS and NE, respectively. Ages of the mafic dike swarms of this study are $47.3\pm0.8Ma$ and $48.0\pm1.3Ma$, respectively and confirm such conclusion. These facts clarify that the YTL acted as a westernmost limit of the crustal deformation, especially clockwise crust-rotation, during the Miocene. Frequent occurrence of basic dikes indicate strongly that the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula was under E-W extensional stress field at about 48 Ma, intimately related to the India-Asia collision and subsequent sudden change of the Pacific Plate motion. The ages of the uncommonly appearing intermediate and felsic dikes were determined as $55.9\pm1.5Ma$ and $53.0\pm1.0Ma$, respectively. Ages of the andesitic lava of the Hyodongri Volcanics, the dacitic lava of the Yongdongri Tuff, and dacitic rocks intruding and covering the Churyeong Breccia were determined as $24.0\pm0.5Ma,\;21.6\pm0.4Ma$, $21.8\pm0.1Ma,\;and\;22.0\pm0.5Ma$ respectively. The ages from the volcanics agrees well with the stratigraphy established by the latest field survey, which confirms that the $andesitic\~dacitic$ volcanism was followed by the basaltic volcanism during the Early Miocene.
Ulleung Island is the top of an intraplate alkalic volcano rising 3200 m from sea floor in the East Sea (or Sea of Japan). The emergent 984.6 m consist of eruptive products of basaltic, trachytic and phonolitic magmas, which are divided into Dodong Basaltic Rocks, and Ulleung, Seonginbong and Nari groups. The Maljandeung Tuff in the Nari Group consists of thick pyroclastic sequences which are subdivided into 4 members (N-5, U-4, 3, 2), generating from explosive eruptions during past 18.8~5.6 ka B.P. From chemical data, the Member N-5, phonolitic in composition, is considerably enriched in incompatible elements and REE patterns with significant negative Eu anomalies. The members 4, 3 and 2 are phonolitic to tephriphonolitic in composition, and their REE patterns do not have significant Eu anomalies. In variation trend diagrams, many elements show abrupt compositional gaps between members, and gradual upward-mafic variations from phonolite to tephriphonolite within each member. It suggests a downward-mafic zonation that were evolved into phonolitic zone in the lower part to tephriphonolitic zone in upper part of magma chamber. It is supposed that the chemical stratification generated from multiple mechanisms of thermal gravidiffusion, crystal fractionation, and gradual melting and sequential emplacement. The stratified magmas were explosively erupted to generate a small caldera during short period (11 ka B.P.). Especially both members (U-3, 2) were accumulated by gradually erupting from the upper phonoltic zone to the lower tephriphonoltic zone of the stratified chamber in 8.4 ka B.P. and 5.6 ka B.P. time, respectively.
The solubility of aluminum for two Andisol profiles formed on pyroclastic materials and basaltic rocks from Jeju Island, Korea was investigated. It is found that high organic carbon content and $Al_{pyrophosphate}/Al_{oxalate}$ ratios in the A horizons, suggesting the substantial amounts of reactive Al are associated with organic matter, whereas the low organic carbon content and the $Al_{pyrophosphate}/Al_{oxalate}$ ratios in the Bo horizons indicate that a major part of the reactive Al should be bound inorganically. The differential FT-IR spectra following acid-oxalate dissolution and heating up to 150 and $350^{\circ}C$, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation confirm that imogolite is in the Bo horizon. Our results of equilibration experiments demonstrate that the Al solubility in the Bo horizon for Andisols can be clarified by the congruent dissolution model for imogolite-type material (ITM), rather than by the simultaneous equilibrium with both ITM and Al hydroxy-interlayered aluminosilicate. With results from dialysis and aging procedures, it is noted that the formation of a proto imogolite sol showing its transformation to imogolite, which supports the congruent dissolution of ITM primarily controlling the Al solubility of Andisols in Jeju Island, Korea.
The "Noerog", a traditional green mineral pigment occurs as veins or cavity-filings in the basaltic pyroclastic rocks of Quaternary Epoch in Mt. Noeseong in Janggi-myeon, Pohang. The "Noerog stone" mainly consists of celadonite with minor chlorite/smectite, mordenite and opal. Celadonite grains are several hundreds to several tens of ${\mu}m$ in size. The particle sizes under several tens of fm are likely to coagulate to aggregates. The coloring rate increases rapidly with decreasing particle size under $71{\mu}m$. The hiding power is maximum in the particle sizes of $0.2\sim0.3{\mu}m$. The resistance properties of the Noerog to both the light and the bacteria are absolutely superior to ordinary chemical pigments. The transparency of the Noerog is maximum in the nano-powders under 200 nm. Examination of the color of the Noerog pigment which has been prepared by traditional technique for "dancheong" shows that the best coloring effect is found in the particle sizes under $32{\mu}m$ and that the painting was not successful for the Noerog of particle size over $32{\mu}m$.
Water sources in volcanic Jeju Island are almost entirely dependent on groundwater because there are actually no perennial streams or rivers due to the permeable nature of surface soils derived from basaltic or trachytic rocks. Uncontrolled development of groundwater resulted in substantial water-level decline, groundwater pollution, and seawater intrusion in several places of the island. To maintain its sustainable groundwater, the provincial government has declared some parts of the island as the Special Groundwater Conservation/Management Area since 1994. Hence, all the activities for the groundwater development in the area should obtain official permit from relevant authorities. Furthermore, to acquire information on groundwater status, a network of groundwater monitoring was established to cover most of the low land and coastal areas with the installation of automatic monitoring systems since 2001. The analysis of the groundwater monitoring data indicated that the water levels had decreased at coastal area, especially in northern part of the island. Moreover, very high electrical conductivity (EC) levels and their increasing trends were observed in the eastern part, which was ascribable to seawater intrusion by intensive pumping in recent years. Water level decline and EC rise in the coastal area are expected to continue despite the present strict control on additional groundwater development.

The Hydrogeologic data of 455 water wells comprising geologic log and aquifer test were analyzed to determine hydrogeologic characteristics of the Cheju island. The groundwater. of the Cheju island is occurred in unconsolidated pyroclastic deposits and crinker interbedded in highly jointed basaltic and andesic rocks as high level, basal and parabasal types under unconfined condition. The average transmissivity and specific yield of the aquifer are at about 29,300㎡/day and 0.12 respectively, The total storage of groundwater is estimated about 44 billion cubic meters. Average annual precipitation is about 3,390 million ㎥ among which average recharge is estimated for 1,494 million ㎥ being equivalent 44.1% of total annual precipitation with 638 million ㎥ of runoff and 1,256 million ㎥ of evapotranspiration. Based on groundwater budget analysis, the sustainable yield is about 620 million ㎥(41% of annual recharge)and rest is discharging into the sea. The geologic logs of recently drilled thermal water wells indicate that very low-permeable marine sediments(Sehwa-ri formation) composed of loosely cemented sandy silt derived from mainly volcanic ashes at the 1st stage volcanic activity of the area is situated at the 120${\pm}$68m below sea level. Another low-permeable sedimentary rock called Seogipo-formation which is deemed younger than the former marine sediment is occured at the area covering north-west and western part of the Cheju island at the ${\pm}$70m below sea level. If these impermeable beds art distributed as a basal formation of fresh water zone of the Cheju island, the most of groundwater in the Cheju island will be para-basal type. These formations will be one of the most important hydrogeologic boundary and groundwater occurences in the area.
Phlogopite and kaersutite, showing distinctively different textural characteristics compared to the common phenocrysts, are observed in alkali basalt from Jeju Island. They occur as large crystals (2-10 mm) in host basalts, whereas fine-grained phlogopite and kaersutite occur in ultramafic mantle xenoliths and mafic gabbroic xenoliths, respectively, as an interstitial and microvein phases, or in corona textures (<1 mm). This textural characteristics of fine-grained grains clearly indicates secondary in origin. Phlogopite contains high $TiO_2$(4.1-6.9 wt%) and F(2.8-4.6 wt%) and relatively high mg#[=100Mg/(Mg+$Fe^t$) in mols, where $Fe^t$ is total iron](88-80), whereas kaersutite has high $TiO_2$(5.6-6.11 wt%) and much lower mg#s(68-64). Our textural observations and the geochemical character of these hydrous minerals suggest that they were unrelated to each other and mica formation happened early in the upper mantle before the mantle xenoliths had been trapped. In contrast, kaersutite formation has happened later, probably during the late stage of crystallization as intracrustal processes. The presence of phlogopite and kaersutitic amphibole is a direct evidence for K-, Ti-, F- and $H_2O$-bearing fluid/melt percolation in the lithosphere beneath Jeju Island, indicating that they are product of interaction between host rock/peridotite/fluid-melt. Thus, the upper mantle/lower crust beneath Jeju Island are metasomatized to various extents, characterized by a change in major metasomatic hydrous minerals from phlogopite to amphibole with decreasing depth.
CFC(CFC-12, CFC-11 and CFC-113) analytical system for air and water was constructed using a customized purge and trap extraction device and a gas chromatograph with an electron capture detector. Sampling methods of air and water for CFCs were also established. The analytical system was experimentally optimized to result in reproducibilities of triplicates less than 2% for current air samples and less than 5% for groundwater samples with CFC-12 concentration of 160 to 180 pg/kg, and verified with respect to the CFC system in USGS, which showed analytical results were in agreement within 10%. CFCs in air were monitored at three sites over 19-month period in the central part of South Korea, and the result indicates no significant local sources of CFCs in those areas. For groundwater in Jeju Island, CFCs were measured over a year with a two-month interval. The time-series data showed seasonal fluctuations which could be interpreted by the effect of recharge pulse derived from large amount of rainfall during monsoon period with a few month delay, which indicates high permeability of basaltic rocks in Jeju Island.
