  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) comprising several lesions is not uncommon, but nonsyndromic multiple BCCs with parotid invasion are rare entities. We present two cases of multiple sporadic, nonsyndromic BCCs, and one of these cases is a unique case of parotid invasion associated purely with actinic keratosis. In Case 1, a 79-year-old female presented with multiple skin lesions on the face and left hand. All lesions were completely removed by surgery. The pathologic results showed lesions consistent with BCC and some lesions consistent with actinic keratosis. After 8 months, the patient presented with skin lesions in bilateral temporal areas and left cheek area. Surgical excision of the lesions was performed, and the biopsy results were squamous cell carcinoma in situ and actinic keratosis. In Case 2, a 43-year-old woman presented with multiple skin lesions on the face, scalp, right chest, abdomen and right leg. All lesions were completely removed by surgery. Pathologic evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of BCC. BCC is rarely metastatic, but it can lead to severe disfiguration or destruction. It is important to diagnose and treat BCC at an early stage.

  • Apical to basal transport of organic cations (OCs) such as tributylmethylammonium (TBuMA), triethyimethylammonium (TEMA). 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP), and berberine across Caco-2 cell monolayers was measured to elucidate the intestinal absorption of OCs. Basal to apical transport of MPP and berberine was larger than apical to basal transport and showed temperature dependency and concentration dependency. indicating that MPP and berberine are secreted into the inteslinal lumen. • Glioblastoma is the most aggressive common brain tumor in adults. Curcumin, from Curcuma longa, is an effective antitumor agent. Although the same proteins control both autophagy and cell death, the molecular connections between them are complicated and autophagy may promote or inhibit cell death. We investigated whether curcumin affects autophagy, which regulates curcumin-mediated tumor cell death in A172 human glioblastoma cells. When A172 cells were incubated with $10{\mu}M$ curcumin, autophagy increased in a time-dependent manner. Curcumin-induced cell death was reduced by co-incubation with the autophagy inhibitors 3-methyladenine (3-MA), hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), and LY294002. Curcumin-induced cell death was also inhibited by co-incubation with rapamycin, an autophagy inducer. When cells were incubated under serum-deprived medium, LC3-II amount was increased but the basal level of cell viability was reduced, leading to the inhibition of curcumin-induced cell death. Cell death was decreased by inhibiting curcumin-induced autophagy using small interference RNA (siRNA) of Atg5 or Beclin1. Therefore, curcumin-mediated tumor cell death is promoted by curcumin-induced autophagy, but not by an increase in the basal level of autophagy in rapamycin-treated or serum-deprived conditions. This suggests that the antitumor effects of curcumin are influenced differently by curcumin-induced autophagy and the prerequisite basal level of autophagy in cancer cells.

  • Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), also known as Gorlin syndrome, is characterized by various embryological deformities and carcinoma formation. It is caused by PTCHI gene mutations and is autosomal dominantly inherited. Some of the main symptoms of NBCCS are multiple basal cell carcinomas, multiple keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) of the mandible, hyperkeratosis of the palmar and plantar, skeletal deformity, calcification of the falx cerebri, and facial defomity. Recurrent KCOT is the main symptom of NBCCS and is present in approximately 90% of patients. In NBCCS, KCOTs typically occur in multiples. KCOTs can be detected in patients under the age of 10, and new and recurring cysts develop until approximately the age of 30. The postoperation recurrence rate is approximately 60%. This case report presents a 14-year-old female patient with a chief complaint of a cyst found in the maxilla and mandible. The patient was diagnosed with NBCCS, and following treatment of marsupialization and enucleation, the clinical results were satisfactory.

  • Membranous glomerulonephritis can manifest as a paraneoplastic syndrome. The presence of evidence that supports the relationship between malignancy and membranous glomerulonephritis remains unresolved, though. Membranous glomerulonephritis has been commonly reported as associated with solid or hematologic malignancy, such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, and gastro-intestinal cancer, but its concomitant existence with skin cancer is rare. This paper reports a case of membranous glomerulonephritis combined with basal cell carcinoma that was successfully treated with the excision of the basal skin cell carcinoma.

  • Cryptomonas curvata Ehrenberg is a photosynthetic freshwater flagellate and the type species of the genus Cryptomonas. We examined the flagellar apparatus of cryptomorphic C. curvata by transmission electron microscopy. The major components of the flagellar apparatus are the non-keeled rhizostyle (Rhs), striated fibrous root (SR), striated fiber-associated microtubular root (SRm), mitochondrion-associated lamella (ML), and two types of microtubular roots (3r and 2r). The non-keeled Rhs originate at the ventral basal body and consist of two types of microtubule bands extending together into the middle of the cell. The SR and SRm extend parallel to the left side of the cell. The ML originates from the ventral basal body and is a plate-like fibrous structure associated with mitochondria. The 3r extends from the dorsal basal body toward the dorsal anterior of the cell. The 2r originates between the two basal bodies and extends shortly to the left of the cell. The overall configuration of the flagellar apparatus is most similar to that previously reported for C. pyrenoidifera. These results demonstrate that the features of the flagellar apparatus are useful for distinguishing closely related species and inferring phylogenetic relationships among taxa.

  • Basal cell nevus syndrome, also known as Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, is a hereditary condition transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait that exhibits high penetrance and variable expressivity. It is an ecto-mesodermal polydysplasia with numerous manifestations that affect multiple organs. Odontogenic keratocysts, palmar and plantar pits, and hypertelorism are the most frequently observed anomalies. Currently there are new lines of investigation based on biomolecular studies, which aim at identifying the molecules responsible for these cysts and thus early allowing an early diagnosis of these patients. We report two cases of multiple odontogenic keratocysts associated with basal cell nevus syndrome.

  • A 10 year-old castrated male Maltese dog with a mass on the right carpal joint was referred to the Chungnam National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Mass size was 0.5 cm in width, 0.8 cm in length and 0.8 cm in height. Surface of the mass was hairless and ulcerated, and also the peripheral furs of mass were discolored by continuous licking. This case was diagnosed as basal cell tumor by fine needle aspiration and histopathologic examination. This dog didn't lick the carpal joint after surgery.
