  • Curtainwall systems has been applied to buildings widely for constructability. However, as cutainwall system include many building materials, they become to damaged vapor barrier and incur condensation. Natural ventilation of an air cavity in a curtainwall is expected to be an prevention of condensation in inner wall and reduce cooling energy in summer. The objective of this experimental study is to evaluating the insulation and condensation Performance of ventilated curtainwall with ventilated cavity depth and ratio of opening area.

  • The effectiveness of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools and processes has been recognized by the industry and owners are beginning to adopt Triple Bottom Line accounting practices, to enhance economic performance and environmental and social performance. However, the widespread and practical application of Green BIM remains largely unrealized. The authors identify that lack of understanding of the applicability of sustainability metrics to BIM design process is a significant barrier to this adoption. Through literature review this paper outlines the various sustainability metrics available to construction and elaborates on the potential of BIM for sustainable design. The paper maps and correlates applicable concepts of sustainability evaluation systems to BIM and describes the constraints in current BIM tools.

Hot Fire Tests of the KSR-III Sub.(I) Engines (KSR-III 축소형(I) 엔진의 연소 시험)

  • In the preceding tests using the KSR-III Sub.(I) engines, it was observed that the heat resistant capability of the engines was not enough for the mission. So Sub.(I) Mod. engines were designed and tested. The Sub.(I) Mod. engines have three major design parameters - the arrangement of main injectors, the impinging angle of main injectors and thermal barrier coating. More than twenty experiments were carried on to evaluate engine performance and heat resistance capability with respect to design parameters. In this study, the test results are introduced. Analysing the result of Sub.(I) engine tests, it is found that decreasing the impinging angle, adopting the H-type arrangement(rather than radial type arrangement) and adopting the thermal barrier coating can increase heat resistance capacity substantially. Also, engine performance evaluation is conducted using specific impulse and characteristic velocity parameter. The results show that the performance variation is small(about 5%) and the performance is better in the case of radial arrangement. It is suspected that these phenomena are caused by the change of flame structure atomization mixing characteristic of sprays and the distortion of recirculation zone. Also from the low frequency instability point of view, it is observed that reducing the impinging angle and adopting the H type arrangement can increase the instability characteristics.

Removal of Nitrate in Column Reactors Using Surfactant Modified Zeolite (SMZ를 이용한 컬럼반응조 내 질산성 질소의 제거)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of nitrate removal by conducting the column test in order to see the performance of surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) as a permeable reactive barrier material. The prediction of nitrate removal was tested using the one-dimensional advective-dispersive model fitted to the experimental breakthrough curve. A methodology for scaling up to in-situ permeable reactive barrier was also proposed. The breakthrough of nitrate in the column packed with SMZ was well predicted using linear equilibrium adsorption model. The breakthrough time and half-life obtained by breakthrough experiment with variation of flowrates were decreased with the increase of flowrates. When 10㎥/day of groundwater containing the 50 mg/l of nitrate is to be treated to satisfy the potable water quality criteria (10 mg/l) by SMZ reactive barrier, 300 tons of SMZ and about 6 years of breakthrough time will be required, suggesting that 165 million wons are needed as barrier material expenses in each 6 years besides the initial design and construction expenses and the minimal monitoring and maintenance expenses.

A Comparison of Concrete Median Barriers in terms of Safety Performance using Computer Simulation (컴퓨터 모의층돌시험을 통한 콘크리트 중앙분리대 방호울타리 형식별 성능비교 연구)

  • The concrete median barriers are the most popular safety appurtenance that can be installed on narrow medians and are effective in keeping uncontrolled vehicles from crossing into opposing lanes of traffic. It is necessary to install and maintain median barriers because it is very difficult to reserve enough room required for medians in KOREA. Also, concrete median barriers are accepted as the actual alternatives for median barriers, mostly because they require almost no maintenance even after serious collisions. Typical concrete median barriers are 810mm high and have 596mm high glare screens on top of them. However we have experienced a number of "climb" and "roll-over" accidents of heavy vehicles and most of all, there have been some serious accidents caused by the part of broken glare screens. So the improvement study of concrete median barriers started. Prior to this study, a new type of concrete median barrier was suggested which is 1,270mm high and has no glare screens on top of it. So it was required to compare the properties of various types of concrete median barriers including the new type to find the optimal type of concrete median barrier. In this study, we have evaluated the characteristics of four types of concrete median barriers (New Jersey type, F type, constant slope type, and wall type). We have performed many computer simulations for the evaluation of the crashworthiness of them, and through the simulations we have tried to find a proper type of concrete median barrier. Through the computer simulations, we evaluated the structural stability and safety of the four types of concrete median barriers. We confirmed the structural stability and safety of them But in regard to the probability of "roll-over" of heavy vehicles, the higher concrete median barriers showed better performances than the lower. As the result of this study a new type of concrete median barrier was recommended.

Nonlinear Impact Analysis for Eco-Pillar Debris Barrier with Hollow Cross-Section (중공트랙단면 에코필라 사방댐의 비선형 충돌해석)

  • In this study, a nonlinear impact analysis was performed to evaluate the safety and damage of an eco-pillar debris barrier with a hollow cross-section, which was proposed to improve constructability and economic efficiency. The construction of concrete eco-pillar debris barriers has increased recently. However, there are no design standards concerning debris barriers in Korea, and it is difficult to find a study on performance evaluations in extreme environments. Thus, an analysis of an eco-pillar debris barrier was done using the rock impact speed, which was estimated from the debris flow velocity. The diameters of rocks were determined by ETAG 27. The impact position, angles, and rock diameter were considered as variables. A concrete nonlinear material model was applied, and the estimation of damage was done by ABAQUS software. As a result, the damage ratio was found to be less than 1.0 at rock diameters of 0.3 m and 0.5 m, but it was 1.39 when the diameter was 0.7 m. This study could be used as basic data on impact force in the design of the cross section of an eco-pillar debris barrier.

Protective Effects of Traditional Korean Medicine Preparations, Herbs, and Active Compounds on the Blood-brain Barrier in Ischemic Stroke Models (허혈성 뇌졸중 모델에서 혈액-뇌 장벽에 보호효과를 나타내는 한약처방, 한약재 및 활성화합물)

  • Stroke is among the leading causes of death and long-term physical and cognitive disabilities worldwide, affecting an estimated 15 million people annually. The pathophysiological process of stroke is complicated by multiple and coordinated events. The breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in people with stroke can significantly contribute to the development of ischemic brain injury. Therefore, BBB disruption is recognized as a hallmark of stroke; thus, it is important to develop novel therapeutic strategies that can protect against BBB dysfunction in ischemic stroke. Traditional medicines are composed of natural products, which represent a promising source of new ingredients for the development of conventional medicines. Indeed, several studies have shown the effectiveness of Korean medicine on stroke, highlighting the value of Korean medicinal treatment for ischemic stroke. This review summarizes the current information and underlying mechanisms regarding the ameliorating effects of the formula, decoction, herbs, and active components of traditional Korean medicine on cerebral ischemia-induced BBB disruption. These traditional medicines were shown to have protective effects on the BBB in many cellular and animal ischemia models of stroke, and experiments in various animal species, such as mice and rats. In addition, they showed brain-protective effects by protecting the BBB through the regulation of tight junction proteins and matrix metalloproteinase-9, reducing edema, neuroinflammation, and neuronal cell death. We hope that this review will help promote further investigation into the neuroprotective effects of traditional Korean medicines and stimulate the performance of clinical trials on Korean herbal medicine-derived drugs in patients with stroke.

The Numerical Analysis on Insulation Performance with Respect to the Envelope Geometries and Array of Evacuated Powder Panel in Rigid Foam/Evacuated Powder Composite Panels (혼합초단열재에서 진공분말패널의 외피형상 및 패널배열에 따른 단열성능해석)

  • Evacuated powder insulations have long been known to have better thermal performance than existing commercially available insulators, such as fiber glass and CFC-blown foam. To make a composite powder panel, a series of individually evacuated panels was encapsulated in a rigid closed cell foam matrix. The panels were encapsulated in a thin glass sheet barrier to preserve the vacuum. The thermal conductivity of the individual panel was found to be $0.0062W/m^{\circ}K$ by experiment and the polyurethane foam above had a thermal conductivity of $0.024W/m^{\circ}K$. In this study, numerical analysis using finite element method was carried out to investigate insulation performance of rigid foam/evacuated powder composite panel with respect to panel geometries such as panel pitch, panel aspect ratio and panel area ratio. Numerical analysis has indicated that more optimal vacuum panel geometries, much lower overall thermal conductivities can be achieved.

Evaluation of Three-Phase Actuated Operation at Diamond Interchanges (다이아몬드 인터체인지의 3현시 감응제어 평가)

  • The performance of two single-barrier three-phase control systems at diamond interchanges was evaluated for various traffic conditions. To emulate the actuated signal control, hardware-in-the-loop system combined with CORSIM simulation program was used. Two performance measures, average delay and total stops, were used for the evaluation process. Results showed that the two three-phase systems gave similar performance in terms of average delay, but not stops. The delay performance of each phasing system was generally dependent on the traffic pattern and ramp spacing. However, there was a distinct movement preference for each phasing system. The total stops decreased as the spacing increased, and it was the most sensitive variable that can differentiate between the two three-phase systems. It was also shown that the hardware-in-the-loop control could be a good method to overcome the limitations of current simulation technology.

A study on the acoustic performance test method using speaker of a noise reduction device for noise reduction of the 400km/h class high-speed railroad (스피커를 이용한 400km/h급 고속철도 소음저감용 방음벽 상단장치의 음향성능 시험방법에 관한 연구)

  • For the purpose of the acoustic performance evaluation of noise reduction device(NRD) installed at the top of noise barrier for further decreasing of noise level of 400km/h class high-speed railroad(HEMU), the acoustic performance test method using speaker instead of really running railway vehicle was suggested in this paper. For this, noise source location and frequency spectrum of HEMU was analyzed through the field noise test. These data were used for the determination of speaker's installation positions and frequency correction values applied to the speaker noise source. And, 400 meters long NRD was installed at the site where HEMU will be running at a speed of 400km/h. Finally, the outdoor speaker test with and without NRD showed that this NRD could decrease noise level even more than 3dB(A). In the future, the acoustic performance results of NRD conducted with speaker test will be compared with that of field test for HEMU running at a speed of 400km/h.
