  • Linear-tracked typhoons were simulated to investigate the effect of parameter sensitivity at Gyeongnam coastal zone. To do this, appropriateness of the linear-tracked MAEMI(0314) was tested and 175 scenarios were simulated on the basis of virtual MAEMI. The results show surge heights are relatively large at Masan and Tongyeong, and it can be attributed to topographical effects. At Masan, 2.5 m-surge height is probable with the same intensity but slightly different track from the real typhoon MAEMI. At the other stations, surge heights induced by real MAEMI are nearly same as the maximum heights of the virtual typhoons, which indicates the real track of the typhoon MAEMI was almost the most severe one. Surge heights caused by the barometric effect are higher than those by the wind effect, and the former effect shows the maximum at the eye of typhoon.

  • The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has observed the Earth's mass redistribution mainly caused by the variations of groundwater, ice sheet, and sea level since its launch in April 2002. The global gravity model estimated by the GRACE observation is corrected by barometric pressure, and thus represents the change of Earth mass on the Earth's surface and below Earth's surface excluding air mass. However, the total air mass varies due to the water exchange between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere. As a result, the nominal GRACE gravity model should include the Earth's gravity spectrum associated with the total air mass variations, degree 0 and order 0 coefficients of spherical harmonics ($C_{00}$). Because the water vapor content varies mainly on a seasonal time scale, a change of $C_{00}$ (${\delta}C_{00}$) is particularly important to seasonal variations of sea level, and mass balance between northern and southern hemisphere. This result implies that ${\delta}C_{00}$ coefficients should be accounted for the examination of continental scale mass change possibly associated with the climate variations.

  • Ocean tides in Antarctica are not well constrained mostly due to the lack of tidal observations. Especially, tides underneath and around ice shelves are uncertain. InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) data has been used to observe ice shelf movements primarily caused by ocean tides. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to estimate tidal constituents underneath the Sulzberger ice shelf, West Antarctica, solely using ERS-1/2 tandem mission DInSAR (differential InSAR) observations. In addition, the tidal constituents can be estimated in a high-resolution (~200 m) grid which is beyond any tidal model resolution. We assume that InSAR observed ocean tidal heights can be derived after correcting the InSAR data for the effect of atmospheric loading using the inverse barometric effect, solid earth tides, and ocean tide loading. The ERS (European Remote Sensing) tandem orbit configuration of a 1-day separation between SAR data takes diminishes the sensitivity to major tidal constituents including $K_1$ and $S_2$. Here, the dominant tidal constituent $O_1$ is estimated using 8 differential interferograms underneath the Sulzberger ice shelf. The resulting tidal constituent is compared with a contemporary regional tide model (CATS2008a) and a global tide model (TPXO7.1). The InSAR estimated tidal amplitude agrees well with both models with RMS (root-mean-square) differences of < 2.2 cm and the phase estimate corroborating both tide models to within $8^{\circ}$. We conclude that fine spatial scale (~200 m) Antarctic ice shelf ocean tide determination is feasible for dominant constituents using C-band ERS-1/2 tandem mission InSAR.

  • The first 7 years of altimeter data from the TOPEX/POSEIDON(T/P) were analyzed to study the surface circulation and its variability in the East Asian Marginal Seas. Long term averaged T/P sea level time series data where compared with in situ sea level measurements from a float-operated type tide gauge around of south Korea and Japan. T/]P data are a large contaminated by 60-day tidal aliasing effect, very near the alias periods of M2 and 52. When this 60-day effect is removed, the data agree well with the tide gauge data with 4.6 cm averaged RMS difference. The T/P derived sea level variability reveals clearly the well-known, strong current-topography such as Kuroshio. The T/P mean sea level of North Pacific(NP) was higher than Yellow Sea(YS) and East Sea(ES). The T/P sea level variability, with strong eddy and meandering, was the largest in eastern part of Japan and this variability was mainly due to the influence of bottom topography in Kuroshio Extension area.

  • In order to improve the vertical position accuracy, the advantages of GPS and barometric altimeter are combined and used, but in order to fuse the two sensors, the geoid altitude must be compensated. In this paper, we proposed a technique that can calculate geoid altitude in real time even in low-cost embedded systems applied to drones or autonomous vehicles. Since the reference EGM08 is determined by a polynomial of the 2160th order, real-time calculation is impossible in the embedded system. Therefore, by introducing a linear interpolation technique, the amount of calculation was increased, and the storage space was saved by 75% by using the integer geoid height as a grid point. The accuracy of the proposed technique was evaluated through simulation, and it was confirmed that the accuracy of the maximum error is -1.215 m even in the region where the geoid change is rapid.

  • Recently, environmental problems have been deteriorating rapidly. Therefore, there is an urgent need to establish policies and research in the conservation of the global environment. Many researchers are studied in environment systems to prevent and reduce pollution of water, air and soil actively. In this paper, several parameters such as temperature, humidity, illumination, barometric pressure, dew point, water quality data, and air conditions are collected and transmitted thorough wireless sensor network. The field server is located in the coastal and marine area so that any abrupt changes can be detected quickly. In addition, WSN based flooding routing protocol for efficient data transmission is designed to support and monitor information of climate and marin factors.

  • Geographic information system (GIS) technology has useful applications for epidemiology, enabling the detection of spatial patterns of disease dispersion and locating geographic areas at increased risk. In this study, we applied GIS technology to characterize the spatial pattern of mortality due to liver cancer in the autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang in southwest China. A database with liver cancer mortality data for 1971-1973, 1990-1992, and 2004-2005, including geographic locations and climate conditions, was constructed, and the appropriate associations were investigated. It was found that the regions with the highest mortality rates were central Guangxi with Guigang City at the center, and southwest Guangxi centered in Fusui County. Regions with the lowest mortality rates were eastern Guangxi with Pingnan County at the center, and northern Guangxi centered in Sanjiang and Rongshui counties. Regarding climate conditions, in the 1990s the mortality rate of liver cancer positively correlated with average temperature and average minimum temperature, and negatively correlated with average precipitation. In 2004 through 2005, mortality due to liver cancer positively correlated with the average minimum temperature. Regions of high mortality had lower average humidity and higher average barometric pressure than did regions of low mortality. Our results provide information to benefit development of a regional liver cancer prevention program in Guangxi, and provide important information and a reference for exploring causes of liver cancer.

  • The water level variation due to the Typhoon around the coast of Pusan in the southern sea of Korea is investigated from the observed tidal record. Water level variations at six stations along the coast are discussed in association with the meteorological data. The characteristics of storm surge at Pusan during Typhoon Thelma in 1987 is analysed using the observed data, and it is performed the numerical simulation of storm surge which includes a inverse barometric effect due to the horizontal distribution of sea sur-face pressure. From the calculation results, the peak value of storm surge in the coast of Pusan was occur-red around the 01:00 July 16th, which is well coincident with the observed water level variation at the Kadukdo. However, the calculated value at the Pusan TBM is inconsistent with the observed one, which is regarded due to a reason that the Tidal Bench Mark (TBM) locates in the channel. In the computation results, the maximum surge occurs at the coast of Nakdong estuary, which is considered primarily due to a topographic effect, and water level variation exceeded 2.5 meter in these areas while only about 60 cm in another coasts.

  • Daily mean sea level variability and its response to atmospheric pressure along the coasts of the northwestern Pacific Ocean are investigated. Daily values of sea level and atmospheric pressure covering the period 1976-1986 from 72 stations are analyzed. The sea level and the air pressure in all the data set have a definite seasonal signal, and higher frequency oscillations at time scales of several days to several weeks are also observed. Among the short-period oscillations of sea level with periods shorter than six months, the period of around 3 or 4 months is dominant in most study stations. According to the statistical analysis of sea level and air pressure, the length scale of sea level variability is smaller than that of air pressure for the present study area. The overall variability of sea level is found to be the smallest around Hokkaido, Japan and the largest in the China coasts. Large short-period (< 6 months) sea level variability is found in the southern coasts of China and Hokkaido, and large long-period (> 6 months) variability in the southern coasts of Japan and Korea along Tsushima Current and Kuroshio. The patterns of air pressure are very similar to those of sea level. The air pressure field is found to account for 31% of the overall sea level variability in the study area. Conside.ins the fact that the results (40%) of Pang and Oh (1995) were obtained through monthly sea level, the present result implies that the short-period sea level variability is less affected by air pressure. Generally the sea level response to air pressure are found to be isostatic, but significantly nonisostatic for the periods around 4 months and for those of 2 to 4 days. In particular, nonisostatic response for higher frequencies seem to be due to the restrictions to water transport necessary for barometric responsein the Korea Strait.
