Three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships (3D-QSARs) for the herbicidal activities against pre-emergence barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) by new 2-(4-(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyloxy)phenoxy)-N-phenylpropion amide derivatives were studied quantitatively using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methodologies. The best CoMFA model (AI-2) and CoMSIA model (AII-4) were derived from an atom based fit alignment and a combination of CoMFA fields. The herbicidal activities from CoMFA and CoMSIA contour maps showed that the activity will be able to be increased according to the substituents variation on the N-phenyl ring.
QSARs (Quantitative structure-activity relationships) between a series of new cyclohexanedione derivatives (5-benzofuryl-2-[1-(alkoxyimino)-alkyl]-3-hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-ones) and their herbicidal activity against Rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli.) were discussed quantitatively using 2D-QSAR and holographic (H) QSAR methods. Generally, the HQSAR models have better predictability and fitness than the 2D-QSAR models. The herbicidal activities against Barnyard grass with 2D-QSAR II model were dependent upon Balaban indice (BI) of molecule and hydrophobicity of $R_1$ and $R_3$ group. And also, the $R_3=ethyl$ group, according to the information of the optimized HQSAR IV model, was more contribute to the herbicidal activities against Rice plant, while the 5-(cyclohex-3-enyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran ring part was not contribute to the herbicidal activities against two plants.

In order to deal with the problem that phytoremediation takes long time in achieving the practical effect, the enhanced phytoremediation by Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was conducted. In addition, we examined the synergistic effect by adding PSM (phosphate -solubilizing microbes) and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) to the arsenic contaminated soil in the vicinity of the abandoned mine. The removal efficiency of arsenic in the site with PSM application increased about 16% when compared to control site, which was due to increase of plant biomass. The EDTA has been successfully utilized in respect of enhanced mobility and solubility of arsenic in the soil. As a result, BF (bioaccumulation factor) significantly increased but the inhibition of plant growth resulted in 20% reduction of arsenic removal efficiency. The application of PSM and EDTA may enhance the efficiency of phytoremediation. However, the time and method of EDTA application should be further examined to reach the maximum removal efficiency.
The herbicidal activities against the pre-emergence of rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-gall) with changing substituents $(R_1-R_4)$ of new 5-benzofuryl-2-[1-(alkoxyimino) alkyl]-3-hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives as substrate molecules were studied quantitatively using comparative molecular field analyses (CoMFA). The optimized CoMFA models (rice plant: A5 & barnyard grass: B3) were derived from atom based fit alignment and a combination of CoMFA fields. The two models for herbicidal activity against two plants showed the best predictability and fitness ($q^2$>0.6 & ${r^2}_{ncv.}$>0.94) for the herbicidal activities. Also, CoMFA-HINT contour maps showed that the selective herbicidal activity between rice plant and barnyard grass depends on the hydrophobicity of $R_2\;and\;R_3$ groups in molecule. Therefore, it is expected that the herbicidal activity against barnyard grass will be improved by the introduction of the steric bulk small and hydrophobic group.
New photodynamic herbicidal 2,3-dihydro-2,2,4,5,6-pentamethylbenzofuran-5-yl, (I) and 2,3-dihydro-2-ethyl-2,4,5,6-tetramethylbenzofuran-5-yl, (II) substituents in 6-benzofury-2-[1-( alkoxyimino )alkyl]-3 hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives were synthesized and their herbicidal activities against rice plant (Oryza sativa L.), barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and pickerel weed (Monochoria vaginalis presl.) were measured under submerged pre and post-emergence conditions. Particularly, a series of (I) compounds showed good selective herbicidal activities between the 3 leaf stage of rice plant and barnyard grass at rates of $0.25{\sim}0.0007kg/ha$. The structure activity relationships (SAR) on the herbicidal activity with changing N-alkoxy groups were discussed quantitatively. According to the SAR results, it was expected that the selectivity factor between seed of rice plant and barnyard grass should be rely on the N-alkoxy groups with bigger dipole moment and bigger (or smaller) $B_3$ constant than optimal value $(B_3)_{opt.}=4.41{\AA}$. Compared with (I), the (II) substituents showed more superior herbicidal activities.
We discuss that the growth inhibition activities against root and shoot of rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) by N-phenyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalimide (A) and N-phenyl-3,4-dimethylmaleimide (B) derivatives with changing substituents can be explained and predicted using comparative molecular field analyses (CoMPA) method. And the results show that the cross-validation value, $q^2$ at three components and Pearson correlation coefficient, $r^2$ were rice plant: shoot; $r^2=0.987$, $q^2=0.387$ & root; $r^2=0.923$, $q^2=0.307$ and barnyard grass: shoot; $r^2=0.902$, $q^2=0.535$ & root; $r^2=0.900$, $q^2=0.450$, respectively. In addition, The activities of unknown compounds were predicted by CoMFA method. From the contour map of (A) derivatives, the selective factors to remove barnyard grass takes positive charge on the benzylic carbon atom (C27), negative charged carbon atom (C29) of meta position and steric bulky groups on the cyclic imino ring (C7-C8).
A some of synthesized 2,3-dihydro-2,2,4,6,7-pentamethylbenzofuran-5-yl substituents in 5-benzofuryl-2-[1-(alkoxyimino)alkyl]-3-hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives as substrates were found to show herbicidal activity against rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) with post emergence under submerged conditions. The substrate with $R_{1}$=methyl substituents, $1{\sim}5$ showed the higher herbicidal activity to the seed, 3 leaf stage of rice plant and barnyard grass. The structure activity relationships (SARs) on the herbicidal activity of $R_{1}$ and $R_{2}$ on the azomethine bond in substrate were analysized. In the condition of $R_{1}$ groups are same, the herbicidal activity against 3 leaf stage of rice plant were governed by the optimal hydrophobicity $(logP)_{opt.}=4.57$. Whereas, in the case of barnyard grass, the herbicidal activities were largely dependent upon the steric effect, $B_{2}$ constant than hydrophobicity. In order to take the selective herbicidal activity between rice plant and barnyard grass, it is assumed that the (S) should be a round shape with higher hydrophobicity (logP>4.57) than optimal value. Also, the $R_{1}$ groups must be small and the $R_{2}$ groups are advisable to be unsaturate.
A series of aqueous extracts and residues from leaves, stems, roots, pods and seeds of Korean black soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) to determine their allelopathic activities through petri-dish and greenhouse experiments, and the results showed highest inhibition in the extracts or residues from the seeds, and followed by pods. The extracts of 40g dry tissue $\textrm{L}^{-1}$ applied on filter paper in petri-dish bioassay significantly inhibited root growth of alfalfa, and especially extracts from seeds and pods reduced root length of alfalfa more than those from leaves, stems, or roots. Plant height, root length, shoot and root dry weights of barnyard grass were reduced significantly by residue incorporation of seeds and pods as the incorporated amount increased. These results suggest that black soybean plants had herbicidal potential, and their activities were exhibited differently depending on plant parts.
Compositae plants are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to agricultural crops as well as weed species. Aqueous or methanol extracts and plant residues from leaves of Xanthium occidentale were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) to determine its allelopathic effects, and the results showed that the extracts applied onto filter paper significantly inhibited seed germination as well as root growth of alfalfa. Aqueous leaf extracts of $40g\;L^{-1}$ were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa, while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Leaf residue incorporation at $100g\;kg^{-1}$ into soil on seedling growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) inhibited both shoot and root fresh weights of barnyard grass by 94 and $96\%$, respectively. Methanol extracts from BuOn and EtOAc fractions of X. occidentale reduced alfalfa root growth more than did those from hexane and water fractions. The results based on bioassay of extracts and residues show that X. occidentale had potent an allelopathic activity against other plant species.
To improve the growth inhibition activities and selectivities for quinclorac family, novel 3-substituted phenyl-5-(3,7-dichloro-8-quinolinyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives as the substrate were synthesized and their the activities ($pI_{50}$) against shoot and root of rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and barn-yard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) were measured. And the quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) between physicochemical parameters of the substitutents (R) on phenyl group and the activities ($pI_{50}$) were analyzed quantitatively. According to the SAR analyses, the substrates of planar conformation showed higher herbicidal activities against barnyard grass than rice plant. The activities against rice plant depend on the electronic effect (shoots: ${\sigma}_{opt.}=0.49$ & root: $R_{opt.}=-0.15$) of substituents, whereas the activities against shoots and roots of barnyard grass depend on hydrophobicity (${\pi}_{opt.}=0.37{\sim}2.40$). There were conditions of selective growth inhibition activity against barnyard grass when such a ortho-substituted electron donating substituents showing the hydrophobicity value, ${\pi}=2.40$ were introduced on the phenyl ring. The 2-tolyl substituent predicted from SAR equations was expected to have better growth inhibition activity and selectivity (${\Delta}pI_{50}=1.26$) for barnyard grass.
