A Study on the Physicochemical Properties and the Nitrite Scavenging Ability of Japanese Sumac Extracts (붉나무 추출물의 이화학적 특성과 아질산염 소거능에 관한 연구)

  • Japanese sumac (Rhus javanica) is one of the common herbaceous plants growing over the country. This study was conducted to investigate the extraction characteristics and physiological activities inluding nitrite scavenging ability of the water extracts from leaf, fruit and bark of Japanease sumac. Extraction yield was 6.62~13.84%, free amino acids were detected as 24 kinds with 37.9 mg/100g in leaf extract, 23 kinds with 27.0 mg/100g in fruit extract and 27 kinds with 39.0 mg/100g in bark extract, respectively, and seven kinds essential amino acids were detected. Total contents of flavonoids equivalent to naringin were 587.2 mg/100g in bark extract, 557.3 mg/100g in fruit extract and 379.9 mg/100g in leaf extract, respectively. Total contents of phenolics equivalent to gallic acid were 111.2 mg/100g in leaf extract, 108.4 mg/100g in fruit extract and 80.4 mg/100g in bark extract, respectively. The nitrite scavenging ability of extracts was order of 61.93% in bark extract>57.38% in fruit extract>55.49% in leaf extract, and was 78.1~100% of those of BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) equivalents at pH 1.2. The electron donating ability was order of 47.38% in fruit extract>43.06% in leaf extract>38.55% in bark extract, and was compared to 65.6%, 58.8% and 53.6% of those of BHT equivalents, respectively. The reduction power was evaluated to 37% higher in leaf extract, 43% higher in fruit extract and 46% higher in bark extract than those of BHT equivalents. The metal chelating ability of extracts was considerably low and was order of 27.3% in bark extract>20.6% in leaf extract>11.2% in fruit extract.

Study on the Dyeing Behavior of Palmatine, a Major Coloring Compound of Phellodendron Bark, on Cotton Fabric (황백 색소 팔마틴의 면직물에 대한 염색성 연구)

  • This research investigated the dyeing behavior of palmatine (a major coloring compound of Phellodendron bark in addition to berberine) using mercerization (M), tannic acid (T), mercerization-tannic acid (MT), and tannic acid -mercerization (TM) pretreatments. Mercerization was conducted using $20^{\circ}C$ of 20% NaOH for 5 minutes. Tannic acid treatment was conducted using 15% o.w.f. solution of tannic acid at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and fixed with potassium antimonyl tartrate trihydrate. Dyeing was conducted using 1% o.w.f. palmatine chloride hydrate with 1:100 liquor ratio at $10-95^{\circ}C$ for 10-60 minutes in a dyebath of pH 3-9. MT method resulted in the highest dye uptake and was two times higher than the average dye uptake of T method. MT method provided the best result when the dyeing temperature was $80^{\circ}C$ or $95^{\circ}C$ and the dyeing time was 60 minutes. The pH of the dyebath had less effect on the dye uptake but a pH higher than 5 provided better results. The study confirmed that palmatine is a major coloring compound of Phellodendron bark and that the MT method can be used as a successful cotton dyeing method.

Effects of Organic Amendments on Soil Microbial Community in Red Pepper Field (시용 유기물의 종류가 고추 재배지 토양 미생물상에 미치는 영향)

  • Diverse organic amendments available in local areas have been used to improve soil quality in red pepper field and so the need for investigating the soil chemical and biological properties changed by the organic amendments application is increasing. Soil microbial diversities were measured by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and Biolog $EcoPlate^{TM}$. Compost was most effective for improving soil chemical properties including pH, EC, total nitrogen, P, K, and Ca, and bark increased soil organic matter significantly (P=0.05). Compost increased the fatty acids indicating actinomycetes and vascular arbuscular fungi, and ratio of cy19:0/18:1w7c and monounsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids in soils in PLFA analysis. Bark increased soil fungal indicators in PLFA analysis (P=0.05). Principal component analysis of Biolog EcoPlate data and PLFA differentiated the compost- and bark-amended soils from other organic matteramended soils especially the soil incorporated with compost. More researches are needed to use bark for improving soil microbial properties because the soil chemical and microbiological properties caused by compost and bark are significantly different.

  • This study investigated effects of bark acidity, leaf acidity and water soluble sulfur contents by SO$_2$, 1-2 seedling of Prunus yedoensis and Ligustrum obtusifolium were treated 5 level (0. 0.5, 1, 2, 4 ppm) of SO$_2$. The tallowing results were obtained; In the case of bark and leaf acidities, pH values decreased as SO$_2$ concentration was high. Prunus yedoensis compare with Ligustrum obtusifolium had high relative susceptibility because rates of increase in bark and leaf acidities were high according to SO$_2$ concentration. Water soluble sulfur contents in the leaves also increased as SO$_2$ concentration was high. Prunus yedoensis compare with Ligustrum obtusifolium had high relative susceptibility because increase rates of water soluble sulfur contents in the leaves were high according to SO$_2$ concentration.

Determination of Stereochemical Structure of a Grandidentatin Isomer from Populus alba × glandulosa Bark (현사시나무 수피에서 분리한 Grandidentatin Isomer의 입체구조결정)

  • The bark of Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was collected, air-dried and extracted with 70% aqueous acetone. Then it was successively partitioned with n-hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc and $H_2O$. Repeated Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and preparative TLC on the EtOAc soluble fraction gave a grandidentatin isomer. The structure was elucidated as grandidentatin A (cis-2-hydroxycyclohexyl 6-O-p-coumaroyl-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside) on the basis of spectroscopic evidences such as $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR, 2D-NMR and MALDI TOF-MS spectrum followed by acid hydrolysis. Grandidentatin A was identified here for the first time in Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa bark, and to the bset of our knowledge it has not been reported in any other literature.

Effects of Functional Ingredients Supplementation as a Bulking Agent in Composting of Swine Manure (돈분의 퇴비화에 있어 악취 제거 기능성 물질의 첨가 효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of functional ingredients with supplementation as a bulking agent in composting of swine manure. Treatments were T1 & T5 ; Swine mature+Vermiculite, T2 & T6 ; Swine manure+Perlite, T3 & T7 ; Swine manure+Vermiculite+Perlite, T4 & T8 ; Swine manure+Bark. T1, T2, T3 and T4 were supplemented with functional ingredients on d 0 of composting, T5, T6, T7 and T8 were supplemented with functional ingredients on d 3 of composting. Functional ingredients were Fermkito and Yucca. During the composting period, changes of temperature were showed traditionally composting trend. Volatile fatty acids were decreased regardless of treatments in functional ingredients supplementation. Organic matter, T-N and C/N ratio were showed higher bark treatments than other treatments. pH and EC were net differences among the treatments. P$_2$O$_{5}$ and $K_2$O were showed level of 1-3%. In heavy metal, Cr were showed higher in vermiculite treatment than other treatments. In conclusion, vermiculite and perlite treatments were greater composting effects than bark.

Effect of Various Types of Acid Catalysts on Phenol Liquefaction of Pinus densiflora Bark (소나무 수피의 페놀액화에 대한 다양한 산 촉매의 효과)

  • Various types of acids, such as mineral acids, organic acids, and organic sulfonic acids, were used as catalysts in order to investigate their effectiveness during phenol liquefaction of pine bark. Hydrochloric arid was the most effective acid catalyst of the mineral acids used in this experiment for the phenol liquefaction, but the amount of the acid needed for more than 90% liquefaction was at least 11 mmol. Among the carboxylic acids used triflouroacetic acid (TFA) was effective for the liquefaction, but it was not possible to obtain liquefaction of more than 80%. Organic sulfonic acids, p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) and methanesulfonic acid (MSA), showed remarkable effects for liquefaction, even in small amounts and at low liquefaction temperatures. Especially in the case of PTSA, a 92% liquefaction yield was obtained at the liquefaction condition of 14$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Therefore, it was evident that the PTSA is a good acid catalyst for the phenol-pine bark liquefaction system.

Changes in Characteristics of Bark and Piggery Manure By-Product Fertilizers During the Composting (수피${\cdot}$돈분 부산물 비료의 부숙단계별 특성 변화)

  • Objective of this research was to draw the basic criteria of the compost maturity evaluation, by assessing the stability of chemical and physical properties of the bark and piggery manure byproduct composts during the composting. Colors of the mature composts were black and dark brown for the bark and piggery manure by-product composts, respectively. Good earthy odor was detected for both by-product composts after approximately 40 days composting, by which odors of the original raw materials were disappeared. pH and EC of the mature bark: compost were stabilized at 6.5 and 1dS/m, respectively. The respective values for the piggery compost were stabilized at 7.2 and 6dS/m. Organic matter contents were decreased with time to be stabilized at about 60% at the end of composting. During composting, total N contents of the bark and piggery composts were maintained at $1.1{\sim}1.5%$, and $1.5{\sim}2.2%$, respectively. For both fertilizers, $NH_4-N$ contents were increased at the initial stage bur. decreased after the middle stages of decomposition, resulting in the increase of $NO_3-N$ contents. Total inorganic N contents were increased with time. C/N ratios of both mature composts were stabilized at $25{\sim}27$. CEC of the bark compost was increased logarithmically with time and that of mature compost was 87cmol(+)/㎏. CEC of the piggery manure compost was hyperbolic function with rime and reached at 70cmol(+)/㎏ at the mature stage. Crude fiber analysis indicated that relative contents of lignin were increased with composting by compensating for the decreases of cellulose and hemicellulose contents.

Two New Lichen Species, Thelopsis ullungdoensis and Phylloblastia gyeongsangbukensis from Korea

  • Two new species, Thelopsis ullungdoensis and Phylloblastia gyeongsangbukensis are described from Ullung-Do (Island), South Korea. The closest relatives from Europe and Korea are epiphytic Thelopsis flaveola which differs by their immersed or semi-immersed yellow ascomata, ascospores without halo and their habitat of smooth bark (mainly Fagus) in humid and cold climates. Thelopsis gangwondoensis differs by its bigger semi-immersed ascomata (600-700 ㎛ in diam.), oblong halonate ascospores (8-12 × 6-8 ㎛) and its habitat of smooth bark of deciduous trees. P. gyeongsangbukensis differs from its relatives within the genus in having 5-septate ascospores (22-26 × 6-8 ㎛), semi-immersed, subglobose ascomata with a flattened top (250-400 ㎛) and a thin, matt, uneven gray-brown to gray-green continuous thallus without isidia.

Effect of feeding Korean red pine bark extract on the levels of fatty acid and cholesterol in chicken meats (닭고기의 콜레스테롤과 지방산 함량에 관한 소나무 껍질추출물의 급여효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary Korean red pine bark extract as an antibiotic replacements on cholesterol, fatty acids and the shelf-life of chicken meat. To accomplish this, chickens were fed the optimal level of red pine bark extract that was found to replace antibiotics in the diet of broilers. A total of 180 male broilers(Ross strain 308) were divided into three treated groups, T1(control group), T2(8 ppm of avilamycin) and T3(65 ppm of red pine bark extract per kg diet). The lipid content was reduced by 24.67% and 20.49% in T3 group, while the cholesterol level also decreased significantly in the T3 group by 20.49% and 20.55% when compared to the T1 and T2 groups, respectively. In addition, the saturated fatty acid level was lower in the T3 group than in the T1 and T2 groups, while the unsaturated fatty acid level of the T3 group was significantly higher than those of the other groups. The TBARS value of chicken thigh muscle containing its skin on the 7th day of low temperature storage was significantly lower by 23.86% and 21.17% in the T3 group than in the T1 and T2 groups, respectively. Evaluation of the color of the meat revealed that the $L^*$value (lightness) and $b^*$value(yellowness) were higher in the T3 group than in the T1 and the T2 groups, but that the pH was significantly lower in the T3. Based on the results of this study, the addition of 65 ppm red pine bark extract to the diet of broilers should improve their meat quality with respect to the lipid contents and shelf-life when compared to the addition of antibiotics.
