  • Increasing concern for the environment in Korea has led to the demand that major policies and large-scale development projects be subjected to detailed impact assessment. This paper reports on the state of data related to the prediction of the environmental impact (EIA) to emphasize the importance of data quality. Environmental impact statements (EIS) consulted with the Ministry of Environment of Korea were analyzed from 1981 through 1992. Many of assessors used existing data and collected supplementary data from field survey. Most of the results of EIA are presented directly or summarized on maps and as graphics. For the national purpose, large source of quality-controlled data such as atmospheric data have been developed, However, there are the deficiency in data to analyze the impact of human activity, and data gaps and incompatibilities among systems. Consequently, the development of data bank systems including computer database and remotely-sensed satellite data is required to improve the quality of data which are relevant to EIA. The data bank system should be organized meaningfully in minimum time with a least cost, and measurement standards must be made explicit. Geographical information systems (GIS) are applicable to the graphic presentation or to the impact prediction model.

  • Importance of Information Systems in banking industry is higher than that of other industries. This study, based on a case study of a bank, analyzes the current status of information systems (IS) audit and proposes future directions in the area of IS control and audit. Major problems identified in the study include deficiency of IS and audit process, and inability of audit function to improve IS process. In addition, deficiency of staffing level and investment in R&D, and lack of competency and independence of audit staff are identified. In order to solve the problems, the following directions were proposed proper division of functions among audit related departments, utilization of outside audit function, and adoption of CSA, CAAT, career path program, risk-based audit approach. The results of the studs will provide valuable implications to banks and companies in other industries. Also the research framework employed in the study can be utilized in the future research in IS control and audit.

  • Previous research on data extraction and integration for data warehousing has concentrated mainly on the relational DBMS or partly on the object-oriented DBMS. Mostly, it describes issues related with the change data (deltas) capture and the incremental update by using the triggering technique of active database systems. But, little attention has been paid to data extraction approaches from other types of source systems like hierarchical DBMS, etc. and from source systems without triggering capability. This paper argues, from the practical point of view, that we need to consider not only the types of information sources and capabilities of ETT tools but also other factors of source systems such as operational characteristics (i.e., whether they support DBMS log, user log or no log, timestamp), and DBMS characteristics (i.e., whether they have the triggering capability or not, etc), in order to find out appropriate data extraction techniques that could be applied to different source systems. Having applied several different data extraction techniques (e.g., DBMS log, user log, triggering, timestamp-based extraction, file comparison) to S bank's source systems (e.g., IMS, DB2, ORACLE, and SAM file), we discovered that data extraction techniques available in a commercial ETT tool do not completely support data extraction from the DBMS log of IMS system. For such IMS systems, a new date extraction technique is proposed which first creates Index database and then updates the data warehouse using the Index database. We illustrates this technique using an example application.

  • Mutual savings banks have today met many difficulties because of various reasons. To overcome these difficulties, they have to change to be more customer centric and to adopt customer satisfaction management so that they can satisfy customers asking for diversified and professional service. This study aims to investigate the relationship between various dimensions of service quality and service performance such as customer satisfaction, customer trust, and repurchase intension. This study categorized service quality as interaction quality, outcome quality, and physical environment quality. Moreover, this study examined whether interest sensitivity and bank reputation had the moderating effects between service quality and service performance. The study results may provide practitioners and researchers in financial industry with some implications and guidelines for mutual savings banks' competitiveness.

  • This study analyzes the characteristics of customer's preferences on banking channels (branches, automated machines, telebanking, internet banking, and mobile banking) and examines the factors influencing channel usage. To accomplish this, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis are performed using customer data from Bank A. The analysis reveals that customers primarily utilizing branch counter transactions have a significant impact on the profitability of 1st and 2nd grade banks, particularly among the age group of 50 years and above. Additionally, it is observed that as customers' loan, deposit, and financial product holdings increase, branch counter transactions also increase. On the other hand, it is found that as the usage of mobile banking decreases in terms of loans and deposits, transaction volume increases.

  • Since flash memory cannot be overwritten, new data are updated in new area. If data are frequently updated, garbage collection which is achieved by erasing blocks, should be performed to reclaim new area. Hence, because the count of erase operations is limited due to characteristics of flash memory, every block should be evenly written and erased. However, if data with access locality are processed by cost benefit algorithm with separation of hot block ad cold block though the performance of processing is hight wear-leveling is not even. In this paper, we propose CB-MB (Cost Benefit between Multi Bank) algorithm in which hot data are allocated in one bank and cold data in another bank, and in which role of hot bank and cold bank is exchanged every period. CB-MB shows that its performance is 30% better than cost benefit algorithm with separation of cold block and hot block its wear-leveling is about a third of that in standard deviation.

  • Two-dimensional (2-D) X-ray computerized tomography (CT) equipments are widely used in industrial and medical fields, and nowadays studies on reconstruction algorithm for 3-D cone-beam acquisition systems are active for better utilization. The authors recent-By have proposed a fast reconstruction aigorithm using tree-structured filter bank for 2-D C1, and shown the algorithm is applicable to an approximate reconstruction of 3-D CT. For exact 3-D CT reconstruction, however, we have to backproject 1-D signal into 3-D space. This paper proposes a fast implementation method for this back-projection by use of tree-structured filter bank. and shows the proposed method works approximately 700 times faster than the direct one with almost same reconstruction image quality.

  • We propose a weighted filter bank analysis and model adaptation (WFBA-MA) scheme to improve the utilization of uncorrupted or less severely corrupted frequency regions for robust speech recognition. A weighted met frequency cepstral coefficient is obtained by weighting log filter bank energies with reliability coefficients and hidden Markov models are also modified to reflect the local reliabilities. Experimental results on TIDIGITS database corrupted by band-limited noises and car noise indicated that the proposed WFBA-MA scheme utilizes the uncorrupted speech information well, significantly improving recognition performance in comparison to multi-band speech recognition systems.
