  • Effective call admission control is desirable to control an ATM traffics. It should provide high fairness and utilization for different kinds of services during call admission. Complete bandwidth sharing method is efficient for utilization of bandwidth but not efficient for fairness of call admission. Complete bandwidth partitioning method is efficient for fairness but not efficient for utilization. We propose a new CST(Complete Sharing with Threshold) algorithm using threshold on a total link to improve fairness and utilization.

  • UHD content is characterized by higher bandwidth requirements to provide seamless playback. The existing HTTP adaptive streaming scheme periodically requests video segment of lower quality than the available bandwidth in the steady state. In the steady state, the On-Off pattern is repeated due to the difference of the available bandwidth and the encoding rate of the content. And the repeated Off interval is causing the problem that can not efficiently use the available bandwidth. In the wireless environment where the delay and loss rate are higher with large bandwidth fluctuations, this problem is exacerbated because the available bandwidth is estimated inaccurately. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a segment scheduling scheme for efficient bandwidth utilization of UHD contents streaming in wireless environment. Proposed scheme is a group segment that simultaneously reqeusts multiple segments in one request message in order to reduce frequency of OFF interval. Through simulation, Our scheme improves bandwidth utilization.

  • This paper proposes an efficient bandwidth utilization (EBU) algorithm that utilizes the unused bandwidth in dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) of a 10-gigabit-capable passive optical network (XGPON). In EBU, an available byte counter of a queue can be negative and the unused remainder of an available byte counter can be utilized by the other queues. In addition, EBU uses a novel polling scheme to collect the requests of queues as soon as possible. We show through analysis and simulations that EBU improves performance compared to that achieved with existing methods. In addition, we describe the hardware implementation of EBU. Finally we show the test results of the hardware implementation of EBU.

  • Variable wireless channel is a big challenge for real-time video applications, and the rate adaptation of realtime video streaming becomes a hot topic. Intra-video coding is important for high-quality video communication and industrial video applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive scheme for real-time video transmission with intra-only coding over a wireless network. The key idea of this scheme is to estimate the instantaneous remaining capacity of the network to adjust the quality of the next several video frames, which not only can keep low queuing delay and ensure video quality, but also can respond to bandwidth changes quickly. We compare our scheme with three different schemes in the video transmission system. The experimental results show that our scheme has higher bandwidth utilization and faster bandwidth change response, while maintaining low queuing delay.

  • Provisioning of quality of service (QoS) is a key issue in any multi-media system. However, in wireless systems, supporting QoS requirements of different traffic types is a more challenging problem due to the need to simultaneously minimize two performance metrics - the probability of dropping a handover call and the probability of blocking a new call. Since QoS requirements are not as stringent for non-real-time traffic, as opposed to real-time traffic, more calls can be accommodated by releasing some bandwidth from the already admitted non-real-time traffic calls. If the released bandwidth that is used to handle handover calls is larger than the released bandwidth that is used for new calls, then the resulting probability of dropping a handover call is smaller than the probability of blocking a new call. In this paper, we propose an efficient call admission control algorithm that relies on adaptive multi-level bandwidth-allocation scheme for non-realtime calls. The scheme allows reduction of the call dropping probability, along with an increase in the bandwidth utilization. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme is capable of attaining negligible handover call dropping probability without sacrificing bandwidth utilization.

  • In this paper, we propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm for multimedia services over Ethernet PONs (passive optical networks). The proposed algorithm is composed of a low-level scheduler in the optical network unit (ONU) and a high-level scheduler in the optical line terminal (OLT). The hierarchical DBA algorithm can provide expansibility and efficient resource allocation in an Ethernet PON system in which the packet scheduler is separated from the queues. In the proposed DBA algorithm, the OLT allocates bandwidth to the ONUs in proportion to the weight associated with their class and queue length, while the ONU preferentially allocates its bandwidth to queues with a static priority order. The proposed algorithm provides an efficient resource utilization by reducing the unused remaining bandwidth caused by the variable length of the packets. We also define the service classes and present control message formats conforming to the multi-point control protocol (MPCP) over an Ethernet PON. In order to evaluate the performance, we designed an Ethernet PON system on the basis of IEEE 802.3ah "Ethernet in the first mile" (EFM) using OPNET and carried out simulations. The results are analyzed in terms of the channel utilization, queuing delay, and ratio of the unused remaining bandwidth.

  • A wireless router is a device which allows several wireless clients to share an internet line using NAT (Network Address Translation). In a school or a small office environment where many clients use multiple wireless routers, a client may select anyone of wireless routers so that most clients can be clustered to a small set of the wireless routers. In such a case, there exists load unbalancing problem between clients and wireless routers. One of its result is that clients using the busiest router get poor service. The other is that the resource utilization of the whole wireless routers becomes very low. In order to resolve the problems, we propose a load sharing scheme to maximize network bandwidth utilization based on multiple SSID. In a time internal, the proposed scheme keeps to show the available bandwidth information of all the possible wireless routers to clients through multiple SSID. A new client can select the most available band with router. This scheme allows to achieve a good load balancing between clients and routers in terms of bandwidth utilization. We implemented the proposed scheme with ASUS WL 500G wireless router and performed experiments. Experimental results show the bandwidth utilization improvement compared to the existing method.

  • WFQ (Weighted Fair Queuing) is the most popular fair queuing algorithm, but it had the inherent drawback of a poor bandwidth utilization, particularly under the traffic requiring a low rate but tight delay bound such as internet phone, It was recently identified that the poor utilization is mainly due to non optimized latency of a flow and then LOFQ(Latency-Optimized Fair Queuing) to overcome the drawback was introduced, LOFQ was also improved through introducing an occupied resource optimization function and the implementation complexity of recursive resource transformation was reduced with revising the transformation scheme. However, the performance of LOFQ has been evaluated by means of simulation, so that there are some difficulties in evaluating the performance in the terms of the accuracy and evaluation time, In this paper, we develop how to analytically compute the bandwidth utilization in LOFQ.

  • The superframe structure of IEEE 802.15.4, an international standard for low rate WPAN, is composed of CAP(Contention access period) and CFP(Contention free period). CAP is the contention-based access period, while CFP is contention-free access period for supporting QoS by allocating fixed bandwidth. The standard can support QoS for only a few devices, because the maximum number of GTSs is 7. Furthermore, as the value of BO (Beacon order) or SO (Superframe order) increases, the size of a time slot increases. This makes it difficult to precisely allocate bandwidth for any device, because the bandwidth is allocated by the unit of GTS. The proposed scheme of this paper can reduce the waste of BW in CFP by adaptively reducing the size of a time slot in CFP as the value of BO or SO increases and increase the number of GTSs to 127 by modifying the standard. The performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme can dramatically increase the bandwidth utilization during the CFP when comparing with IEEE 802.15.4.

  • Current policies for sharing bandwidth increase average throughput and improve utilization of the bandwidth in the local network. However, with these policies, a central administer, which is responsible for allocating bandwidth to each network flow, cannot allocate resources based on user characteristics. Thus, it leads to unfair bandwidth allocation because it does not guarantee services based on user characteristics. Therefore, we propose a novel negotiation method to share the bandwidth in a limited bandwidth network, in which, a user negotiates with other users to gain more resource. Ideally, we use a fuzzy system to infer and determine whether a device will request bandwidth or not based on the current usage of the given device. We conduct two experiments consisting of a video streaming simulation in OPNET and a real-time video streaming in WebRTC. The results of the experiment indicate that the proposed method can flexibly share the bandwidth utilization based on user's requirement in the network.
