Automatic repeated recalling from individual computing equipments such as PC and workstations, to access ATM networks may result in call overload to networks. Call overload causes to waste network resources and fail to meet user call processing QoS requirements. We evaluate two call connection request methods: the back-off recall method(BRM) which makes recall with random waiting time after rejection, and the direct recall method(DRM) which repeats call connection request whenever call request is rejected. We evaluate their performances by simulation and it shows that as the total number of attached terminals to each access node increases, BRM performs better than DRM in terms of the call acceptance level and effective network bandwidth utilization.

In this paper we propose the hierarchical-based dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for multi-class services in Ethernet-PON. The proposed algorithm consists of the high level scheduler in OLT and the low level scheduler in ONU. The hierarchical architecture is able to provide scalability and resource efficiency in Ethernet-PON which has the distributed nature of the scheduling domain, with queues and the scheduler located at a large distance from each other. We also propose three dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms for the low level scheduler: Proportional Allocation algorithm, Maximum Request First Allocation (MRFA) algorithm and High Priority First Allocation (HPFA) algorithm. We implement the Ethernet-PON standardized in the IEEE 802,3ah using OPNET. We also evaluate and analyze the performance for the proposed algorithms in terms of channel utilization, queuing delay and the amount of remainder.
Most work on multimedia storage systems has assumed that client will be serviced using a round-robin strategy. The server services the clients in rounds and each client is allocated a time slice within that round. Furthermore, most such algorithms are evaluated on the basis of a tightly coupled cost function. This is the basis of well-known algorithm such as FCFS, SCAN, SCAN-EDF, etc. In this paper, we describe a scheduling module called Request Unifier(RU) that takes as input, a set of client request, and a set of constraints on the desired performance such as client waiting time or maximum disk bandwidth, and a cost function. It produces as output a Unified Read Request(URR), telling the storage server which data items to read and when these data items to be delivered to the clients. Given a cost function, a URR is optimal if there is no other URR satisfying the constraints with a lower cost. We present three algorithms in this paper that can accomplish this kind of request merging and compare their performance through an experimental evaluation.

In this paper, we propose a AH LSU(Advanced Hybrid QoS Routing Link State Update) Algorithm that improves the performance of Hybrid LSU(Hybrid QoS Link State State Update) Algorithm with statistical information of flow holding time in network. AH LSU algorithm has had both advantages of LSU message control in periodic QoS routing LSU algorithm and QoS routing performance in adaptive LSU algorithm. It has the mechanism that calculate LSU message transmission priority using the flow of statistical request bandwidth and available bandwidth and include MLMR(Meaningless LSU Message Removal) mechanism. MLMR mechanism can remove the meaningless LSU message generating repeatedly in short time. We have evaluated the performance of the MLMR mechanism, the proposed algorithm and the existing algorithms on MCI simulation network. We use the performance metric as the QoS routing blocking rate and the mean update rate per link, it thus appears that we have verified the performance of this algorithm.
To accommodate the increasing number of mobile terminals in the limited radio spectrum, wireless systems have been designed as micro/picocellular architectures for a higher capacity. This reduced coverage area of a cell has caused a higher rate of hand-off events, and the hand-off technology for efficient process becomes a necessity to provide a stable service. Population-based Bandwidth Reservation(PBR) Scheme is proposed to provide prioritized handling for hand-off calls by dynamically adjusting the amount of reserved bandwidth of a cell according to the amount of cellular traffic in its neighboring cells. We analyze the performance of the PBR scheme according to the changes of a fractional parameter, f, which is the ratio of request reservation to the total amount of bandwidth units required for hand-off calls that will occur for the next period. The vague of this parameter, f should be determined based on QoS(Quality of Service) requirement. To meet the requirement the value of Parameter(f) must be able to be adjusted dynamically according to the changing traffic conditions. The best value of f can be determined by a function of the average speed of mobile stations, average call duration, cell size, and so on. This paper considers the average call duration and the cell size according to the speed of mobile stations. Although some difference exists as per speed, in the range of 0.4 $\leq$ f $\leq$ 0.6, Blocking Probability, Dropping Probability and Utilization show the best values.

Video-on-demand system in which users can request any video through the network at any time is made possible by rapid increase in network bandwidth and capacity of the media server. However true video-on-demand system cannot support all requests since bandwidth requirement is still too demanding. Therefore efficient bandwidth reduction algorithm is necessary. both the piggybacking method and the batching method are novel solutions that can provide more logical number of streams than the physical system can support. Of course each of them has its pros and cons. hence piggybacking with batching-by-size can take advantage of both the schemes. Some parameters such as the size of batch and the size of the catch-up window should be adjusted and order to maximize the bandwidth reduction for piggybacking with batching-by-size method. One of the most important parameters is decided optimally in this paper. Simulation shows that the optimized parameter can achieve considerable reductionand consequently remarkable enhancement in performance.
Current policies for sharing bandwidth increase average throughput and improve utilization of the bandwidth in the local network. However, with these policies, a central administer, which is responsible for allocating bandwidth to each network flow, cannot allocate resources based on user characteristics. Thus, it leads to unfair bandwidth allocation because it does not guarantee services based on user characteristics. Therefore, we propose a novel negotiation method to share the bandwidth in a limited bandwidth network, in which, a user negotiates with other users to gain more resource. Ideally, we use a fuzzy system to infer and determine whether a device will request bandwidth or not based on the current usage of the given device. We conduct two experiments consisting of a video streaming simulation in OPNET and a real-time video streaming in WebRTC. The results of the experiment indicate that the proposed method can flexibly share the bandwidth utilization based on user's requirement in the network.
With the deployment of 5G infrastructure, content delivery network (CDN) will be a key role to provide explosive growing services for the independent media and YouTube which contain high-speed mobile contents. Without a local cache, the mobile backhaul and fronthaul should endure huge burden of bandwidth request for users as the increase number of direct accesses from contents providers. To deal with this issue, this paper fist presents both fronthaul solutions for CDN that use dark fibers and a passive optical network (PON). On top of that, we propose the aggregated content request specialized for PON caching and evaluate and compare its performance to legacy schemes through the simulation. The proposed PON caching scheme can reduce average access time of up to 0.5 seconds, 1/n received request packets, and save 60% of backhaul bandwidth compared to the no caching scheme. This work can be a useful reference for service providers and will be extended to further improve the hit ratio of cache in the future.
HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) is a technique that adapts its video quality to network conditions for providing Quality of Experience. In the HAS approach, a video content is encoded at multiple bitrates and the encoded video content is divided into several video segments. A HAS player estimates the network bandwidth and adjusts the video bitrate based on estimated bandwidth. However, the segment scheduler in the conventional HAS player requests video segments periodically without considering TCP. If the waiting duration for the next segment request is quite long, the TCP connection can be initialized and it restarts slow-start. Slow-start causes the reduction in TCP throughput and consequentially leads to low-quality video streaming. In this study, we propose a TCP-aware segment scheduling scheme to improve performance of HAS service. The proposed scheme adjusts request time for the next video request to prevent initialization of TCP connection and also considers the point of scheduling time. The simulation proves that our scheme improves the Quality of Service of the HAS service without buffer underflow issue.
