  • Analysis was carried out on the floor impact sound level between existing plan and enlarged plan with balcony remodeled. Because there is no standardized method to measure the floor impact sound for the apartment with balcony remodeled, two sets of sound source and receiver position were applied depending on whether it is enlarged or not. As a result, it is discovered that different positioning of sound source or receiver in the apartment with balcony remodeled could lead to different result.

  • The purpose of this study is to give some suggestions for the legal supplement of the regulation on the balcony expansion for the optimal use of apartment balcony. For the purpose, this study focused on the characteristics of spaces expanded to the balcony, in the plans supplied after the legalization of balcony expansion, comparing them by their location; the metropolitan area of Seoul Gyeonggi and the districts of the other areas. The 168 plans of apartments in the supplied by top 10 constructors in the metropolitan areas of Seoul and Gyeonggi, together with the 92 plans in the other smaller districts in 2006 to 2007 were analyzed with the tools of frequency and chi-square analysis. The result is as follows. (1) The region showed no difference in the plans of balcony; whereas the size, the position and access of the shelter explained some differences of balcony plan. (2) In wider plans, balconies were placed in all sides of plan-front, rear and side, and were remodeled to expand facing rooms. (3) The balcony expansion tended to increase the number of bays. (4) In almost cases, the living rooms were expanded to balcony. In smaller plans, the balconies were remodeled to supply supplementary kitchen space, splitting it from laundry. (5) The shelters were placed at the rear or side of plans, but the shelter facing room could be dangerous in case of fire. The balcony expansion, despite of legalization spirit to adopt diverse use of additional spaces for residents' needs, was only a tool for the space expansion. The amendment of the regulation is needed to accommodate these findings that the balconies should be identified by their function, that the front corridor-type balcony should be limited in length and magnitude, and that the shelter should be positioned with easy access.

A Study on the Energy Performance Evaluation of Window System with the Balcony Types of Apartments (공동주택 세대내 발코니 유형별 창호의 냉난방 에너지 성능분석 연구)

  • Apartment balcony has been indiscreetly remodeled since the government permitted remodeling on January 2006. But remodeled balcony has a few problems such as increase of heating energy, surface condensation and cold draft. The reason of thermal problem is mainly caused by the window system in a extended balcony. The purpose of this study is to analyze heating and cooling energy and propose the efficient window types for the extended balcony area of a apartment building. 4 types of window system which have fairly high U value in Korea are investigated as follows ; double clear glass, double low-e glass, triple clear glass and triple low-e glass. Comparing double clear 91ass with double low-e glass, triple clear glass and triple low-e glass, simulation results show that 10%, 7% and 15% saving of total primary energy can be expected.

Energy Consumption on Balcony Remodeling Type in an Apartment House (공동주택에서 발코니 확장형이 에너지소비에 미치는 영향)

  • The percentage of apartment houses in residential buildings has increased every year, and it result in higher energy consumption of residential buildings. After the house law could be amended to legalize the remodeling of the balcony, buyers and contractors prefer to choose the balcony remodeling type when they choose a house for installment sale. Many construction companies design an apartment house considering balcony remodeling. So, this paper compares the balcony remodeling type with the basic type(prior to remodeling balcony) by using the building energy rating system tool. The balcony remodeling type consumes heating energies more than the basic type, and is unable to receive high rating. If the balcony is remodeled, it is required to improve the performance of wall and window and reduce the area of remodeling balcony.

Development of Guidelines for Indoor Environment in Apartment Remodeling Projects (아파트 리모델링의 실내환경 계획지침 개발)

  • The final aim of this study was to propose guidelines for the indoor environment of apartment remodeling projects. The first task of this study was to understand the major elements and the actual condition of the remodeling for apartment unit by carrying out in-depth interviews on residents and specialists. The open-access interviews were conducted with interior designers who have a wide experience of apartment remodeling and residents who live in recently remodeled apartment units. The second task was to evaluate the actual condition of the indoor environment and to analyze the main factors that affect the indoor environment in remodeled apartment units. Field measurements were carried out in twenty apartment units occupied after remodeling, recording indoor environment elements (indoor temperature, globe temperature, relative humidity, $CO_2$, CO, PM10, TVOC, HCHO, illumination, and equivalent noise level). Moreover, resident interviews and researcher observations were carried out to determine the contents of the remodeled unit and to investigate the architectural and living factors(like ventilation characteristics, etc.) related to the indoor environment. The results are as follows. The remodeling elements generally included the changing of lighting fixtures and finishing materials in all the spaces, the integration of the balcony into the children's room, the installation of furniture in the kitchen and the entrance, the changing storage furnitures and equipments in the bathroom. The average levels of each unit of relative humidity, $CO_2$, TVOC, HCHO, equivalent noise level, and illumination were proved to be on the whole in inadequate condition. The factors that affect these indoor elements were classified as remodeling factors (remodeling amounts, extent balcony integration, and lighting fixture exchange), ventilation characteristics, and living factors. According to these results, this research proposed the guidelines for the indoor environment in apartment remodeling projects.

Energy Performance Evaluation of a Double-skin Facade with a Venetian Blind in Residential Buildings (주거건물용 이중외피 시스템의 블라인드 조절에 따른 에너지 성능평가에 관한 연구)

  • Apartment balcony has been remodeled since the government permitted remodeling in January 2006.But extended balcony has great impact on building heat gain and loss. Therefore It has problems such as increase of heating and cooling energy. So $\underline{t}echnical$ solutions about window solar gain in summer is an urgent matter. The Purpose of this study is to evaluate energy performance of a blind in a double-skin facade in residential buildings by using EnergyPlus program. The results show that slat angles of $90^{\circ}$ is best in energy performance if we do not consider daylight. Poorly daylighted living room needs electric light and it also causes high cooling load. On the other hand, the results show that the application of blinds controlled automatically is best for energy performance when we consider daylight. Blind slat angles of $50\sim60^{\circ}$ have best performance when blinds are controlled in this angle throughout the day on a clear day in August. Blind slat angles of $0\sim30^{\circ}$ have best performance when blinds $\underline{are\;controlled}$ in this angle throughout the day on a cloudy day (more than 7 of total sky cover) in August.

Elements and Actual Condition of Apartment Unit Remodeling - By In-depth Interviews on Residents and Specialists of Interior Design Companies - (아파트 단위주거의 리모델링 요소와 현황 - 인테리어디자인업체 실무자와 거주자 심층면접을 통하여 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to grasp major elements and actual condition of apartment unit remodeling by in-depth interviews on residents and specialists. The interviews had been conducted to interior designers who have a wide experience of apartment remodeling and residents who live in recently remodeled apartment unit. In-depth interview is a kind of qualitative method in which attention to reply of responses with open-access between interviewer and respondents. According to the results, remodeling elements were generally changing of lighting fixtures and finishing materials in the all spaces, integration of balcony into children's room, installation of furniture in kitchen and entrance, changing storage furnitures and equipments in bathroom. Artificial lighting method were selected generally whole lighting. Finishing materials were used ordinary (non environmentally-friendly) wallpaper and adhesion and tempered floor. There were unsatisfied factors after remodeling, these were dissatisfaction of design, construction defects, and stink of reflecting 'sick house'. Also they responded that they should be considering to use environmentally-friendly material at next remodeling.
