Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell density-dependent communication mechanism between bacteria through small signaling molecules. When the number of QS signaling molecules reaches a threshold, they are transported back into the cells or recognized by membrane-bound receptors, triggering gene expression which affects various phenotypes including bioluminescence, virulence, adhesion, and biofilm formation. These phenotypes are beneficial for bacterial survival in harsh environments. This review summarizes the application of QS inhibitors for control of biofilm formation and virulence expression of periodontal pathogens.

Quorum sensing, a gene expression in response to population density, is regulated by chemical signals, most of which are acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs). The AHL derivatives have been reported to regulate bioluminescence, virulence factors and / or swarming motility in bacteria. It is hypothesized that higher organisms may have evolved specific means to interfere with bacterial communication as exemplified in the AHL-antagonistic activity of halogenated furanones isolated from the Australian macroalga Delisea pulchra. Physiological changes of Escherichia coli during the fed-batch fermentation process were characterized in this study. Overall cellular protein samples prepared at the different stage of fermentation were separated by 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), and differently expressed 15 proteins, Phosphotransferase enzyme I, GroEL, Trigger factor, ${\beta}$ subunit of ATP synthase, Transcriptional regulator KDGR, Phosphoglycerate mutase 1, Inorganic pyrophosphatase, Serine Hydroxymethyl-transferase, ${\alpha}$ subunit of RNA polymerase, Elongation factor Tu, Elongation factor Ts, Tyrosine-tRNA ligase, DnaK suppressor protein, Transcriptional elongation factor, 30S ribosomal protein S6 were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). When bacterial cells grow to high cell density, and IPTG-inducible heterologous protein is produced, expression level of overall cellular proteins was decreased. According to their functions in the cell, identified proteins were classified into three groups, proteins involved in transport process, small-molecule metabolism, and synthesis and modification of macromolecules.

Serratia plymuthim A21-4 strongly inhibits the mycelial growth, zoospore formation, and cystospore germination of Phytophthor spp and Pythium species. The bacterial isolate produced antifungal substance and chitinase. The bacteria also enhanced to plant growth remarkably in low nutritional condition. The application of cell suspension of A21-4 to pepper seedlings in greenhouse experiments and soil drenching in farmer's field was proved successfully to control the phythophthora blight of pepper. For the effective control, however, relatively high density of cell number(10$\^$9/cfu/$m\ell$) is required. Density effect was similar in plant growth promoting activity of A21-4. Though this investigation we improved the problem with changes of culture condition of bacteria and some nutritional amendment.
The change in chemical compositions of leachate and medium density fiberboard (MDF) from a laboratory-scale simulated landfill which constructed in a plastic container containing alternating layers of soil and MDF was investigated to evaluate decomposing of MDF in soil. Four treatments were conducted: 1) MDF in soil, 2) MDF only, 3) cured UF resin in soil, and 4) soil only. Molecular weight (MW) distribution of compounds in leachate from soil only treatment did not change over time. In UF resin in soil treatment, the MW distribution shifted to a lower MW distribution over time, while the peak shifted to the left indicated changing to higher MW distribution in leachate from treatment 1 and 2 contained MDF. Higher percent nitrogen in leachate was observed in MDF containing treatments due to the UF resin in the MDF. The percent carbon slightly increased in MDF only while that greatly decreased in MDF in soil treatment maybe due to bacterial activity. The percent of extractable materials from the MDF decreased greatly on day 35 compare to day 0, and subsequently did not change much on day 77. In contrast, percent holocellulose and lignin did not change much over time. No structural change of the wood fiber in MDF occurs during the study. Water-soluble materials from MDF in soil contributed the change in chemical composition of leachate.
This study investigated environmental assessments of leachate containing formaldehyde from medium density fiberboard (MDF) disposed in laboratory-scale simulated landfills. Environmental impact assessment of leachate was conducted by measuring formaldehyde, toxicity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), bacterial enumeration, and pH. Amount of formaldehyde in leachate from MDF in soil decreased to the level of soil only treatment by 28 days, and toxicity decreased as the amount of formaldehyde decreased. BOD and COD levels in leachate from the treatments containing MDF exceeded permissible discharge levels of BOD or COD throughout the experimental period. The pH levels of all treatment were within permissible discharge range except on day 0. Fewer bacteria were observed in leachate from MDF in soil treatment than other treatments (MDF only, cured UF resin in soil, and soil only). Consequently, the leachate from disposal of MDF in soil detrimentally affect on environment. However, soil buffered formaldehyde leaching and pH on leachate in this study. Waste MDF may be required the pre-water soaking treatment for leaching formaldehyde to reclaim on land.

The potential factors for quality loss of cleaned fresh ginseng and technology to be associated with the improvement of marketability through pre-packaging fumigation were examined. Major microorganisms isolated from fresh ginseng included Botrytis cinerea, and Erwinia sp. Others such as Cylindrocarpon sp., Fusarium spp., Pennicilium spp., Bacillus spp. were also found at relatively low frequency. The bacterial density of vacuum packaged fresh ginseng rapidly increased during simulated marketing. Little correlation between bacterial growth and package swelling was found. In order to improve packaging method of fresh ginseng, pre-packaging treatment of 2-phenylethyl alcohol (PE, 100 uL/L, 4 hr) was examined. The fumigation treatment effectively inhibited the growth of bacteria density and also effective on keeping firmness of ginseng root, especially in cortical portion. The internal gas compositions of plastic container packaged for ginseng were approximately ranged between 6 to 8% $O_2$and 3 to 4% $CO_2$. The $O_2$ level of fumigation treatment was lower than control whereas $CO_2$ level was higher. The upsurge of ethylene evolution I day after simulated marketing was found only in fumigation treatment but it returned to ordinary level at day 2. The sucrose content of 2-PE treatment was significantly reduced at 5 days after simulated marketing but reducing sugars like glucose and fructose remained at higher level. The difference in sugar levels was reduced after 10 days of simulated marketing. The decay of fresh ginseng began at the lateral or fine root, which is weak to physical damage, in general. The epidermis was more damaged. Plastic container packaging with PE fumigation could be an alternative to vacuum packaging, which allows an aerobic environment and prevents anaerobic respiration. Further study of pre-package fumigation is required to improve technology of fresh ginseng marketing.
Viable potential of Mycobacterium smegmatis, a slow grower in vitro cultivation and of M. leprae, an obligate intracellular parasitic bacterium, which can not be cultured yet in vitro was assessed by fluorospectrophotometry. Bacterial cells in different numbers and under various physiological status were incubater with fluorescein diacetate(FDA). After an incubation of the bacterial preparations with FDA at specified conditions, amount of fluorescein inside bacteria was measured by a fluorospectrophotometer at 470nm and 510nm of excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively. Fluorounit given by such bacteria showed a correlation with assessment of viability of the same preparations made by other methods, such as optical density and colony forming units of M. smegmatis and intracellular ATP content of M. leprae. The possible use of fluorospectrophotometry in assessing viability or physiological potential of bacteria, particularly intracellular parasites and fastidious organisms to culture in vitro is discussed in relation to other methods.
The ultrastructural characteristics of epidermis isolated from healthy and rusty ginseng roots(Panax ginseng) were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the distribution profiles of inorganic elements were also examined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The epidermis of rusty ginseng was thick and cell walls were also severely disrupted whereas the epidermal image of healthy ginseng showed relatively thin, clear and rectangular structure. A high amount of rod-shaped bacteria was found in rusty ginseng and cells near bacteria were degraded. The bacterial density in epidermis of rusty ginseng was ranged from 2.9$\times$10$^{6}$ to 3.5 $\times$ 10$^{7}$ CFU/g fresh weight, while that of healthy ones was from 4.7$\times$10$^2$ to 1.2$\times$10$^3$CFU/g. Artificial inoculation of bacteria isolated from rusty ginseng induced similar symptom like rusty ginseng. The mineral contents inculding Al, Si and Fe were Higher in the epidermis of rusty ginseng, but K content was lower compared to healthy ones.

Bacterial chemotaxis is essential to the study of structure and function of bacteria. Although many studies have accumulated the knowledge about chemotaxis in the past, the motion of a single bacterium has not been studied much yet. In this study, we have developed a device microfabricated by soft lithography and consisting of microfluidic channels. The microfluidic assay generates a concentration gradient of chemoattractant linearly in the main channel by only diffusion of the chemicals. Bacteria are injected into the main channel in a single row by hydrodynamic focusing technique. We measured the velocity of bacteria in response to a given concentration gradient of chemoattractant using the microfludic assay, optical systems with CCD camera and simple PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) algorithm. The advantage of this assay and experiment is to measure the velocity of a single bacterium and to quantify the degree of chemotaxis by statistically analyzing the velocity at the same time. Specifically, we measured and analyzed the motility of Escherichia coli strain RP437 in response to various concentration gradients of L-aspartate statistically and quantitatively by using this microfluidic assay. We obtained the probability density of the velocity while RP437 cells are swimming and tumbling in the presence of the linear concentration gradient of L-aspartate, and quantified the degree of chemotaxis by analyzing the probability density.
