  • Active magnetic bearings(AMBs) present a technology which has many advantages compared to traditional bearing concepts. However, they require backup bearings in order to prevent damages in the event of a system failure. In this study, the dynamics of an AMB supported rotor during impact on backup bearings is studied employing a detailed simulation model. The backup bearings are modeled using an accurate ball bearing model, and the model for a flexible rotor system is described using the finite element approach with the component mode synthesis. Not only the influence of the support stiffness, clearance and friction coefficient on the rotor orbit, but also bearing load are compared for various rotor system parameters. Comparing these results it is shown that the optimum backup bearing system can be applicable for a specific rotor system.

  • In many cases, the magnetic farce model is linearized at the origin in designing the controller of a magnetic bearing system. However. this linear assumption is violated by the unmodeled nonlinear effect such as sensor dislocation and backup bearing dislocation. Therefore, a direct probe into the nonlinear magnetic force model in an active magnetic bearing system is necessary. To analyze the nonlinear magnetic force model of a magnetic bearing system, phase plot analysis which is to plot the numerical solution of the nonlinear equation in several initial points in the interested region is applied. Phase plot analysis is used to observe a nonlinear dynamic system qualitatively (not quantitatively). With this method, we can get much useful information of the nonlinear system. Among this information, a bifurcation graph that represents stability and locations of fixed points is essential. From the bifurcation graph, a stability criterion of magnetic bearing system is derived.

  • This paper presents a design and performance of the 6 D.O.F linear motion table with a magnetic bearing suspension. The linear positioning of the table with a 150mm stroke is driven by a brushless DC Linear motor and the other attitudes of the stage are controlled by the analog PD controller with magnetic bearing actuators. Each magnetic bearing unit which consists of 3 electromagnets, 3 capacitance probes and 3 backup bearings affords controlled forces by detecting the air gap between the probes and guideways. An integral type capacitance probe amplifier is equipped on the upper plate of the table so that the probe line to the probe amplifier can be shorter therefore the problems due to the stray capacitance and noise can be reduced. Form the pitch-yaw errormeasured by the autocollimator, the vertical and horizont straightness errors of the table are derived that they are maintained below 1.mu. m over 100mm stroke. The positioning accuracy of the linear motion is maintained below 2 .mu. m and the repeatability error is below 1 .mu. m

  • Chatter vibration of a rolling machine in steel plants has a significant effect on thickness quality of the products. The cause and mechanism of the mill chattering is addressed through measurement of vibration and dynamic torque. An FFT system and an FM telemetry system are employed to collect data at several locations of possible damages. The results reveal the followings as sources of the mill vibration. The first is defects in roller bearings of a work roll chock. The second is instability of an oil film bearing in a backup roll chock, which has been investigated with a theoretical model describing the phenomenon. Dynamic torque is not the direct cause of mill vibration but rather influenced by the vibration. Appropriate treatment methods are suggested to address each of the above sources.

  • Recently, several attempts have been made to apply high Tc superconductor bearings of thrust type to flywheel energy storage system (FESS) throughout the world. Radial type superconductor bearings, however, have never been tried to the real FESS. KEPRI has developed its own radial type bearings and is now currently applying them to a FESS designed by KIMM, for the first time. In this paper preliminary test results of bearing performance and dynamic behavior of the flywheel rotor system mounted on them are presented. The dynamic properties, i.e, stiffness and damping, of the superconductor bearings were experimentally estimated using the static loading test as well as the impact test. The test revealed that stiffness value of the present superconductor bearings is about 67,700N/m and the damping value 29Ns/m. It was also found out that these bearings have some levitation drift problems due to excessive vibrations encountered while passing through the critical speeds. With recommend backup bearings to limit the vibration amplitudes of the rotor it is predicted that the flywheel rotor will show stable operations in the design speed range.
