Development of Direct Surface Forming Process

  • The backlight unit(BLU) is used as a light source of TFT liquid-crystalline-display (TFT-LCD) module. In this backlight unit, one of important components is the light guide, which is usually made of transparent polymers. Currently the screen-printing method is mainly used for the light guide as a manufacturing process. However, it has limitation to the flexibility of three-dimensional optical design. In the present paper a new alternative manufacturing method for the light guide with low-cost is proposed. This manufacturing method is named as direct surface forming (DSF), which is very similar to the well-known hot embossing except for partial contact between mold and substrate. The results of this new manufacturing method are presented in terms of processing condition, dimensional accuracy, productivity, etc.

  • In recent, LCD becomes one of the main display devices and expected to have quite good market share during the next couple of years. The demand for low cost and high performance, however, is becoming severe as the competition among other display devices like PDP, OLED increases. To satisfy this demand from market, we need to optimize the parts or modules of the LCD, reduce the number of the assemble and enhance the process for the high brightness and uniformity of the LCD. The LCD consists mainly of LCD panel and Backlight unit(BLU). BLU, which takes big portion of the cost for LCD, consists of light source, light guide panel and many kinds of functional film. Recently light guide panel or film for BLU has micro patterns on its surface and consequently to reduce the number of parts and enhace the brightness and its uniformity. In this study, some methodologies for the fabrication of the master/stamper and molding the light quide panel are introduced for 50um pitch of prizm patterned substrate. Mechanical machining process is adapted and optimized to fabricate micro patterned stamper using the micro cutting tool. Injection molding technology is also developed to obtain uniformly replicated micro patterned products.

LED와 아크릴을 이용한 광고용 BLU 시스템 구현 (Implementation of a BLU system for advertisements using a LED and Acryl)

  • 본 논문은 LED와 아크릴을 이용한 새로운 BLU을 제안하고 그 가능성을 실험적으로 검증했으며, 특히 LED에 의한 아크릴의 빛 산란 및 가이딩에 관한 연구에 초점을 맞췄다. 기존 형광 램프를 이용한 BLU는 현재 많이 개발되어 있는 상황이나, 이러한 BLU 제품은 구입 가격이 높고 수명이 짧으며, 벽에 부착할 경우 두꺼워 부착하기가 쉽지 않다. 또한, 실외에서 사용하기 위해서는 외부의 환경으로부터 보호될 수 있는 별도의 패키징이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 저렴한 비용으로 옥외 간판의 BLU로 활용될 수 있는 새로운 BLU 시스템을 제안하고 검증한다. 장치의 구성은 매우 저렴하게 구입할 수 있는 아크릴과 LED로 이루어지며, 빛의 산란 효과를 이용하기 위하여 아크릴 표면에 다양한 스크래치를 시도하였다. 또한, 인터넷을 통하여 BLU의 색상, 조도를 다이나믹하게 원격 조정할 수 있도록 임베디드 시스템을 구현 하였다. 모의실험의 결과를 바탕으로 간판용 BLU를 실제 구현하였고, 모의실험의 경우 2,673Lux, 실제 제작한 광고용 BLU는 2,554Lux의 평균 밝기가 측정되었다. 모의실험 결과와 실제 제작된 BLU의 실험 결과가 유사하게 나타남을 확인 할 수 있었다.

미세 광학패턴기술을 이용한 Flexible Backlight에 관한 연구 (Investigation of flexible backlight using micro-scale optical function pattern design)

  • 최근 휴대용 정보전자기기의 비약적인 사용의 증가는 충격에 보다 강한 디스플레이에 대한 연구를 발전시키는 계기가 되었다. 일부 제조회사에서 AMOLED를 사용한 디스플레이에서 유연한 특성을 가진 제품을 선보이고 있으나, 그 사용량에 있어서 압도적으로 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 것은 LCD 이다. 특히 LCD는 구조적인 문제로 인하여 반드시 후면광원을 사용하여야 하는데, 면발광형식의 조광장치를 얇은 두께로 구현하는데 사용되는 것이 아크릴 재질의 도광판이다. 본 연구에서는 유연하지 않은 메틸메타아크릴레이트에 부틸 아크릴레이트 고무계열의 합성재료를 첨가하여 유연성을 유지하고, 투과율을 90%까지 상승시킨 KURARITY 라는 재질을 사용한 패턴의 설계 및 성형 결과를 통해서 유연한 후면광원의 가능성을 평가하는데 주력하였다. 평가 결과 기존의 광원과 동일한 수준의 밝기 및 휘도 균일도를 얻을 수 있었다.

시변 변환 행렬을 이용한 시간에 안정된 RGB LED Backlighting 구동 전류 제어 (Driving Current Control for Time-Stable RGB LED Backlighting Using Time-Varying Transform Matrix)

  • 본 논문에서는 red, green, blue(RGB) 광학 센서를 이용하여 RGB light-emitting diode(LED) back light unit(BLU)의 출력색 자극의 변화를 점검하여 RGB LED BLU가 시간에 따라 일정한 목표 색 자극을 출력할 수 있도록 하는 RGB LED BLU 구동 전류 펄스 duty 값을 도출하는 알고리즘을 제안한다. 우선, 현재 RGB LED BLU가 발하는 색 자극 정보를 획득하기 위해 RGB 광학 센서의 출력으로부터 CIEXYZ 색 자극을 계산할 수 있는 RGB to XYZ 변환 행렬을 도출한다. 다양한 RGB LED BLU 색 자극 샘플에 대한 RGB 광학 센서의 출력 값과 CIEXYZ 색 자극 값의 쌍을 이용하여 다항 회귀 방정식을 만들고 각 항의 계수로 행렬을 구성한다. 다음으로, 현재 RGB LED BLU 상태에서 목표 색 자극 값을 발할 수 있는 duty 값을 구하기 위해 목표 색 자극으로부터 duty 값을 계산할 수 있는 XYZ to Duty 변환 행렬을 도출한다. 현재, 한 단계 이전, 두 단계 이전 시점에서 RGB 광학 센서의 출력으로부터 추정한 CIEXYZ 값과 그때 인가된 duty 값의 쌍을 이용하여 다항 회귀 방정식을 만들고 각 항의 계수로 행렬을 구성한다. 일정 시간 간격으로 RGB LED BLU의 출력 색 자극을 점검할 때마다 XYZ to Duty 변환 행렬은 RGB LED BLU의 현재 상태에 적응적으로 변하게 되어 목표 색 자극을 출력할 수 있는 duty 값을 계산할 수 있게 된다.

Xe EEFL의 혼합가스에 따른 전기 광학적 특성 (Electrical and Optical properties of Xe EEFL by mixed gas)

  • TFT-LCD used in display area is not a light-emissive device itself but TFT-LCD can overcome through the employ of the backlight unit (BLU). BLU is very important device in TFT-LCD system. However, the old-fashion BLU of CCFL type is crucible to the health due to the contained material, mercury (Hg). Moreover, strong temperature dependency of lamp employed with Hg becomes the other disadvantage in practical usage. To solve these problems, Hg-Free lamp with strong thermal resistance property is required to displace the Hg lamp. We studied optical and electrical properties of Xe-Ne-He mixed gas that is dependent on change of mixed ratio and pressure. In our results, the designed lamp without the phosphorescent material has the lowest firing voltage at xe 50%(Ne:He=9:1).

  • The technology trend of Flat Panel Display (FPD) equipments have been demanded that there are compact and multi-function. Therefore, nano/micro scale patterned on polymeric materials of Back Light Unit (BLU) in Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that has been investigated. This paper describes a series of Horizontal Type Micro Tensile Tester that were carried out to investigate the load strain distance performance of typical polymeric material sheets. The polymeric materials film that micro size shaped specimens for tensile test are used by Cold-Isostatic-Press (CIP). Test equipment is Horizontal type Micro Tensile Tester that is presented to measure the micro scale mechanical property of thin film for FPD. This paper presents which easy testing tools measure for micro patterned on polyethylene (PET) specimens.

TFT-LCD용 휘도 성능을 향상시키는 나노 와이어 그리드 편광 필름의 제작 (Fabrication of a Nano-Wire Grid Polarizer for Brightness Enhancement in TFT-LCD Display)

  • TFT-LCD consists of LCD panel on the top, circuit unit on the side and BLU on the bottom. The recent development issues of BLU-dependent TFT-LCD have been power consumption minimization, slimmerization and size maximization. As a result of this trend, LED is adopted as BLU instead of CCFL to increase brightness and to reduce thickness. In liquid crystal displays, the light efficiency is below 10% due to the loss of light in the path from a light source to an LCD panel and presence of absorptive polarizer. This low efficiency results in low brightness and high power consumption. One way to circumvent this situation is to use a reflective polarizer between backlight units and LCD panels. Since a nano-wire grid polarizer has been known as a reflective polarizer, an idea was proposed that it can be used for the enhancement of the brightness of LCD. The use of reflective polarizing film is increasing as edge type LED TV and 3D TV markets are growing. This study has been carried out to fabrication of the nano-wire grid polarizer(NWGP) and investigated the brightness enhancement of LCD through polarization recycling by placing a NWGP between an c and a backlight unit. NWGPs with a pitch of 200nm were fabricated using laser interference lithography and aluminum sputtering and wet etching. And The NWGP fabrication process was using by the UV imprinting and was applied to plastic PET film. In this case, the brightness of an LCD with NWGPs was 1.21 times higher than that without NWGPs due to polarization recycling.

Correlation Between the Optical Performance of the Reflective Polarizer and the Structure of LCD Backlight

  • The optical performance of the reflective polarizer was investigated over three kinds of direct-lit backlights and/or different configurations of the optical sheets. The optical gain factor achieved by using the reflective polarizer increased as the diffuse nature of the optical sheet was enhanced, because of the more efficient polarization conversion. In addition, the gain factor decreased substantially in flat-lamp backlights compared to tubular-lamp backlights, which was ascribed to the high loss factor during the polarization recycling process due to the complex structure and large area of flat lamps. All these results suggested that reducing the loss factor of the backlight is very important for efficient polarization conversion and thus high optical gain of the reflective polarizer.

Light Output Characteristics of Rounded Prism Films in the Backlight Unit for Liquid Crystal Display

  • The optical performances of rounded prism films were investigated using a ray tracing technique. The angular distribution of the luminous intensity was obtained as functions of the prism pitch and the curvature of rounded apex and valley of prism arrays. The gain of the on-axis luminance decreased with decreasing curvature (increasing diameter) and pitch. The existence of the curved area on the prism film decreased the recycling efficiency of the prism film, i.e., the rays which would otherwise have been recycled through total internal reflections via the prism surfaces were refracted on the curved regions and redirected toward directions other than the on-axis direction. Quantitative correlation between the luminance gain and the curvature in addition to the prism pitch was obtained, which might serve as basic data for the optimization of prism films and the manufacturing processes.
