Suppose one is given a vector X of a finite set of quantities $X_i$ which are independent Poisson random variables. A null hypothesis $H_0$ about E(X) is to be tested against an alternative hypothesis $H_1$. A quantity $\sum\limits_{i}w_ix_i$ is to be computed and used for the test. The optimal values of $W_i$ are calculated for three cases: (1) signal to noise ratio is used in the test, (2) normal approximations with unequal variances to the Poisson distributions are used in the test, and (3) the Poisson distribution itself is used. The above three cases are considered to the situations that are without background noise and with background noise. A comparison is made of the optimal values of $W_i$ in the three cases for both situations.

The design of filters for pattern recognition that have optimal trade-off for the criteria of noise robustness, peak sharpness and Homer efficiency, when input scene noise is spatially disjoint (nonoverlapping) with the target, are presented Three different criteria, ie, signal-to-noise ratio, peak-to-output energy ratio and light efficiency are used to design the filter. Computer simulation is made for the various types of noise and parameters to illustrate filter performance for optical pattern recognition. When we compare the new trade-off filter with the original optimal trade-off filter, the performance of trade-off filter for nonoverlapping background is better than that of trade-off filter for overlapping background.

Combination of mental stress task with noise background is a traditional tool employed in psychophysiology. However, intensity of background noise is a factor affecting both performance on test and psychophysiological responses associated with stress evoked by mental load in noisy environment. In the current study on 7 subjects we analyzed the influence of white noise (WN) intensity (55, 70, and 85 dB[A] ) on psychophysiological responses during word recognition test performed on noise background. There were recorded following physiological variables: electrodermal activity (EDA) , namely, skin conductance level (SCL), skin conductance response (SCR) amplitude (SCR-A), rise time and total number of SCRs (N-SCR); cardiovascular activity, e.g., heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) index, pulse transit time (PTT), finger pulse volume (PV), skin temperature (SKT) and respiratory activity, such as respiration rate (RESP-R) and inspiration wane amplitude (RESP-A) during baseline resting state and 40 s long performance on 3 similar Korean word recognition tests with different WN intensity (55, 70, and 85 dB). Electrodermal responses (SCR-A, SCL, N-SCR) demonstrated gradual increment with increased intensity of noise, and this increase of response magnitude with higher intensity of noise was typical also for r skin temperature (phasic SKT decrease) and pulse volume (phasic and tonic PV decrease). However, some cardiovascular and respiratory responses did not exhibit same tendency of gradual increase of reactivity , namely HR, as well as RESP-R and RESP-A showed decrement of response magnitudes. Important finding in terms of cardiovascular reactivity was that 55 and 70dB evoked similar profiles, while 85dB WN resulted in significantly different profile of reactions, suggesting that there exists a threshold level after which intensive auditory stimulation elicits psychophyslological responses pattern of different quality. There are discussed potential autonomic mechanism involved in mediation of observed physiological responses.
This study compared and analysed ground vibration, size of underwater background noise in fish farms and underwater object noise of blasting and obtained ground vibration prediction equation through a regression analysis and correlation equation between underwater object noises in order to predict degrees of underwater noise in blasting and organize underwater noise control regulations. Before the study, when background noise of fish and shellfish farms with different conditions was measured, levels of background noise were different according to environmental characteristics of each farm. Ground vibration which causes underwater noise was measured to obtain a correlation equation between ground vibration and underwater object noise. Therefore, if underwater noise is predicted for each construction with a use of a correlation and permissible standards appropriate for each condition are applied for design and construction, financial loss from damages to fish and shellfish caused by development of insufficient technological and engineering logic can be prevented and successful construction with safety of underwater creatures guaranteed can be achieved.

A new approach to impulsive noise rejection and background normalization of digitized electrocardiogram signals is presented using mathematical morphological operators that incoporate the shape information of a signal. A brief introduction to these nonlinear signal processing operators, as well as detailed description of the new algorithm, is presented. Empirical results show that the new algorithm has good performance in impulsive noise rejection and background normalization.

Using the existing algorithms that estimate the background noise, the detection probability for the week tonals is low and for the even week tonals, there is a limit not detected. Therefore it is required to algorithms which can improve the performance of the tonal extraction. Recently, many researches using artificial neural networks in sonar signal processing are performed. We propose a neural network with double feedback that can remove automatically the background noise and detect the even week tonals buried in background noise, therefore not detected by growing the week tonals lastingly for a certain time. For the real underwater target, experiments for the tonal extraction are performed by using the existing algorithms that estimate the background noise and the proposed neural network. As a result of the experiment, a method using the proposed neural network showed the better performance of the tonal extraction in comparison with the existing algorithms.

It is common for archive libraries to provide public access to historical and ancient document image collections. It is common for such document images to require specialized processing in order to remove background noise and become more legible. Document images may be contaminated with noise during transmission, scanning or conversion to digital form. We can categorize noises by identifying their features and can search for similar patterns in a document image to choose appropriate methods for their removal. In this paper, we propose a hybrid binarization approach for improving the quality of old documents using a combination of global and local thresholding. This article also reviews noises that might appear in scanned document images and discusses some noise removal methods.

A pre-processing system for adaptive noise removal is proposed based on the principle of identifying and filtering object regions and background regions. Human perception of images depends on bright, well-focused object regions; these regions can be treated with the best filters, while simpler filters can be applied to other regions to reduce overall computational complexity. In the proposed method, bright region segmentation is performed, followed by segmentation of object and background regions. Noise in dark, background, and object regions is then removed by the median, fast bilateral, and bilateral filters, respectively. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm is much faster than and performs nearly as well as the bilateral filter (which is considered a powerful noise removal algorithm); it reduces computation time by 19.4 % while reducing PSNR by only 1.57 % relative to bilateral filtering. Thus, the proposed algorithm remarkably reduces computation while maintaining accuracy.

The noise characteristics of the submarines and vessels are composed of tonal signals and background noises. Tonal signals are from the revolution of the motors or engines, and background noises are from the generation and disappearing of the bubbles around the vessels. We analyze the noises from maneuvering underwater vessels with ATW algorithm. We design broadband asymptotic noise generator using Hilbert transform and design the system which can generate asymptotic noise with sum of generated background noise and synthesized tonal signals. This system can be used as a cheating system from the torpedo shacks.
We examined the effect of Siemens ADMIRE (Advanced Modeled Iterative Reconstruction) on image quality by measuring changes in HU, noise, and SNR of background air, fat, muscle, and background signals on a chest CT scan. Experimental results show that as the ADMIRE Strength increases, the noise decreases and the signal increases, consequently the signal-to-noise ratio increases. ADMIRE can reduce noise by 28 ~ 61% compared to FBP, which is a conventional image reconstruction algorithm, and improves SNR by 16 ~ 100%.
