  • In this paper, the purpose is to investigate the stability of cracked cantilever T-beams subjected to axial force. In addition, an analysis of the natural frequency of a cracked beams as crack position, crack depth and tip mass is investigated. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion is derived by the energy expressions using extended Hamilton's Principle. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The results of this study will contribute to the safety test and stability estimation of structures of a cracked T-beams subjected to axial force.

  • In this study, the dynamic analysis of a beam is analyzed by using the finite element method when the beam has moving mass and axial load. To consider the contact force between the moving mass and beam, coupled nonlinear equations of contact dynamics are derived, and then the weak form for the finite element method is established. The finite element computer programs based on the Lagrange multiplier method are developed to compute the contact force. Furthermore, a variety of simulations are performed for various design parameters such as moving mass velocity, compressive axial load and tension load. Finally, relations between the dynamic response and contact force are also discussed.

  • The effects of weight and axial inertia of a beam are taken into account for studying the nonlinear vibration of the Timoshenko beam due to external loads. The combination of Galerkins method and Runge-Kutta method are employed to obtain the dynamic responses of the beam. A concentrated force and a two-axle vehicle traversing on the beam are taken as two examples to investigate the response characteristics of the beam. Results show that the effect of axial inertia of the beam increases the fundamental period of the beam. Further, both the dynamic deflection and the dynamic moment of the beam obtained with including the effect of axial inertia of the beam are greater than those of the beam without including that effect of the beam.

  • An axial fan design code, called iDesignFan$^{TM}$, was developed. In this code, three major loss models were used to predicted the aerodynamic performance of a fan. The overall sound pressure level, predicted from steady blade loading, is also used as an input parameter from the third loop of the designing process to acquire most silent fan for the given aerodynamic performance parameters. With this kind of inverse design concept used in this code, the period of designing a fan, which has given aerodynamic performance with minimal acoustic noise, is significantly shortened. The experimental results of a prototype fan, designed by this code, showed that aerodynamic and acoustic performance of an axial fan is reasonably well predicted. Thus, one can design/develop an axial fan in a short time by using the code.e.

  • In this work we use the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor. The mode decomposition technique is also used to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize axial defects. The arrival times of the separated modes are calculated and the axial defect lengths can be evaluated by using the estimated arrival time. Results from an experiment on a carbon steel pipe are presented and it is shown that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • The theory for a new electromagnetically biased combined radial and axial magnetic bearing is developed. This combined magnetic bearing uses two axial coils to provide the bias flux to the radial and axial air gaps of the combined bearing. One dimensional magnetic circuit model for this combined magnetic bearing is developed and analyzed such that flux densities and magnetic forces can be obtained. Three dimensional finite element model for the bearing is also developed and analyzed. Numerical analysis shows that the calculated magnetic forces from 1D model are well matched with those from the finite element model.

  • In this paper, a successful noise reduction of an axial flow fan for a refrigerator is presented. The vortex sheet generated at the blade tip of fan was suppressed by changing the shape of the tip. The structure of vortex sheet and detailed flow pattern around the fan were studied by two-dimensional LDV(Laser-Doppler Velocimetry). Effective ways to work out the result as mentioned above are to make the tip of the blade varied in thickness and to have elliptical shapes. To seek the optimal value fur the shape of new fan, several cases were examined. Through the application of the methods, the refrigerator became less noisy by 3.8 dB(A) in terms of air-borne noise produced only by the axial flow fan compared to the current one.

  • To meet the needs of the hydraulic excavator of large capacity, tandem axial type piston pump which is high pressure and high speed have been developed. But inevitably we can not help facing the problem of noise at that time. In order to reduce the noise of this pump, many researchers have been studying the problem of oil distribution manner. But they are not interested in the symmetric structure of tandem type pump. So, focusing on the symmetric structure of tandem type pump, this paper analyzed unbalanced force developed in the pump chamber and verified the effect of the pumping phase of the piston on vibration and noise of the tandem axial type piston pump theoretically.

  • This paper presents the rocket motor support structure to position solid rocket engine within a missile fuselage. When the rocket motor is mounted inside a missile fuselage, fuselage structure must be designed to withstand various structural problems resulting from inserted rocket motor such as axial thrust force, shock/vibration, axial deformation of the rocket motor tank in addition to the flight loads. The motor support structure system proposed in this paper proved to be very simple and efficient while satisfying all the design requirements.

  • Although the MEMS element is made through a very precise manufacturing process, usually there is the difference between the modeling design and the actual product. So tuning is required. Through the frequency tuning(changing the characteristics of device), we can calibrate the fabrication error and uncertainty. I'll propose the method of changing the natural frequency through the imposing the axial force on the anchor part to separate the sensing part and the tuning part. When the shape of section is the form of rectangular, the degree of the natural frequencies' change under axial force appears D be different. Applying a tuning force of 30 $\mu$N, the natural frequencies' difference can be reduced by 5 percent.
