This work concerns with a comparison of the 1-dimensional (or 1-D) load follow analysis method with reference to the detailed 3-dimensional (or 3-D) computations. For this purpose a 1-D two-group finite difference code, HLOFO, and a 3-D coarse-mesh code based on the modified Borresen's method, CMSNAC, are developed. The CMSNAC code is used to obtain the 3-D power peaks and reactivity parameters in response to power swing from 100 to 50 and back to 100% in the 12-3-6-3 load cycle for the BOL of the KORI Unit 1 PWR core. The 3-D result is then compared with the 1-D HLOFO computations, the cross section and buckling inputs of which are obtained by combining the flux-volume weighting scheme with the approximate flux from the auxiliary 3-D computations. It is shown that the 1-D computation has a limited accuracy, yet it is confirmed that it can describe the core axial average behavior which is fairly consistent with the detailed 3-D computation.
The autofocus is one of the important processes in the automated vision inspection or measurements using optical microscopes, because it influences the measuring accuracy. In this paper, we used the confocal microscope configuration based on not a pinhole but a single-mode optical fiber. A single mode fiber has the functions of source and detector by applying the reciprocal scheme. As a result, we acquired a simple system configuration and easy alignment of the optical axis. Also, we embodied a fast autofocus system by acquiring the focus error signal through a source modulation technique. The source modulation technique can effectively reduce physical disturbances compared with objective lens modulation, and it is easily applicable to general optical microscopes. The focus error signal was measured with respect to the modulation amplitude, reflectance of the specimen and inclination angle of the measuring surface. The performance of the proposed autofocus system was verified through autofocusing flat mirror surface. In addition, we confirmed that source modulation rarely degrades the depth resolution by the comparison between the FWHMs of axial response curves.
In this study, the seismic performance of the connections between L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) and H-beams used in high-rise steel frame structures was investigated. Seven full-scale specimens were tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. The variables studied in the tests included the joint type, the axial compression ratio, the presence of concrete, the width-to-thickness ratio and the internal extension length of the side plates. The hysteretic response, strength degradation, stiffness degradation, ductility, plastic rotation capacity, energy dissipation capacity and the strain distribution were evaluated at different load cycles. The test results indicated that both the corner and exterior joint specimens failed due to local buckling and crack within the beam flange adjacent to the end of the side plates. However, the failure modes of the interior joint specimens primarily included local buckling and crack at the end plates and curved corners of the beam flange. A design method was proposed for the flexural capacity of the end plate connection in the interior joint. Good agreement was observed between the theoretical and test results of both the yield and ultimate flexural capacity of the end plate connection.
Objective : The cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) pulsates within the craniospinal axis in response to rhythmic cerebral blood volume variation during the cardiac cycle. The aim of this study is to characterize the normal and abnormal CSF flow and its waveforms in the cervical spinal subarachnoid space. Methods : The magnetic resonance(MR) images were obtained with 1.5 T(GE Signa, GE Medical Systems, Milwaukee, USA) unit using the 2 dimensional cine PC(phase contrast) sequence with cardiac gating and gradient recalled echo imaging. This pulse sequence yielded 16 quantitative flow-encoded images per cardiac cycle. Sagittal and axial images of the cervical spinal CSF space were obtained, and target sites were analyzed for characteristic CSF flow (TR=50ms, TE=12.5-15ms). The region of interest(ROI) was 1mm 3 in volume. Twenty six persons were included in this study : 10 healthy volunteers and 16 patients with cervical myelopathy. The post-operative cine MR study were also done in five patients. Results : The normal CSF pulsation dynamics in the cervical spine showed discrete systolic and diastolic components. The CSF flow revealed a sine wave pattern, in which the systolic phase was shorter than the diastolic phase(ratio=2 : 3). The patient group revealed decreased amplitudes of the CSF flow and irregularly distored flow waves. The systolic phase was elongated in the ROI above the stenotic level, whereas the diastolic phase was lengthened below the level. In the postoperative images, the abnormal pattern and amplitude were found to be corrected. Conclusion : From these results, the authors believe that the CSF flow study provides valuable informations regarding the extent of cervical stenosis and may be useful for the surgical planning and post-operative evaluation.
Purpose: The practical design for experiments with mixtures of q components is consisted in the four types of design points, vertex, center of edge, axial, and center points in a (q-1)-dimensional simplex space. We propose a sequential method for the successful construction of the design space in Quality by Design (QbD) by allowing the different number of replicates at the four types of design points in the practical design when the quadratic canonical polynomial model is assumed. Methods: To compare the mixture designs efficiency, fraction of design space (FDS) plot is used. We search for the practical mixture designs whose the minimal half-width of the tolerance interval per a standard deviation, which is denoted as d2, is less than 4.5 at 0.8 fraction of the design space. They are found by adding the different number of replicates at the four types of the design points in the practical design. Results: The practical efficient mixture designs for the number of components between three and five are listed. The sequential method to establish a design space is illustrated with the two examples based on the simulated data. Conclusion: The designs with the center of edge points replications are more efficient than those with the vertex points replication. We propose the sample size of at least 23 for three components, 28 for four components, and 33 for the five components based on the list of efficient mixture designs.
This paper describes a new test rig for identification of rotordynamic force coefficients of squeeze film dampers (SFDs) in automotive turbochargers (TCs). Prior studies have mainly concentrated on relatively large-sized SFDs used in aircraft engines, turbocompressors, and turbopumps. The main objective of the current study is to propose a test rig for identification of dynamic force coefficients of small-sized SFDs (a journal diameter of ~11 mm). The current test rig consists of a journal, a SFD cartridge, four support rods, an upper structure, a data acquisition (DAQ) system, and an oil circulation unit. The annular gaps between the journal outer surface and SFD cartridge inner surface create SFD film lands. The damper has two parallel film lands separated by a central groove, having an axial length and depth of 3 mm. Each film land has a length of 4 mm with a $40{\mu}m$ radial clearance. The static load and dynamic impact tests identify the structural characteristics (i.e., stiffness and natural frequency) of the journal and assembled test rig. The measurements show good agreement with predictions. The SFD performance data from this test rig will be used to develop innovative TC rotor systems with improved NVH and reliability characteristics incorporating advanced SFD technology.

The objective of this research is to investigate the seismic performance and flexure-shear behavior of square reinforced concrete bridge piers with solid and hollow cross section. Test specimens were nonseismically designed with the aspect ratio 4.5 Two reinforced concrete columns were tested under constant axial load while subjected to lateral load reversals with increasing drift levels. Longitudinal steel ratio was 2.217 percent. The transverse reinforcement ratio As/($s{\cdot}h$), corresponding to 58 percent of the minimum lateral reinforcement required by Korean Bridge Design Specifications for seismic detailing, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by limited ductility concept. This study are to provide quantitative reference data for the limited ductility design concept and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, collapse, etc. Failure behavior, ultimate displacement/drift ratio, displacement ductility, response modification factor, equivalent viscous damping ratio, residual deformation, effective stiffness, plastic hinge length, strain of reinforcements and nonlinear analysis are investigated and discussed in this paper.

Three-dimensional finite element model for analysis of reinforced concrete members was developed in order to investigate the prediction of bending and shear failure of reinforced concrete beams. A failure surface of concrete in strain space was newly proposed in order to predict accurately the ductile response of concrete under multi-axial confining stresses. Cracking of concrete in triaxial state was incorporated with considering the tensile strain-softening behavior of cracked concrete as well as the cracked shear behavior on cracked surface of concrete caused by aggregate interlocking and, dowel action. By correlation study on failure types of bending and shear of beams, current finite element model was well simulated not only the type of ductile bending failure of under-reinforced beams but also the type of brittle shear failure of no-stirruped reinforced concrete beam.
This article presents a multi-scale simulation approach starting from the molecular level for the adsorption process development, specifically, in n-hexane adsorption on activated carbon. A grand canonical Monte-Carlo(GCMC) method is used for the prediction of adsorption isotherms of n-hexane on activated carbon at the molecular level. Geometric effects and hydrodynamic properties of the adsorption column are examined by means of the two dimensional CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation. The adsorption isotherms from the molecular simulation and the axial diffusivity from the CFD simulation are exploited for the process simulation where the elution curve of n-hexane is obtained. For the first moment(mean residence time) of the pulse-response with respect to temperature and flowrate, the process simulation results obtained from this three-steps multiscale simulation approach show a good agreement with experimental data within 20% of maximum difference. The multi-scale simulation approach addressed in this study will be useful to accelerate the adsorption process development, while reducing the number of experiments required.

The objective of this paper is to propose an analysis technique to predict the behavior of PC wall structures subjected to cyclic load. While PC wall panel is idealized by finite elements, the joints at which PC walls are connected each other are idealized by nonlinear spring elements. Axial and shear spring elements are developed for simulating shear, compression and tension behaviors of joints. The strength and stiffness of each spring elements we presented from the previous research results and incorporated into the computer program of DRAIN-2DX. The proposed analysis technique is evaluated by analyzing specimens previously tested and comparing with those. On the strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and lateral drift, analytical results show good agreements with test results. This means the proposed technique is effective to predict the response of the PC wall structures.
