  • A Sub-kWe small-scale experimental test loop was manufactured to investigate characteristics of the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle. A high-speed turbo-generator was also designed and manufactured. The designed rotational speed of this turbo-generator was 200,000 rpm. Because of the low expansion ratio through the turbine and low mass flowrate, the rotational speed of the turbo-generator was high. Therefore, it was difficult to select the rotating parts and design the turbine wheel, axial force balance and rotor dynamics in the lab-scale experimental test loop. Using only one channel of the nozzle, the partial admission method was adapted to reduce the rotational speed of the rotor. This was the world's first approach to the supercritical carbon dioxide turbo-generator. A cold-run test using nitrogen gas under an atmospheric condition was conducted to observe the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics. The vibration level of the rotor was obtained using a gap sensor, and the results showed that the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics was allowable.

  • In this study, three-dimensional fluid flow analyses have been performed in order to investigate the performance characteristics of a horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations utilizing the shear-stress-transport turbulence model. The computational domain for the flow analysis has been composed of hexahedral grids, and the grid dependency test has been carried out so as to determine the optimum grid size. Performance characteristics of the HATT have been investigated in consideration of the effects of hub nose geometry, inflow angle, and the tower. It has been found that the power output can be enhanced along with an increase of the ratio of the length to the diameter of the turbine nose, and the power of HATT has been reduced by approximately 10% when the primary fluid flow had an inflow angle of 15°. The power output of downstream HATT is found to be lower than that of the upstream HATT by about 1%.

  • Box-Wilson experimental design method, known as central composite design, is the design of any information-gathering exercises where variation is present. This method was devised to gather as much data as possible in spite of the low design cost. This method was employed to model the effect of mixing factors on several performances of 60 MPa high strength self compacting concrete and to numerically calculate the optimal mix proportion. The nonlinear relations between factors and responses of HSSCC were approximated in the form of second order polynomial equation. In order to characterize five performances like compressive strength, passing ability, segregation resistance, manufacturing cost and density depending on five factors like water-binder ratio, cement content, fine aggregate percentage, fly ash content and superplasticizer content, the experiments were made at the total 52 experimental points composed of 32 factorial points, 10 axial points and 10 center points. The study results showed that Box-Wilson experimental design was really effective in designing the experiments and analyzing the relation between factor and response.

  • This paper designed the antenna for collecting and servicing the traffic information that apply to freeway Traffic Management System, as using DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication). Active DSRC is the technology that is using 5.8GHz Radio Frequency to a mean Sequency and there are a lot of the case occurring a physical electric wave shadowing because of the traveling straight of a electric wave. In such inferior communication environment, it constructed the stabilized communication link that can do collecting and servicing the correct traffic information and designed the beam pattern considering the establishment position of the antenna that can apply to various road environments and a communication area. By considering the communication link environment, this paper designed and manufacture the mean frequency of 5.8GHz, the input loss of -17dB in 75MHz bandwidth, the Axial ratio of 1.5:1, and $2{\times}4$ array microstrip antenna which beam pattern have the characteristic of $55^{\circ}$ horizontal half power beam width and $26^{\circ}$elevation half power beam width and the minimum establishment height of the antenna was designed as 14m for avoiding electric wave shadowing on a physical condition between vehicles

  • In this study, a reliability-based design optimization of a 130-m class fixed-type offshore platform, to be installed in the North Sea, was carried out, while considering environmental, material, and manufacturing uncertainties to enhance its structural safety and economic aspects. For the reliability analysis, and reliability-based design optimization of the structural integrity, unity check values (defined as the ratio between working and allowable stress, for axial, bending, and shear stresses), of the members of the offshore platform were considered as constraints. Weight of the supporting jacket structure was minimized to reduce the manufacturing cost of the offshore platform. Statistical characteristics of uncertainties were defined based on observed and measured data references. Reliability analysis and reliability-based design optimization of a jacket-type offshore structure were computationally burdensome due to the large number of members; therefore, we suggested a method for variable screening, based on the importance of their output responses, to reduce the dimension of the problem. Furthermore, a deterministic design optimization was carried out prior to the reliability-based design optimization, to improve overall computational efficiency. Finally, the optimal design obtained was compared with the conventional rule-based offshore platform design in terms of safety and cost.

  • Cervical neural foraminal stenosis is a very common spinal disease that affects a relatively large number of people of all ages. However, since imaging methods that quantitatively provide neural foraminal stenosis are lacking, this study attempts to present quantitative measurement results by reconstructing 3D computed tomography images. Using a 3D reconstruction software, the surrounding bones were removed, including the spinous process, transverse process, and lamina of the cervical spine so that the neural foramen were well observed. Using Image J, a region of interest including the neural foramen area of the 3D image was set, and the number of pixels of the neural foramen area was measured. The neural foramen area was calculated by multiplying the number of measured pixels by the pixel size. In order to measure the widest area of the neural foramen, it was measured between 40-50 degrees in the opposite direction and 15-20 degrees toward the head. The measured cervical neural foramen area showed consistent measurement values. The largest measured area of the right neural foramen C5-6 was 12.21 ㎟, and after 2 years, the area was measured to be 9.95 ㎟, indicating that 18% stenosis had progressed. Since 3D reconstruction using axial CT scan images, no additional radiation exposure is required, and the area of stenosis can be objectively presented. In addition, it is good to explain to patients with neural stenosis while viewing 3D images, and it is considered a good method to be used in the evaluation of the progression of stenosis and post-operative evaluation.

  • The soundproof tunnels have been generally designed with H-beam girders, and the high weight of H-beam may cause the excessive design of the substructure. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new soundproof tunnel girder design composed of pipes and discontinuous plates. First, the structural behavior of the straight girder according to the design parameters was examined through finite element analysis. The arrangement and shape of the plates were determined as the design parameter, to obtain the optimal design of girder. After then, the structural behavior and buckling stability of the arched girder were subsequently evaluated. As a result of the parameter analysis, it was confirmed that the axial force acting on the girder increased and the moment decreased as the ratio of unsupported sections decreased or the number of supporting plates increased. The stress concentration on the pipe member was relieved by increasing the long axis length of the elliptical plate. Arched girder analysis showed that the structural efficiency increase as the long axis of elliptical plate increase. As a result of the buckling evaluation, the buckling threshold load of the three connected girders was about 3.7 times higher than the design load. Consequently, it was confirmed that the proposed soundproof tunnel structure design satisfies both light weight and structural safety.

  • YGN 3 is the first nuclear power plant to use the Core Protection Calculator (CPC) as the core protection system and the Core Operating Limit Supervisory System (COLSS) as the core monitor-ing system in Korea. The CPC is designed to provide on-line calculations of Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio (DNBR) and Local Power Density (LPD) and to initiate reactor trip if the core conditions exceed the DNBR or LPD design limit. The COLSS is designed to assist the operator in implementing the Limiting Conditions for Operation (LCOs) in Technical Specifications for DNBR/Linear Heat Rate (LHR) margin, azimuthal tilt, and axial shape index and to provide alarm when the LCOs are reached. During YGN 3 initial startup testing, extensive CPC/COLSS related tests ore peformed to ver-ify the CPC/COLSS performance and to obtain optimum CPC/COLSS calibration constants at var, -ious core conditions. Most of test results met their specific acceptance criteria. In the case of missing the acceptance criteria, the test results ore analyzed, evaluated, and justified. Through the analysis and evaluation of each of the CPC/COLSS related test results, it can be concluded that the CPC/COLSS are successfully Implemented as designed at YGN 3.

  • In the present study, in order to clarify the effects of latent hydraulic property of granulated blast furnace slag (GBF slag) on the liquefaction, GBF slag was cured in the high temperature alkali water (adding the calcium hydroxide, pH=12, water temperature is about $30^{\circ}C$), and then the cyclic and the static tri-axial compression tests were carried out. Then the results were compared with those for Japanese standard sand of Toyoura sand and natural sand of Genkai sand. From the test results, it is clarified that the liquefaction strength of the GBF slag increases with the increase of the curing period by the hardening due to the latent hydraulic property. It is also shown that GBF slag with Dr=50% and 80% which was cured for 189 days in the fresh-water shows cohesion due to developing of latent hydraulic property. In addition, as for the liquefaction strength of GBFS during the hardening process, a linear relation between the cyclic stress ratio $R_{20}$ at the number of stress cycles Nc=20 and cohesion $C_{d}$ was observed. It is also clarified that the liquefaction strength for cured GBF slag in the high temperature alkali water is predicted by the cohesive strength or the unconfined compressive strength.

  • Experimental and analytical studies are performed on the mechanical behavior of concrete-filled tubular(CFT) truss girders for different f/L ratios. Bending tests are conducted on two CFT truss girder specimens to determine fundamental structural characteristics such as the strength and deformation properties. Nonlinear material models for CFT members subjected to an axial compressive force are compared in this paper by using the nonlinear finite element program, ABAQUS. Previous researchers have proposed several nonlinear stress-strain models of confined concrete. In this study, the nonlinear analyses are performed applying several stress-strain models for confined concrete proposed by Mander, Sakino, Han, Susantha and Ellobody, and the results are compared with the experimental results in terms of load-deflection and load-strain relationships. Based on the comparisons of the load-deflection relationships, the models proposed by Mander and Susantha provide a maximum load about 12.0~13.8% higher and that by Sakino gives a maximum load about 7.6% higher than the experimental results. The models proposed by Han and Ellobody give a maximum load only about 0.2~1.2% higher than the test results, showing the best agreement among the proposed stress-strain models. However, the load-strain relations predicted by the existing models generally provide conservative results exhibiting larger strains than the experimental data.
