  • The recent earthquake in Korea caused a lot of damage to reinforced concrete (RC) columns with non-seismic details. The nonlinear analysis enables predicting the hysteresis behavior of RC columns under earthquakes, but the analytical model used for the columns must be accurate and practical. This paper studied the nonlinear analysis models built into a commercial structural analysis program for the existing RC columns. The load-displacement relationships, maximum strength, initial stiffness, and energy dissipation predicted by the three analysis models were compared and analyzed. The results were similar to those tested in the order of the fiber, Pivot, and Takeda models, whereas the fiber model took the most time to build. For columns subjected to axial load, the Pivot model could predict the behavior at a similar level to that of the fiber model. Based on the above, it is expected that the Pivot model can be applied most practically for existing RC columns.

  • The determination of compressive zone at the critical section of concrete walls under in-plane flexure is important in both assessing the ductility and designing the seismic retrofit. Recognizing this, the once-predominated code approach to determine the compressive zone was advanced by considering concrete rectangular stress block parameters varying with the extreme fiber strain in compression. It is shown that the major factors influencing the magnitude of compressive zone are axial load ratio, concrete strength, longitudinal steel ratio, yield strength and the level of strain at extreme compression fiber of wall sections. The present paper closes with the discussion for the research agenda requiring further study to investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete walls.

  • In the Ultimate Strength Design, the design strength of a member is determined by multiplying the strength reduction factor to the nominal strength. This concept may be a reasonable approach, however it can not consider failure modes appropriately. Moreover, column design strength diagram show an abrupt change at a low level of axial load, which does not seem to be reasonable. This research compares the design strength determined by the strength resistance factors. As the material resistance factors for flexure and compression, 0.65 and 0.90 are proposed for concrete and steel, respectively. The design strength calculation process by applying material resistance factors addresses failure modes more effectively than by applying member strength reduction factor, and provides more resnable design strength for reinforced concrete flexural and compression members.

  • The objective of this work is to describe the main steps involved in the derivation of a GBT (Generalised Beam Theory) formulation to analyse the vibration behaviour of loaded cold-formed steel members and also to illustrate the application and capabilities of this formulation. In particular, the paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed investigation about the local and global free vibration behaviour of lipped channel simply supported columns. After reporting some relevant earlier GBT-based results dealing with the buckling and vibration behaviours of columns and load-free members, the paper addresses mostly issues concerning the variation of the column fundamental frequency and vibration mode nature/shape with its length and axial compression level. For validation purposes, some GBT-based results are also compared with values obtained by means of 4-node shell finite element analyses performed in the code ABAQUS.

  • There are lots of tunnel intervals in the KTX II stage construction line for the linearity of railway line passing mountain region. In order to use the rocks from tunnel excavations, railway subgrades are constructed with crushed rock-soil mixtures. In this study, plain strain test using large scale box was conducted in order to analyze the characteristics of deformation behavior of railway subgrades composed of crushed rock-soil mixtures. The effects of variation of degree of saturation, stress level of applied loadings, and number of loading cycles on the resilient and permanent deformation behavior were analyzed. The results show that degree of saturation have a great effect on the deformation behavior of crushed rock-soil mixtures. The axial strain ranges between $0.1{\sim}0.8%$ with variation of degree of saturation, in assumption that deviatoric stress applied on the subgrade by high-speed train load is 55kPa.

  • The work aims at the comparison among commonly used research programs concerning moment-curvature ($M-{\chi}$) diagrams of confined R.C. members. The software considered in this work are Sap2000, SeismoStruct and Opensees. The curves provided by these software, given the same modelling, have been compared to those provided by a theoretical fiber model. A parametric analysis has been led on rectangular column sections with different level of axial load and different stirrups spacing. The accuracy of the modelling of the considered structural programs has been investigated by comparing their results with those obtained by applying the theoretical fiber model.

  • RC shear walls are frequently used as lateral force-resisting system in building construction because they have sufficient stiffness and strength against damage and collapse. If RC shear walls are properly designed and proportioned, these walls can also behave as ductile flexural members like cantilevered beams. To achieve this goal, the designer should provide adequate strength and deformation capacity of shear walls corresponding to the anticipated deformation level. In this study, the level of demands for deformation of shear walls was investigated using a displacement-based design approach. Also, deformation capacities of shear walls are evaluated through laboratory tests of shear walls with specific transverse confinement widely used in Korea. Four full-scale wall specimens with different wall boundary details and cross-sections were constructed for the experiment. The displacement-based design approach could be used to determine the deformation demands and capacities depending on the aspect ratio, ratio of wall area to floor plan area, flexural reinforcement ratio, and axial load ratio. Also, the specific boundary detailing for shear wall can be applied to enhance the deformation capacity of the shear wall.

  • The paper describes the mechanical behavior of short concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns with circular section. The efficiency of the steel tube in confining the concrete core depending on concrete strength and the steel tube thickness was examined. Fifteen columns were tested to failure under concentric axial loading. Furthermore, a mechanical model based on the interaction between the concrete core and the steel tube was developed. The model employs a volumetric strain history for the concrete, characterized by the level of applied confining stress. The situation of passive confinement is accounted for by an incremental procedure, which continuously updates the confining stress. The post-yield behavior of the columns is greatly influenced by the confinement level and is related to the efficiency of the steel tube in confining the concrete core. It is possible to classify the post-yield behavior into three categories: strain softening, perfectly plastic and strain hardening behavior. The softening behavior, which is due to a shear plane failure in the concrete core, was found for some of the CFT columns with high-strength concrete. Nevertheless, with a CFT column, it is possible to use high-strength concrete to obtain higher load resistance and still achieve a good ductile behavior.

  • Computational investigation was conducted to study the effects of the shape parameter of shroud on the performance of the outdoor unit of an air-conditioners. For this study the Design of Experiment(4-factor 3-level) was created and the an automatic program was composed using VBA to reduce the load of pre-process for CFD. The estimated mathematical equation was produced from this analysis and it was found that the gap between fan and shroud affects more heavily than the other parameters. As a result, the composition of the best parameters was verified that its flow rate was increased by 10 percents and sound pressure level was reduced by 1.2 dBA compare with the worst. And finally, a kind of Propeller fan with blades which were attached to the shroud, so-called 'ProBeller Fan' was introduced in this study.
