Failure behaviors of thin cylinder with corrosion are very important for the integrity of boiler and pressure vessel system. In this study, FEM with internal pressure are conducted on 1000 mm diameter (length 3000 mm and thickness, 5.9 mm) SS400 carbon steel. Failure behaviors of locally wall thinned cylinders were calculated by elasto-plastic analysis using finite element method. The elasto-plastic analysis was performed by FE code ANSYS. We simulated various types of local wall thinning that can be occurred at cylinder surface due to corrosion. Locally wall thinned shapes were machined to be different in size along the circumferential or axial direction of straight cylinder. In case of local wall thinned length 30 mm, internal pressure, when the crack initiation and the plastic collapse occur, didn't decrease dramatically even though local wall thinned depth was deep. In 400 mm, the more local wall thinned depth is deep, the more internal pressure decreased dramatically. In degraded materials, crack is easily initiation but plastic collapse was difficult.
various properties and manufacturing conditions were investigated in order to synthesize the glass-ceramics of $CaO-P_2O_5$ system for bioceramics. Compositions of easy unidirectional crystallization were between 47.5 and 50, 0mol% CaO For the glass rods prepared by pulling them to about 3 times the original rod length unidirectional crystallization was easier than original glass rods. These samples were crystallized in the axial direction at 15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/min in an electric furnace with a temperature gradient of about 3$0^{\circ}C$/cm at 57$0^{\circ}C$. Bending strengths of surface and unidirectionally crystallized samples were investigated with various CaO/$P_2O_5$ molar ratios. The bending strengths of unidirectionally crystallized samples were larger than those of surface -crystallized samples and the value of 47.5CaO.52.5 $P_2O_5$ was 1650kg/$cm^2$. XRD patterns showed that major phase is $\beta$-Ca(PO3) with minor phase 2CaO.$P_2O_5$ Relative crystal-linity of surface-crystallized sample was inversely propertional to the bending strenth. SEM of fracture surface of unidirectionally crystallized samples revealed an unidirectionally aligned structures.
In the examination of Steam Generator (SG) tube in Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Eddy Current Testing (ECT) probes play an Important role in detecting the defects. Bobbin probe and Rotating Pancake Coil (RPC) probe is usually used for the inspection of SG tube. Bobbin probe is good at high speed inspection, but ability of detection of circumferential defect is very weak. On the contrary RPC probe, which moves for inspection in the direction of axial and circumferential simultaneously, has very slow inspection speed, but it was excellent detection capability fur small cracks, which is hardly detected by bobbin probe. Many examinations of SG tube examination of NPP are achieved during short period. Therefore, solution about this must develop probe of new form for examination performance and examination time shortening of other probe. In this paper, analyzed technological present condition of Bob-bin probe and RPC probe been using in Nondestructive Testing (NDT) for SG tube defect detection and Appeared about background theory and view of developed probe newly.
In this paper the time-dependent creep analysis of a thick-walled FG cylinder with finite length subjected to axisymmetric mechanical and thermal loads are presented. First order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used for description of displacement components. Inner and outer temperatures and outer pressure are considered as thermo-mechanical loadings. Both thermal and mechanical loadings are assumed variable along the axial direction using the sinusoidal distribution. To find temperature distribution, two dimensional heat transfer equation is solved using the required boundary conditions. The energy method and Euler equations are employed to reach final governing equations of the cylinder. After determination of elastic stresses and strains, the creep analysis can be performed based on the Yang method. The results of this research indicate that the boundaries have important effects on the responses of the cylinder. The effect of important parameters of this analysis such as variable loading, non-homogeneous index of functionally graded materials and time of creep is studied on the behaviors of the cylinder.
Numerical simulations and experiment of a hydrodynamic and thermally developed turbulent flow through square ducts (3.0 ${\times}$ 3.0 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and friction factors. Turbulent swirl flows having Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000, a rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/D$_h$) of 0.067, and a length-to-hydraulic diameter(L/D$_h$) of 30, are considered. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. The twisted tape has 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 2.8 cm, length of 90 cm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall is composed of isolated aluminum sections, and two cases of surface heating are set. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and square ducts with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs produces the best overall transfer performance.
Rolling process to fabricate a strip with even thickness is significant to enhance the quality of the strip. The thickness of a strip can be effectively controlled by pair-cross mills. However, pair-cross mill generates thrust in the axial direction of roller and causes skewness, deflection, twist and even accidental roll chock failure. Therefore, accurate estimation of the thrust of the pair-cross mill during rolling process is necessary to monitor the failure of roll and the quality of products. An empirical equation given by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) is hitherto employed, where the thrust is expressed in terms of rolling force, reduction ratio and crossed angle. However it turns out that the MHI empirical equation provides somehow inaccurate and unsuitable thrust in practical rolling processes. Moreover, we learn that three parameters involved in MHI equation are coupled each other. In this paper, axiomatic design principle is employed to select appropriate parameters involved in approximate equation in order to make parameters uncoupled. A quadratic equation using response surface method with new parameters is suggested. The accuracy of the approximate model is examined by comparing with real experimental data.
In this paper history of stresses, strains, radial and circumferential displacements of a functionally graded thick-walled hollow cylinder due to creep phenomenon is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary non-axisymmetric two dimensional thermo-mechanical loading and uniform magnetic field along axial direction. Using equilibrium, strain-displacements and stress-strain relations, the governing differential equations of the problem containing creep strains are derived in terms of radial and circumferential displacements. Since the displacements are varying with time due to creep phenomenon, an analytical solution is not available for these equations. Thus, a semi-analytical procedure based on separation of variables and Fourier series together with a numerical procedure is employed. The numerical results indicate that the non-axisymmetric loading and the material grading index have significant effect on stress redistributions. Moreover, by proper selection of material for any combination of non-axisymmetric loading, one can arrive suitable response for the cylinder to achieve optimal design. With some simplifications, the results are validated with the existing literature.
Heat transfer data are presented which describe characteristics of the transitional thermal boundary layers on the NACA0012 airfoil with upstream wakes. The wakes are generated periodically by circular cylindrical rods which rotate around the airfoil like a squirrel cage. The unsteady wakes simulate those produced by the upstream rotating blade rows in axial turbomachines. The pressure or suction side of the airfoil is also simulated according to the rotating direction of circular rods. As the Reynolds number and the number of rotating rods increase, the boundary layer transition occurs earlier and the Nusselt number increases. The difference of heat transfer coefficient is less on the pressure side than on the suction side. At a constant Reynolds number, the Nusselt number is larger and smaller, respectively, before and after transition as the Strouhal number increases.
This paper is concerned with the viscous interaction between rotor and stator. The viscous interaction is caused by wakes from upstream blades. The rotor cascade in the experiment was composed with five blades, and cylinders were placed to make the stator wakes and their locations were about 50 percent upstream of blade chord. The locations of cylinders were varied in the direction of cascade axis with 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and 75 percent of pitch length. The static pressure distributions on the blade surfaces and the velocity distributions in the cascade flow were measured. From the experimental result it was found that the value of velocity defect by a cylinder wake might vary depending on the wake position within the cascade but the value at the cascade exit approached to some constant value regardless of the difference of wake locus. The momentum defect at the downstream from the cascade and the pressure distribution on the blade surfaces showed that the wake flowing near the blade surfaces caused the decrease of lift and the increase of drag regardless of the disappearance of flow separation.
In this study, the one-piece propeller shaft composed of carbon/epoxy was designed and manufactured for 4 wheel drive automobiles that can bear the target torsional torque performance of 3.5kN.m. For the CFRP tube, braiding machine was used to weaving carbon fiber and it was formed the braided yarns with the braid angle ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ and axial yarns to improve strength of the lengthwise direction. The final CFRP tube of propeller shaft was evaluated through the torsional torque test. The CFRP propeller shaft satisfied requirement of the target torsional maximum torque of 3.5kN.m. Also, it was found that the one-piece composite propeller shaft with CFRP tube had 30% weight saving effect compared with a two-piece steel propeller shaft.
