Numerical flow computations around an aeroelastic 3D square cylinder immersed in the turbulent boundary layer are shown. Present computational code can be characterized by three numerical aspects which are 1) the method of artificial compressibility is adopted for the incompressible flow computations, 2) the domain decomposition technique is used to get better grid point distributions, and 3) to achieve the conservation law both in time and space when the flow is computed a with moving and transformed grid, the time derivatives of metrics are evaluated using the time-and-space volume. To provide time-dependant inflow boundary conditions satisfying prescribed time-averaged velocity profiles, a convenient way for generating inflow turbulence is proposed. The square cylinder is modeled as a 4-lumped-mass system and it vibrates with two-degree of freedom of heaving motion. Those blocks which surround the cylinder are deformed according to the cylinder's motion. Vigorous oscillations occur as the vortex shedding frequency approaches cylinder's natural frequencies.
Effects of rotor-stator blade count ratio on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a cascade was studied by using a Navier-Stokes code. Present Navier-Stokes code is a parallel code and works on a multi-cpu machine. It is based on the SIMPLE algorithm and uses QUICK scheme for convection terms and second order back difference for all temporal derivatives. Computations were carried out for two cases : case 1 is for 3 stator cascade passages subjected to two upstream wakes while case 2 is for 2 stator cascade passages subjected to three upstream wakes. Numerical solutions show that rotor-stator blade count ratio plays a significant role in the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the stator cascade. Case 2 shows smaller unsteady fluctuation than case 1, even if they show the same time averaged value. The smaller fluctuation of case 2 is believed due to strong interaction between unsteady vortices. The unsteady lift variation of case 2 is shown to have many high frequency fluctuations as more unsteady vortices travel around the cascade. The unsteady turbulent kinetic energy due to the upstream wake is also shown to decay faster through the cascade passage than in the free stream.

The course stability performance for tankers is evaluated by computational fluid dynamics. In the present work, a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code is applied to a maneuvering problem covering the pure drift and yaw motions. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the hydrodynamic force in the bare hull (AFRAMAX) in pure drift and yaw motion and to provide information about the trends in the forces and moments when the rudder angles are varied. The flow simulation is performed by FLUENT. The CFD code is examined to find the optimistic computational condition such as size of grid, turbulence model and initial condition. The hydrodynamic derivatives in drift and pure yaw motion are estimated by the numerical simulation, and then the stability levers are calculated. It is confirmed that the computations show the superiority and inferiority of course stability performance according to the hull forms. Finally, the CFD code is applied to the estimation of the rudder forces when the rudder angles are varied. The propeller effect expressed by the body force distribution is also included.
In this study, we investigate surge force, heave force, and pitch moment, which are vertical plane hydrodynamics acting on Manta-type unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), using a model test and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Assessing the maneuvering hydrodynamic characteristic of an underwater glider in the initial design stage is crucial. Although a model test is the best approach for obtaining the maneuvering hydrodynamic derivatives for underwater vehicles, numerical methods, such as Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, have been used owing to their efficiency in terms of time and cost. Therefore, we conducted an RANS-based CFD calculation and a model test for Manta-type UUVs. In addition, we conducted a validation study through a comparison with a model test conducted at a circular water channel (CWC) in Korea Maritime & Ocean University Furthermore, two RANS solvers (Star-CCM+ and OpenFOAM) were used and compared. Finally, the maneuvering hydrodynamic forces obtained from the static drift and resistance tests for a Manta-type UUV were presented.

In this paper, a stable marching-on in time(MOT) method with a time domain combined field integral equation(CFIE) is presented to obtain the transient scattering response from arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional conducting bodies. This formulation is based on a linear combination of the time domain electric field integral equation(EFIE) with the magnetic field integral equation(MFIE). The time derivatives in the EFIE and MFIE are approximated using a central finite difference scheme and other terms are averaged over time. This time domain CFIE approach produces results that are accurate and stable when solving for transient scattering responses from conducting objects. Numerical results with the proposed MOT scheme are presented and compared with those obtained from the conventional method and the inverse discrete Fourier transform(IDFT) of the frequency domain CFIE solution.

Meat becomes brown and rancid during storage in the refrigerator and display in the case. Color changes, metmyoglobin formation and lipid oxidation are the important problems in the transportation / distribution of meat and retail display. The freshness of meat is determined by the sense of vision and smell. Since conventional method determining lipid oxidation is time consuming and destructive (it needs to homogenize meat with reagents, filtrate, time for reaction and read optical density using spectroscopy), more rapid and nondestructive technical tools are desired. The objective of this work was to evaluate near-infrared spectroscopy as an analytical tool for determining meat color, metmyoglobin formation and lipid oxidation. in beef, pork and chicken. Semitendinosus and longissimus thoracis muscles from six beef steers, biceps femoris and longissimus thoracis muscles from twelve LWD crossbred pigs, and superficial pectoral muscles from twenty-four broilers were used. About a 5-cm diameter and 1-cm thick sample (20.0g) was cut from the muscle and placed on plastic foam, over-wrapped with PVC film, and displayed under flourescent lights at 4 degrees C. during 10 days for beef and pork or 4 days for chicken. The spectra was measured by NIR systems Model 5500 Spectrophotometer using fiber optic scan at range of 400 - 1100 nm. Data were recorded at 2 nm intervals and 10 scans / 10 sec were averaged for every sample. Data obtained were saved as log 1/Re, where Re is the reflectance energy, and then mathematically transformed to second derivatives to reduce effects of differences in particle size. $L^{*}$, $a^{*}$ and $b^{*}$, and metmyoglobin formation were determined by conventional spectrophotometer using the integrating sphere unit. 2-Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured for lipid oxidation. A multiple linear regression was used to find the equation which would best fit the data. The number of wavelengths used in the equation was selected based on the fewer number compared to the increasing multiple correlation and Decreasing standard error. (omitted)
The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.

The objectives of this study were to develop models to predict quality parameters of Korean bee-honeys by visible and NIR spectroscopic technique. Two kinds of bee-honey fronl acacia and polyflower sources were tested in this study. The honeys were harvested in the spring of 2000 and stored in the storage facility at 20$^{\circ}C$ during experiments. Total of 394 samples of honey were analyzed. Reflectance spectra, moisture contents, ash, invert sugar, sucrose, F/G (fructose/glucose) ratio, HMF (hydroxymethyl furfural), and C12/C13 ratio of honeys were measured. The average values for the tested honeys were 19.9% of moisture contents, 0.12% of ash, 68.4% of invert sugar, 5.7% of sucrose, 1.27 of F/G(fructose/glucose) ratio, 14.4 mg/kg of HMF, and -19.1 of C12/C13 ratio. A spectrophotometer, equipped with a single-beam scanning monochromator (NIR Systems, Model 6500, USA) and a horizontal setup module, was used to collect reflectance data from honey. The reflectance spectra were measured in wavelength ranges of 400∼2,498 nm. with 2 nm of interval. Thirty-two repetitive scans were averaged, transformed to log(1/Reflectance), and then were stored in a microcomputer file, forming one spectrum per measurement. A sample cell and reflectance plate were made to hold honey samples constantly. Spectra of honey samples were divided into a calibration set and a validation set. The calibration set was used during model development, and the validation set was used to predict quality parameters from unknown spectra. The PLS(Partial Least Square) models were developed to predict the quality parameters of honeys. The first and the second derivatives of raw spectra were also used to develop the models with proper smoothing gap. The MSC (multiplicative scatter correction) and the SNV & Dtr.(standard normal variate and detranding) preprocessing were applied to all spectra to minimize sample-to-sample light scatter differences. The PLS models showed good relationships between predicted and measured quality parameters of honeys in the wavelength range of 1100∼2200 nm. However, the PLS analysis was not good enough to predict HMF of honeys.
