  • Nanoporous silica aerogel insulation material is both lightweight and efficient; it has important value in the fields of aerospace, petrochemicals, electric metallurgy, shipbuilding, precision instruments, and so on. A theoretical calculation model and experimental measurement of equivalent thermal conductivity for nanoporous silica aerogel insulation material are introduced in this paper. The heat transfer characteristics and thermal insulation principle of aerogel nano are analyzed. The methods of SiO2 aerogel production are compared. The pressure range of SiO2 aerogel is 1Pa-atmospheric pressure; the temperature range is room temperature-900K. The pore diameter range of particle SiO2 aerogel is about 5 to 100 nm, and the average pore diameter range of about 20 ~ 40 nm. These results show that experimental measurements are in good agreement with theoretical calculation values. For nanoporous silica aerogel insulation material, the heat transfer calculation method suitable for nanotechnology can precisely calculate the equivalent thermal conductivity of aerogel nano insulation materials. The network structure is the reason why the thermal conductivity of the aerogel is very low. Heat transfer of materials is mainly realized by convection, radiation, and heat transfer. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of the heat transfer path in aerogel can be reduced by nanotechnology.

  • Magnetic resonance current density imaging (MRCDI) is a useful method for measuring electrical current density distribution inside an object. To avoid object rotations during the conventional MRCDI scans, we have reconstructed current density component images by applying a spatial filter to the magnetic field data measured both inside and outside the object. To measure the magnetic field outside the object with MRI, we immersed the object in a water tank. To evaluate accuracy of the current density imaging, we have made a conductivity phantom with a corresponding finite element method model. We have compared the experimentally obtained current density images with the ones calculated by the finite element method. The average errors of the reconstructed current density images were 6.6 ∼ 45.4 % when the injected currents were 1 ∼ 24 mA. We expect that the current density component imaging technique can be used in diverse biomedical applications such as electrical therapy system developments and biological electrical safety analysis.

  • Magnetic and conducting aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC-Fe3O4) nanocomposite has been prepared in the presence of aniline sulfide resin (ASR), aniline, $Fe_3O_4$ coated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and initiator. The magnetic properties of the resulting composites showed ferromagnetic behavior, such as high-saturated magnetization (Ms= 41 emu/g), and coercive force (Hc=1.5 Oe). The saturated magnetization was increased by increasing of $Fe_3O_4$ content and decreased by increasing aniline ratio. The transmission electron micrograph (TEM) and X-ray diffraction proved that nanometer-sized about 20-30 nm $Fe_3O_4$ in the composite. The average size of ASC-$Fe_3O_4$ nanocomposite with core-shell structure was about 50-60 nm, and polydisperse. This approach may also be extended to the synthesis and modification of other polymers. Electrical conductivity of aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC) nanocomposite has been studied by four-point probe method and produced $3.3{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ conductivity for it. The conductivity of the composites at room temperature depended on the $Fe_3O_4$, aniline ratio and doping degree. The thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) results showed that this resin is thermal resistance near of $500^{\circ}C$. So, It can be used for resistance thermal coating for military applications. $Fe_3O_4$-PASC nanocomposite has been flexible structure with electrical and magnetic properties.

  • Magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography(MREIT) has been suggested to produce cross-sectional conductivity images of an electrically conducting object such as the human body. In most previous studies, recessed electrodes have been used to inject imaging currents into the object. An MRI scanner was used to capture induced magnetic flux density data inside the object and a conductivity image reconstruction algorithm was applied to the data. This paper reports the performance of a thin and flexible carbon-hydrogel electrode that replaces the bulky and rigid recessed electrode in previous studies. The new carbon-hydrogel electrode produces a negligible amount of artifacts in MR and conductivity images and significantly simplifies the experimental procedure. We can fabricate the electrode in different shapes and sizes. Adding a layer of conductive adhesive, we can easily attach the electrode on an irregular surface with an excellent contact. Using a pair of carbon-hydrogel electrodes with a large contact area, we may inject an imaging current with increased amplitude primarily due to a reduced average current density underneath the electrodes. Before we apply the new electrode to a human subject, we evaluated its performance by conducting MREIT imaging experiments of five swine legs. Reconstructed conductivity images of the swine legs show a good contrast among different muscles and bones. We suggest a future study of human experiments using the carbon-hydrogel electrode following the guideline proposed in this paper.

  • To optimize the conductivity and to reduce the weight by as much as possible, Al-Cu composites were prepared through a suction-casting procedure. Pure copper metal foam was infiltrated by melted aluminum with the use of the vacuum, after which warm rolling was conducted to remove several remaining pores at the interface between the Cu foam and the aluminum matrix. Despite the short casting time, significant dissolution of Cu into the melt was observed. Moreover, it was found that various Al-Cu intermetallic compounds arose at the interface during the isothermal heating process after the casting and rolling steps. The average thickness of the Al-Cu intermetallic compound tended to increase in proportion to the heating time. The electrical and thermal conductivity levels of the cast composites were found to be comparatively low, mainly due to the dissolution of the Cu foam and the formation of intermetallics at the interface.

  • This research was conducted to analyze the influence of the environmental factors on water quality such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity of rainfall, throughfall, soil water(A and B layer), and stream water quality at a small forested watershed. Rainfall, throughfall, soil water(A and B layer), and stream water were sampled at the study sites in Kwanak Arboretum, Seoul National University in Mt. Kwanak for 14 months(Jul. 1, 1996~Aug. 31, 1997). Average rainfall pH value was 6.06(ranged from 5.02 to 6.60). Acid rain frequency(less than pH 5.6) was 16.7%. The lowest rainfall pH value was 5.02. Average of pH values in hydrological processes were decreasing in the following order, stream water>soil water [Prunus serrulata var, spontanea(B layer>A layer)]>throughfall(Prunus serrulata var. spontanea)>soil water [Carpinus laxiflora(B layer >A layer)]>throughfall(Carpinus laxiflora)>rainfall>soil water [Pinus rigida(B layer>A layer)]>throughfall(Pinus rigida). pH values of throughfall in Prunes serrulata var. spontanea and Carpinus laxiflora were higher in Pines rigida. Average of dissolved oxygen values in hydrological processes were decreasing in the order, stream water>throughfall(Carpinus laxiflora>Prunus serrulata var, spontanea>Pines rigida)>rainfall>soil water [Prunes serrulata var. spontanea(A layer)>Pines rigida(A layer)>Carpinus laxiflora(A layer)>Prunes serrulata var. spontanea(B layer)>Pines rigida(B layer)>Carpinus laxiflora(B layer)]. And average electrical conductivity values in hydrological processes were decreasing in the order, soil water (B layer>A layer)>throughfall(Pinus rigida>Prunes serrulata var, spontanea>Carpinus laxiflora)>stream water>rainfall. Multiple regression equations of electrical conductivity and $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^+$, total amount of cation, total amount of ion, and no. of before non-rain days in rainfall, throughfall, soil and stream water shows high significance(Multi R; 0.84).

  • Effects of Sc addition on microstructure, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the as-cast and as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-xSc (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5 wt%) alloys are investigated. The average grain size of the as-cast Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg alloy is 2,334 ㎛; however, this value drops to 914 and 529 ㎛ with addition of Sc element at 0.25 wt% and 0.5 wt%, respectively. This grain refinement is due to primary Al3Sc phase forming during solidification. The as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg alloy has a recrystallization structure consisting of almost equiaxed grains. However, the as-extruded Sc-containing alloys consist of grains that are extremely elongated in the extrusion direction. In addition, it is found that the proportion of low-angle grain boundaries below 15 degree is dominant. This is because the addition of Sc results in the formation of coherent and nano-scale Al3Sc phases during hot extrusion, inhibiting the process of recrystallization and improving the strength by pinning of dislocations and the formation of subgrain boundaries. The maximum values of the yield and tensile strength are 126 MPa and 215 MPa for the as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-0.25Sc alloy, respectively. The increase in strength is probably due to the existence of nano-scale Al3Sc precipitates and dense Al2Cu phases. Thermal conductivity of the as-cast Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-xSc alloy is reduced to 204, 187 and 183 W/MK by additions of elemental Sc of 0, 0.25 and 0.5 wt%, respectively. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity of the as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-xSc alloy is about 200 W/Mk regardless of the content of Sc. This is because of the formation of coherent Al3Sc phase, which decreases Sc content and causes extremely high electrical resistivity.

  • The electrorheological (ER) behavior of suspensions in silicone oil of silica gel powder (average particle size 49 $\mu$m) absorbed water was investigated at room temperature with electric fields up to 2.4 KV/mm. In this paper, for development of succcessful ER fluids used for wide temperature range later, we would like to know a fundamental understanding of water on ER effect. As a first step, the ER fluids involving water activated silica gel were measured not only the electrical characteristics such as dielectric constant, current density and electrical conductivity but also the rheological properties on the strength of electric field, the quantity of dispersed phase and absorbed water. From the experimental results that water absorbed to the particles directly affects to the surface charge density of electric double layer model proposed by Schwarz and makes dielectric constant and current density of ER fluids increase. The current density and dynamic yield stress $($\tau$_y)$ of water activated silica gel suspensions was in exponential proportion to the strength of electric field, the quantity of dispersed phase and absorbed water. And the optimum water quantity and weight concentration of silica gel for electrorheological effect were 4-5 wt% and 15 wt%, respectively.

  • Electrical conductivity, I - V and DLTS have been measured on polycrystalline samples of $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ containing small deviation from stoichiometry and small amounts of added titanium. DLTS (Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy) in the current transient mode has been applied to the measurement of the trap density at the grain boundary. Titanium enters the $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ lattice substitutionally as $Ti^{4+}$, thus producing an $Fe^{2+}$ and maintaining the average charge per cation at three. The $Fe^{2+}$acts as a donor center with respect to the surrounding $Fe^{3+}$ions.

  • Recently, the pollution of groundwater has become serious. In particular, the contamination of groundwater near livestock farms is becoming increasingly severe and it is difficult to drink with drinking water. In this paper, a groundwater purifier apparatus that can be installed in a community well was designed. The designed groundwater purifier apparatus enables a RO membrane filter and UV sterilization to remove pollutants, such as heavy metals, bacteria, and organic compounds. In addition, electrical conductivity, pressure, and flow sensors were added for remote monitoring. Remote monitoring of the system can determine the level of fouling and contamination of RO membrane filters through pressure and flow sensor data, and can record changes in the contamination and condition of groundwater through the electrical conductivity of the feed water. The designed groundwater purifier apparatus was installed at a farmhouse and remote monitoring. The result after 15 days of operating a groundwater purifier apparatus and analyzing the monitoring data revealed an average permeate water flow rate of 2.67L/min and an average water pressure of 7.09kgf/㎠, indicating that the RO Membrane filtered without fouling and clogging. The average electrical conductivity was 796.6 S/㎠ of the feed water and 55.6 S/㎠ of permeate water, which is similar to that of general tap water. Through this, it was confirmed that no pollutant occurred in the surroundings. Therefore, the designed groundwater purifier apparatus can confirm the replacement time of the RO membrane filter in advance through remote monitoring, and check the pollution state of the groundwater.
