Industrial complex releasing huge amounts of dusts, fumes and wastewater containing heavy metal(loid)s could be a source of heavy metal(loid)s pollution in arable soil. Heavy metal(loid)s pollution in arable soil adversely affect crops safety, subsequently human being. Hence, it is important to accurately assess the heavy metal(loid)s pollution in soil using pollution indices. The objectives of this study are 1) to compare assessment methods of heavy metal(loid)s pollution in arable soils located near industrial complex in Gyeongsang provinces and 2) to determine the relationship between concentration of plant available heavy metal(loid)s and chemical properties of soil. Soil samples were collected from 85 sites of arable lands nearby 10 industrial complex in Gyeongsang provinces. The average total concentration of all heavy metal(loid)s of the studied soils was higher than that of Korean arable soils but did not exceed the warning criteria established by the Soil Environmental Conservation Act of Korea. Only six sites of arable soils for the total concentration of As, Cu and Ni exceeded the warning criteria (As: $25mg\;kg^{-1}$, Cu: $150mg\;kg^{-1}$, Ni: $100mg\;kg^{-1}$). The contamination factor (CF) and geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$) of the heavy metal(loid)s in arable soils varied among the sampling sites, and the average values of As and Cd were relatively higher than that of other metals. Results of integrated indices of As and Cd in arable soils located near industrial complex indicated that some arable soils were moderately or heavily polluted. The plant available concentration of heavy metal(loid)s was negatively related to the soil pH and negative charge of soil. Available Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations had relatively high correlation coefficient with pH and negative charge of soil when compared with other heavy metal(loid)s. Based on the above results, it might be a good soil management to control pH with soil amendments such as lime and compost to reduce phytoavailability of heavy metal(loid)s in arable soil located near industrial complex.

We have constructed cDNA library from the larvae whole body of the firefly, Pyrocoelia rufa. Single direct partial sequencing of anonymous cDNA clones was performed to obtain genetic information on the firefly, P. rufa, of which genetic information is currently not available. This expressed sequence tags (EST) analysis of the 54 clones (54%) showed significant homology to the known genes registered in GenBank. Of these clones, twenty-four were related to the known insect genes, but these clones were not matched to previously identified firefly genes. Putative functional categories of these clones showed that the next abundant genes were associated with energy metabolism.
Life cycle assessment(LCA) is acknowledged as a valuable tool to quantify the environment impact of agricultural practice as well as final product(biodiesel) considering whole life cycle of the target product. As a preliminary research of LCA study for rapeseed(Brassica napus L.) biodiesel, the methodological issues which have to be regarded with high priority were dealt with. No life cycle inventory(LCI) based on local data are currently available for LCA of rapeseed cultivation, crushing, and conversion to rapeseed methyl ester(RME) in Korea. In this paper, the life cycle of rapeseed and methodological factors which have to be measured for building LCI of each process are provided and discussed, which are including seed, fertilizer, energy use in rapeseed cultivation environment; and crushing, RME conversion, and transportation in biodiesel production.

This paper presents analytical methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening and size effects. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. Size effect has been accounted for by modifying the Paris law, leading to a size adjusted Paris law, which gives crack length increment per cycle as a power function of the amplitude of a size adjusted stress intensity factor (SIF). Details of tension softening effects and size effect in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction have been presented. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete beams under constant amplitude loading. The predicted remaining life values with the combination of tension softening & size effects are in close agreement with the corresponding experimental values available in the literature for all the tension softening models.

The vegetable brassicas are an important crop worldwide and are of significant commercial value. In order to ensure our targets for food security are met it is important that these crops are continually improved to increase sustainability of production, increase nutritional quality and reduce waste. Development of resistances against both biotic and abiotic stress are recognised as being key. Plant breeding plays a vital role in addressing these issues through the development of new and improved varieties. This continued improvement is becoming evermore dependent on our ability to identify and introgress beneficial alleles from 'exotic' germplasm into elite breeding material. Increasingly, more diverse germplasm such as those found in genebanks is being screened for benificial allelic variation, however, plant breeders often find it difficult to make use of such material due to the time required to remove undesirable characteristics from progeny due to linkage drag. This article describes how we have attempted to overcome this and develop resources that make the diversity available within the $Brassica$$oleracea$ genepool more accessible.
purpose: This study aims to understand the relationship between stress in college life, vulnerability to depression, and smartphone overuse among undergraduate students majoring in public health. Methods: The subjects of the study were 320 students who were selected through convenience sampling from the department of emergency medical technology, physical therapy, and public health and administration attending G University in Gwangju. The study was carried out from October 22 to 26, 2012. For final analysis, 266 copies were used. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS WIN 12.0. Results: Excessive use of smartphones had a negative effect on stress in college life and vulnerability to depression. The stress of college life had an effect on students' sense of value, their friends of the same sex, and job. Depressive vulnerability had an effect on a students' dependency. Conclusion: For the prevention of smartphone overuse, programs to prevent college life stress and vulnerability to depression should be developed. Counselling programs for the groups should be made available to the students.

Welding structures are designed to endure its expected life. The most important factors are life. Especially on welded structure, fatigue strength is critical. So this study performed a research on Box and T shape weldment specimen to examine the influence of welding type. In this experiment, the results indicate Box shape was available in more than T shape. Fatigue tests were performed to evaluate the fatigue strength of the both as-welded and statically pre-loaded specimens by 3 point bending load. Fatigue life can be improved by using Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT) effect. Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT) is excellent for eliminating the tensile residual stresses and generating compressive residual stresses which elevate fatigue strength of welded structures. Also, this shows that welding part has better fatigue life and welding was performed well. In this study, to evaluate the Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT) effect, for welding structure, the experiment was conducted at various levels of stress range between 100MPa and 500MPa. From the test results, it was indicated that fatigue performance was improving by Ultrasonic Impact Treatment(UIT)

Thirty-five available feeds were fermented in vitro in order to investigate their soluble total organic carbon (TOCs) and methane ($CH_4$) production rate. A fermentation reactor was designed to capture the $CH_4$ gas emitted and to collect liquor from the reactor during in vitro fermentation. The results showed that $CH_4$ production rate greatly varied among feeds with different ingredients. The lowest $CH_4$-producing feeds were corn gluten feed, brewer's grain, and orchard grass among the energy, protein, and forage feed groups, respectively. Significant differences (p<0.05) were found in digestibility, soluble total organic carbon (TOCs), and $CH_4$ emissions among feeds, during 48 h of in vitro fermentation. Digestibility and TOCs was not found to be related due to different fermentation pattern of each but TOCs production was directly proportional to $CH_4$ production (y = 0.0076x, $r^2$ = 0.83). From this in vitro study, TOCs production could be used as an indirect index for estimation of $CH_4$ emission from feed ingredients.

The peptide methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msrs) are enzymes that catalyze the reduction of methionine sulfoxide back to methionine. Because of two enantiomers of methionine sulfoxide (S and R forms), this reduction reaction is carried out by two structurally unrelated classes of enzymes, MsrA (E.C. 1.8.4.11) and MsrB (E.C. 1.8.4.12). Whereas MsrA has been well characterized structurally and functionally, little information on MsrB is available. The recombinant MsrB from Bacillus subtilis has been purified and crystallized by the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion method, and the functional and structural features of MsrB have been elucidated. The crystals belong to the trigonal space group P3, with unit-cell parameters a=b=136.096, $c=61.918{\AA}$, and diffracted to $2.5{\AA}$ resolution using a synchrotron-radiation source at Pohang Light Source. The asymmetric unit contains six subunits of MsrB with a crystal volume per protein mass $(V_M)\;of\;3.37{\AA}^3\;Da^{-1}$ and a solvent content of 63.5%.

Because of the potential negative influence on their hosts, ecto-parasites are of prime importance to numerous species. Ticks are among these, distributed worldwide, and potentially transmitting diseases while sucking blood of diverse hosts. The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura Elliot, 1871) is the only felid left in the Republic of Korea following widespread anthropogenic disturbances that have resulted in the extinction of both Panthera species: the Siberian tiger(Panthera tigris altaica Temminck, 1844) and Amur leopard (P. pardus orientalis(Schlegel, 1857)). This study identifies ticks collected from a roadkill leopard cat retrieved in Seosan area in the Republic of Korea. Two ticks attached to the facial area of the carcass were identified as Japanese hard ticks, Ixodes nipponensis, based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I. The matching sample was from Japan with 99.7% similarities, and the only available sequence on GenBank. This study reconfirms that I. nipponensis parasitizes the endangered leopard cat P. bengalensis euptilura.
