Chiropractic is very similar to Oriental Medicine in philosophy on the cause of diseases and in utilization of spinal articulations for diagnosis and treatment. In this paper the spinal area used to treat liver dysfunction in S.O.T. technique, one of chiropractic techniques, was compared to the acupncture points used to cure the same conditions. Because both Oriental medicine and Chiropractic are dealing with autonomic nervous system in regulating abnormal conditions, also the innervation of spinal nerves to those areas was checked. The spinal area that S.O.T. technique utilizes to correct liver dysfunction is transverse processes of T8, which corresponds to B16. Acupncture points from this level down to T12/L1, which are B16, B17, B18, B19, B20, B21, B45, B46, B47, B48, B49, B50, GV6, GV7, GV8 and GV9, all have been applied to control liver function. Apparent discrepency exists in therapeutic areas for liver malfunction between the two natural healing arts. According to the neurology texts, liver is innervated by sympathetic fibers from the 7th-10th thoracic segments and by parasympathetic fibers from vagus nerve. Sympathetic afferent nerves from the liver reach the 7th-12th thoracic spinal cord segments. It can be said all the 7th-12th thoracic spinal cord segments are related to liver function. Therefore the areas used for liver dysfunction in both natural medicine are appropriately selected. However, B16, the Oriental medical equivalent of the main spinal area which is used for lowered liver function in C.M.R.T. Technique, is not utilized as frequent as in Oriental medicine.

Background : There are findings indicating that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is affected negatively in atopic dermatitis (AD). Heart rate variability (HRV) is a tool to examine ANS. But, studies investigation the relationship between AD and HRV is rare. Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between atopic dermatitis severity and HRV and to find out the role of ANS in AD. Methods : Retrospective chart review was performed. The Severity Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index and HRV parameter was investigated and analyzed. Results : There were 55 patients (25males and 30 females) who met the criteria. Objective SCORAD had significant positive correlation with HRT and Subjective SCORAD had significant negative correlation with SDNN, TP and VLF. Intensity item of SCORAD index had negative correlation with most HRV parameters, but TP, LF and LF/HF ratio had significant positive correlation with dryness. Conclusion : This study supports the concept that atopic dermatitis is a stress-responsive disorder and involves autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
Purpose: Neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS) is the most frequent cause of fainting during adolescence. Inappropriate cardiovascular autonomic control may be responsible for this clinical event. The head-up tilt test has been considered a diagnostic standard, but it is cumbersome and has a high false-positive rate. We performed a study to evaluate whether P-wave dispersion (PWD) could be a useful electrocardiographic parameter of cardiac autonomic dysfunction in children with NCS. Methods: Fifty-four patients with NCS (28 boys and 26 girls; mean age, $12.3{\pm}1.4$ years) and 55 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. PWD was obtained as the difference between maximum and minimum durations of the P wave on standard 12-lead electrocardiography in all patients and controls Results: The value of PWD was significantly higher in the syncope group than in the control group ($69.7{\pm}19.6$ msec vs. $45.5{\pm}17.1$ msec, respectively; P<0.001). The minimum duration of P wave was shorter in the syncope group than in the control group ($43.8{\pm}16.8$ msec vs. $53.5{\pm}10.7$ msec, respectively; P<0.001). Left atrial volume was not different between the groups on transthoracic echocardiography. Conclusion: PWD on echocardiography could be used as a clinical parameter in patients with NCS.
Objectives: To characterize autonomic dysfunction in patients with Cold hypersensitivity, their heart rate variability(HRV) were measured and analyzed with cold hypersensitivity patients, compared with those of normal population. Methods: We studied 56 patients visiting Gangnam Kyung-hee korean hospital from 1st January 2010 to 31th December 2010. Heart rate variability were obtained from 28 female patients who suffer from cold hypersensitivity and 28 healthy female controls in resting state. We studied the difference of Heart rate variability between two groups by Independent T-test using SPSS for windows(version 17.0). Results: Standard deviation of NN interval(SDNN), total power(TP), Very low frequency(VLF) in patients with cold hypersensitivity were significantly different with those of controls. While no significant differences were observed in square root of mean squared differences of successive NN intervals (RMSSD), low frequency (LF) and high frequency(HF). Conclusions: The decreased values of heart rate variability(HRV) study means that they may have some kinds of imbalance in autonomic nervous system in cold hypersensitivity patients. heart rate variabiliry(HRV) study might be a tool of diagnosis and predictors in cold hypersensitivity patients.

Background and Purpose The increasing evidence for neurally mediated cardiac damage and sudden death has focused attention on the central autonomic control of cardiac function. Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability(HRV) can detect autonomic consequences of stroke. We performed power spectral analysis of heart rate variability from 24-hour holter recording to identify cerebral hemispheric lateralization and gender effect in cardiac autonomic control. Methods Data were obtained from 24-hour holter recordings in 30 consecutive patients with hemispheric brain infarction in the subacute phase. We analysed the time domain and frequency domain measures of HRV and ST segment by hemispheric lateralization and Gender. Results ST segment was depressed in women compared with man. There was no statistically significant differences between right and left hemisphere stroke patients in any standard index of HRV and ST segment changes. Conclusions These data are partial consistent with evidence from the recent literature that two cerebral hemispheres and gender have a differential influence on the nature and severity of cardiac dysfunction. We think the prospective and definite study was necessary.
Objectives : To study autonomic nervous system dysfunction of Low Back Pain(LBP) patients, using spectral analysis of Heart Rate Variability(HRV). Methods : HRV of 190 patients was measured and seperated into two groups, those with LBP(n=95) and healthy controls(n=95). HRV was measured by SA-6000(Medicore, Korea) for 5 minutes after 5 minutes' resting. Results : 1. Mean heart rate(MHRT) of the experimental group was slightly higher than that of the control group, but did not show significant difference(P=0.428). The square root of the mean squared differences of successive normal-to-normal intervals(RMSSD), logarithmic very low frequency power(Ln VLF) and low frequency power/high frequency power ratio(LH/HF ratio) were not significantly low between experimental group and control group(P=0.16, 0.130, 0.537). 2. The standard deviation of all the normal-to-normal intervals(SDNN), logarithmic total power(Ln TP), logarithmic low frequency power(Ln LF) and logarithmic high frequency power(Ln HF) were significantly low between experimental group and control group(P=0.03, 0.005, 0.001, 0.007). 3. Ln LF of acute group was significantly low compared with those of chronic group(P= 0.039). Conclusions : This study suggests the activity and imbalance of autonomic nervous system in LBP is low. Also sympathetic nervous system of acute LBP is lower than that of chronic LBP. Further study of HRV related to LBP is needed in the clinical medicine.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate objectively measured physical activity (PA) in institutionalized older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to elucidate the influence of autonomic nervous function, salivary cortisol, and PA on cognitive functions based on neurovisceral integration model. Methods: Overall cognitive function was evaluated using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and executive function was evaluated using semantic verbal fluency test and clock drawing test. Actigraph for PA, HRV and sAA for autonomous function, and the geriatric depression scale for depression were used. Saliva specimens were collected in the morning for sAA and cortisol. Results: Ninety-eight older adults from four regional geriatric hospitals participated in the study. They took 4,499 steps per day on average. They spent 753.93 minutes and 23.12 minutes on average in sedentary and moderate-to-vigorous activity, respectively. In the multiple regression analysis, lower salivary cortisol level (β = - .33, p = .041) and greater step counts (β = .37, p = .029) significantly improved MMSE score. Greater step count (β = .27, p = .016) also exerted a significant influence on verbal fluency, and greater sAA (β= .35, p = .026) was significantly associated with a better clock drawing test result. Conclusion: Salivary cortisol, sAA and physical activity were significantly associated with cognitive functions. To prevent older adults from developing dementia, strategies are needed to increase their overall PA amount by decreasing sedentary time and to decrease salivary cortisol for cognitive function, and to maintain their sympathetic nervous activity for executive function.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of acute respiratory training feedback upon a change on HRV-Autonomic nervous system in middle-aged women. The research subjects were totally 24 middle-aged women(40-60 years old), were randomly allocated 12 people to the respiratory training group and 12 people to the control group, and then were carried out the acute respiratory training. The feedback exercise in the respiratory training group was conducted for totally 15 minutes. Following the 10-minute breath awareness training according to the expert's guidance, the 5-minute autonomous breathing exercise was implemented. The data analysis was carried out Repeated Measures ANOVA with SPSS WIN 20.0. The conclusions that were obtained through this are as follows. The middle-aged women got significantly higher in SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF after the acute respiratory training. Compared to the control group. the respiratory training group was indicated to have gotten higher significantly in SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF. Mean HR and LF/HF were not shown a significant difference in both the main effect of group & period and the interaction effect of group & period. Above of a result the acute respiratory training feedback is effective for SDNN, RMSSD, sympathetic activity, parasympathetic activity in the middle-aged women. Thereby, the respiratory training program improves autonomic nervous system, being considered to be possibly expected the effective value of exercise intervention available for relieving stress and recovering autonomic dysfunction in the middle-aged women.

Thermography is a diagnostic procedures that measures infrared energy emitted by the skin. Thermography detects body temperature change which are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. It does show the thermal dysfunction that correlates closely with pain syndromes as well as normalization when the healing process takes place. Experienced clinical interpretation of the thermal pattern is necessary to diagnose and establish causation. Thermography is useful in the diagnosis of painful conditions such as herniated disc diseases, myofascial syndrome, myositis, musculoligamentous injury, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, athretic injuries, vascular diseases, arthritis, inflammation and breast tumors.
Background: Type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) is an emerging global pandemic which is associated with lots of co-morbidities and reported vascular dysfunctions. T2DM associated vascular dysfunctions leads to vasculopathy in the form of altered peripheral vascular dynamics. Cold stress test (CST) is a reliable sympathetic reactivity test used for assessing vascular dysfunctions. In this study we are trying to quantify vascular dysfunctions in T2DM patients non invasively by various parameters of photoplethysmography (PPG) of cold stress test. Methods: Case control study had done in referral health center AIIMS, Raipur. Parameters are recorded by finger-PPG before, during and after CST (1 min) in 2 groups, control (n = 20 healthy volunteers) and case (n = 20 diagnosed T2DM patients). Results: Due to cold stress, PPG parameter peak amplitude was significantly decreased in both healthy and T2DM groups (p <0.001 and p <0.001, respectively). However, recovery trend of amplitude was significantly slow in T2DM compared to healthy subjects. Another PPG parameter peak to peak interval was significantly higher in healthy group compared to T2DM patients. Conclusions: This study showed that T2DM patients has significant deranged pulse volume parameters like amplitude and peak to peak interval can be used to objectively quantify the vasculopathy in T2DM patients by using sympathetic reactivity to cold stress.
