In this paper, we analyze the mean queuing delay of selective-repeat automatic repeat request (SR-ARQ) protocol with the finite retransmission persistence. The retransmission persistence means the willingness of the protocol to retransmit a lost (or corrupted) packet to ensure reliable packet delivery across a lossy link. According to the retransmission persistence, SR-ARQ protocols have a different performance in terms of both packet delay and link reliability. So far, however, there is no serious study in the effect of the retransmission persistence on the SR-ARQ performance. We present a simple M/G/1 queuing model for the SR-ARQ protocol with the finite retransmission persistence by using the ideal SR-ARQ approximation. The mean queuing delay is obtained from the queuing model and verified its accuracy through the simulation results using the OPNET simulator. Both the analytical predictions and simulation results clearly show the effect of retransmission persistence on the queuing delay of the SR-ARQ protocol in various network conditions: packet loss rate and traffic condition over a wireless link.

WiBro is a wireless mobile communication system which supports a high data rate and high mobility in anywhere and anytime. Although WiBro system provides multimedia service including data, audio and video services, customers require better service quality in WiBro system. But, many researches have theoretically evaluated the performance of WiBro system without systematic studies by simulation. Therefore, in this paper, we evaluate a performance of WiBro system using OPNET simulator. We analyze system performance according to various modulation and coding schemes, and propose Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) profile to support quality of services for user requirements. Also we evaluate the performance of WiBro system using AMC and Hybrid-Automatic Repeat Request (H-ARQ) technologies, and confirm that the proposed AMC profile can be applied to WiBro system with high performance.

This paper proposes a cross-layer design combining adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with truncated hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for wireless multicast transmission, in order to increase the spectral efficiency while meeting the target quality-of-service (QoS). In the design, we provide the selection criterion of AMC so as to satisfy the target packet error rate (PER) of all users when the multicast data is received through the common channel and the number of retransmission is limited by the delay constraint of the service. The analytically derived results show that the cross-layer design using HARQ provides a better spectral efficiency than the AMC without HARQ by allowing retransmission and code combining. It is also observed that the design for multicast outperforms that for unicast in the mid to high signal-to-noise ratio region.

Since error compensation schemes guaranteeing high reliability are required in wireless communication systems for the transmission of the large amount of data, as an efficient error compensation scheme the turbo HARQ scheme combining automatic repeat request and turbo coding has been studied in many places in the literature. In the case of conventional turbo HARQ schemes, the transmitter recognizing NAK signals repetitively sends the whole unit packet to the receiver although the received packet can be partially correctable. Through two successive processes, selection of uncorrectable error data and retransmission of only the relevant parts of the information data, transmission efficiency can be improved. In this paper, we present an error data selection criterion for retransmission using the sign transitions of A Posteriori values and propose a tubo HARQ scheme based on the partial retransmission technique. Through a computer simulation, we show and analyze the performance of the proposed scheme with transmission efficiency.

A simple AMC (Adaptive Modulation and Coding) technique using ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) for a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) system is proposed which does not require the additional feedback. In addition, the proposed AMC technique is different from the conventional technique in the aspect of considering the MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) level from the previous packet. The proposed technique can discard fewer amounts of unsuitable packets than the conventional technique. In the proposed system not only same rate control method for transmit antennas but also individual rate control method can be applied. The performance of the proposed technique is verified under a MIMO-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system based on WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), IEEE 802.11a. The results of the computer simulation show that a MIMO system with the proposed technique achieves higher throughput than one with a fixed transmission rate.

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) needs error recovery and flow control schemes to support reliable multicast protocol. Limited wireless bandwidth, as well as queuing losses caused by the asymmetric wired/wireless interactions, demands more effective approaches for reducing packet losses. Moreover, since the wireless channel is a shared broadcast medium, if sender receives feedback information simultaneously from several receivers, the feedback delays data frame transmission of forward direction by introducing channel congestion and burden at the sender. Therefore, it is important to minimize the amount of feedback information from receivers. In this paper, we propose an ARS(Adaptive Redundancy Scheme) that combines FEC(Forward Error Correction) using channel state estimation and ARQ(Automatic Repeat Request) both to reduce the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and to guarantee high data reliability in a WLAN multicast environment. Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by means of analysis and simulations in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. The results show that the proposed scheme reduces the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and guarantees high data reliability, while keeping throughput efficiency similarly with the conventional FEC and ARQ scheme.

In this paper, we introduce the low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subframe reordering scheme for achieving equal combined power allocation in type I hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) systems and analyze the performance improvement by using the channel capacity. Also, it is confirmed that the layered decoding for subframe reordering scheme in H-ARQ systems gives faster convergence speed. It is verified from numerical analysis that a subframe reordering pattern having larger channel capacity shows better bit error rate (BER) performance. Therefore the subframe reordering pattern achieving equal combined power allocation for each subframe maximizes the channel capacity and outperforms other subframe reordering patterns. Also, it is shown that the subframe reordering scheme for achieving equal combined power allocation gives better performance than the conventional Chase combining scheme without increasing the decoding complexity.

In this paper, the hybrid ARQ scheme, which is incorporated the selective-repeat ARQ system with the finite receiver buffer and the single-error-correcting and double-error-detecting(63.56) cyclic Hamming code system, has been investigated. As a result of simulation, the proposed hybrid ARQ scheme shows that that throughput efficiencies are improved by one error correction, and that the reversed codewords due to retransmission are delivered to the user in order by means of detecting two errors. The hybrid ARQ scheme significantly outperforms the FEC or the ideal selective-repeat ARQ system in the respect of throughput and reliability, especially when the channel error rate is approximately in the range from $10^{-2}$~$10^{-3}$.
Severe energy constraints and the low power consumption require the significance of the energy efficient error control mechanisms in wireless sensor network (WSN). In this paper, an automatic repeat request (ARQ) methodology for the analysis of error control schemes in WSN is presented such that the effects of packet length, the modulation scheme and the interference effect of the wireless channel are investigated. Moreover, an analyis of ARQ error control is provided by considering two major architectures for wireless sensor network, i.e., Mica2 and MicaZ sensor nodes. And the throughput performance of WSN with asynchronous FSK signal and DSSS-OQPSK signal with selective repeat ARQ scheme are analyzed in multiple interference environment, and the probability of receiving a correct bit and packet from target node to sink node is evaluated as a function of the channel parameter, the number of wireless sensor node, and the spreading factor.
