  • Recently, traceability systems are introduced as a new food safety information system. To trace food products efficiently, they must have an automatic identification capability at the individual product level. This capability can be gained through RFID technology. But there is not yet any performance evaluation tool on RFID-based traceability systems (RFID-TS). This study developed an evaluation tool of RFID-TS. To develop the tool, this study considered the objective and the components of RFID-TS as their performance constructs. According to Churchill's paradigm, the tool was established through two stages. The final evaluation tool consisted of four constructs (risk, operational benefits, IS (information system), and network) and nine sub-constructs. Among the four constructs, risk and IS were found as the most important performance constructs through regression analysis. Among the nine sub-constructs, service (which belonged to the IS construct) and economic risk (which belonged to the risk construct) were found as the most important performance sub-constructs.

  • The automation of production process is actively expanding for the purpose of the cost reduction and quality assurance. Among these, automatic tracking of the product along the whole process of the production is also important topic. Typically this is done by adopting OCR technology. Conventional OCR technology operates well on the rather good quality of the image like as printed characters on the paper. In industrial application, IDs are marked on the metal surface, and this cause the height difference between background material and character. Illumination systems that guarantee an image with good quality may be a solution, but it is rather difficult to design such an illumination system. This paper proposes an algorithm for the recognition of vehicle's ID characters using edge projection and PCA (Principal Component Analysis). Proposed algorithm robustly operates under illumination change using the same parameters. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

  • The Impact Echo method can be used to measure the thickness of concrete plate like structures. Measurements are based on the identification of a clear thickness resonance frequency which can be difficult in very thick or highly attenuative plates. In this study the detectability of the measured resonant frequency is enhanced by time domain summation of signals with different source receiver spacing. The proposed method is based on the spatial and temporal properties of the first higher symmetric zero group velocity Lamb mode (S1-ZGV) which are described in detail. No application dependent tuning or filtering is needed which makes the method robust and suitable for implementation in automatic IE thickness measurements. The proposed technique is exemplified with numerical data and field data from a thick concrete wall and a highly attenuative asphalt concrete layer.

  • The purpose of this study is to find suitable probability distribution function of complex distribution data like multimodal. Normal distribution is broadly used to assume probability distribution function. However, complex distribution data like multimodal are very hard to be estimated by using normal distribution function only, and there might be errors when other distribution functions including normal distribution function are used. In this study, we experimented to find fit probability distribution function in multimodal area, by using AIS(Automatic Identification System) observation data gathered in Mokpo port for a year of 2013. By using chi-squared statistic, gaussian mixture model(GMM) is the fittest model rather than other distribution functions, such as extreme value, generalized extreme value, logistic, and normal distribution. GMM was found to the fit model regard to multimodal data of maritime traffic flow distribution. Probability density function for collision probability and traffic flow distribution will be calculated much precisely in the future.

  • The goal of this project is to achieve an accurate segmentation of the pulmonary tumors besides shortening the time and increasing the accuracy. Here, improved region growing (IRG) algorithm is introduced in order to segment the lung tumor with a sufficient accuracy in a shorter time compared to the other basics methods. This comprehensive algorithm was applied on 4 patients CT images and the results of the various steps on segmentation improvement shown 98% accuracy as compared to the basic algorithm. The combination of "multipoint growth start" produced a desirable outcome in accurately bounding the tumor. The proposed algorithm improved tumor identification by less than 13% along with a sufficient percentage of compliance accuracy.

  • In this study, the automatic tracking algorithm tracing a human face is proposed by using YCbCr color coordinated information and its thermal properties expressed in terms of thermal indexes in an infra-red image. The facial candidates are separately estimated in CbCr color and infra-red domain, respectively with applying the morphological image processing operations and the geometrical shape measures for fitting the elliptical features of a human face. The identification of a true face is accomplished by logical 'AND' operation between the refined image in CbCr color and infra-red domain.

  • In this paper, a fast thinning method for fingerprint image by separating end and bifurcation region is proposed. To detect feature points in automatic fingerprint identification system, thinning of fingerprint is essential. The end and bifurcation regions in ridge line are separated by means of run-length coding, and parallel thinning method is applied to the separated regions. The rest parts except the end and bifurcation regions are processed by connecting center points of each run. The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated by CPU processing time and thinness measurement. By the experimental results, the proposed method is fast and has high thinness value.

  • This paper presents an approach to building multi-input and single-output fuzzy models for nonlinear data-based systems. Such a model is composed of fuzzy rules, and its output is inferred by simplified reasoning. Optimal structure and membership parameters for a fuzzy model are automatically and simultaneously identified by GA(Genetic Algorithm). Numerical examples are provided to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Comparison shows that the suggested approach can produce a fuzzy model with higher accuracy and a smaller number of fuzzy rules than the ones achieved previously in other methods.
