Overview of the Leading Environmental Specimen Banks in the World and Future Challenges of the National Environmental Specimen Bank in Korea (선진국 환경시료은행의 특성 분석을 통한 국가환경시료은행의 발전방안)

  • The ESBs (Environmental Specimen Banks) have monitoring functions for the contemporary environmental qualities and also offer the future generation tangible information on the past environment by preserving the specimens. This entails the sampling of the representative specimen for each distinctive ecosystem, which is performed under a strict and stipulated procedure and a condition that does not allow any change in the component so that a retrospective analysis can be readily done even in the distant future. It has been more than 30 years that some developing countries started collecting a broad spectrum of specimens to vindicate the effectiveness of an environmental policy and to monitor the long-term variations of background concentrations of environmental pollutants. Though being late, the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Korea, has successfully launched the National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) in 2009 equipped with its state-of-the-art automated cryogenic tanks. Since then, the researchers at the NESB have been doing their best to excel the existing ESBs around the world by learning and improving the expertise. To do so, they conducted a pilot study for developing and testing their own Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) based on the analysis of the examples of the other ESBs. The problems from the pilot study had been reviewed to improve the SOP to meet the requirements for an ESB, that is to say, preserving representative environmental specimens in cryogenic condition and enhancing the analytical method. Furthermore, they also need to prepare themselves to address the future challenges by providing some additional functions, which makes it distinguishable from the other ESBs. If successful, this will be a step further to be recognized as a full-fledged member of the ESB society of the world.

A Study on Design Automation of Cooling Channels in Hot Form Press Die Based on CATIA CAD System (CATIA CAD 시스템 기반 핫폼금형의 냉각수로 설계 자동화에 관한 연구)

  • This paper focuses on the development of a support system that can rapidly generate the design data of a hot-form die with cooling channels, commonly known as hot stamping technology. We propose a new process for designing hot-form dies based on our (automated) system, whose main features are derived from the analysis of the design requirements and design process in the current industry. Our design support system consists of two modules, which allow for the generation of a 3D geometry model and its 2D drawings. The module for 3D modeling automation is implemented as a type of CATIA template model based on CATIA V5 Knowledgeware. This module automatically creates a 3D model of a hot-form die, including the cooling channels, that depends on the shape of the forming surface and the number of STEELs (subsets of die product) and cooling channels. It also allows for both the editing of the positions and orientations of the cooling channels and testing for the purpose of satisfying the constraints on the distance between the forming surface and cooling channels. Another module for the auto-generation of the 2D drawings is being developed as a plug-in using CAA (CATIA SDK) and Visual C++. Our system was evaluated using the S/W test based on a user defined scenario. As a result, it was shown that it can generate a 3D model of a hot form die and its 2D drawings with hole tables about 29 times faster than the conventional manual method without any design errors.

  • This paper is a study on the development of equipment system to obtain data on stability in excavation of sharp curve section of Shield TBM. Shield TBM equipment is being used a lot recently for tunnel excavation. Excavation may result in inevitable detours by buildings above the ground or existing underground structures. Preconstruction simulation is required to verify the stability of the construction in case of this. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an automated control system through the development of this equipment system and conduct simulation through simulation of excavation model in the sharp curve section. A system shall be developed to control the left and right angles and thrust of the equipment, and to view data on the earth pressure and propulsion pressure of the equipment in real time during excavation. With this system, the necessary data can be collected for field testing through excavation method and excavation simulation by angle. It is expected that it will be very useful in assessing the actual Shield TBM by conducting a scale-down model experiment.

A Red Ginseng Internal Measurement System Using Back-Projection (Back-Projection을 활용한 홍삼 내부 측정 시스템)

  • This study deals with internal state and tissue density analysis methods for red ginseng grade determination. For internal measurement of red ginseng, there have been various studies on nondestructive testing methods since the 1990s, It was difficult to grasp the most important inner hole and inside whites in the grading. So in this study, we developed a closed capturing device for infra-red illumination environment, and developed an internal measurement system that can detect the presence and diameter of inner hole and inside whites. Made devices consisted of infrared lights with a high transmission rate of red ginseng in 920 nanometer wave band, a infra-red camera and a Y axis actuator with a red ginseng automatically controlled focus on the camera. The proposed algorithm performs an auto-focus system on the Y-axis actuator to automatically adjust the sharp focus of the object according to the size and thickness. Then red ginseng is rotated $360^{\circ}$ at $1^{\circ}$ intervals and 360 total images are acquired, and reconstructed as a sinogram through Radon transform and Back-projection algorithm was performed to acquire internal images of red ginseng. As a result of the algorithm, it was possible to acquire internal cross-sectional image regardless of the thickness and shape of red ginseng. In the future, if more than 10,000 different shapes and sizes of red ginseng internal cross-sectional image are acquired and the classification criterion is applied, it can be used as a reliable automated ginseng grade automatic measurement method.

A High Performance License Plate Recognition System (고속처리 자동차 번호판 인식시스템)

  • This Paper describes algorithm to extract license plates in vehicle images. Conventional methods perform preprocessing on the entire vehicle image to produce the edge image and binarize it. Hough transform is applied to the binary image to find horizontal and vertical lines, and the license plate area is extracted using the characteristics of license plates. Problems with this approach are that real-time processing is not feasible due to long processing time and that the license plate area is not extracted when lighting is irregular such as at night or when the plate boundary does not show up in the image. This research uses the gray level transition characteristics of license plates to verify the digit area by examining the digit width and the level difference between the background area the digit area, and then extracts the plate area by testing the distance between the verified digits. This research solves the problem of failure in extracting the license plates due to degraded plate boundary as in the conventional methods and resolves the problem of the time requirement by processing the real time such that practical application is possible. This paper Presents a power automated license plate recognition system, which is able to read license numbers of cars, even under circumstances, which are far from ideal. In a real-life test, the percentage of rejected plates wan 13%, whereas 0.4% of the plates were misclassified. Suggestions for further improvements are given.

Sensor Fault Detection Scheme based on Deep Learning and Support Vector Machine (딥 러닝 및 서포트 벡터 머신기반 센서 고장 검출 기법)

  • As machines have been automated in the field of industries in recent years, it is a paramount importance to manage and maintain the automation machines. When a fault occurs in sensors attached to the machine, the machine may malfunction and further, a huge damage will be caused in the process line. To prevent the situation, the fault of sensors should be monitored, diagnosed and classified in a proper way. In the paper, we propose a sensor fault detection scheme based on SVM and CNN to detect and classify typical sensor errors such as erratic, drift, hard-over, spike, and stuck faults. Time-domain statistical features are utilized for the learning and testing in the proposed scheme, and the genetic algorithm is utilized to select the subset of optimal features. To classify multiple sensor faults, a multi-layer SVM is utilized, and ensemble technique is used for CNN. As a result, the SVM that utilizes a subset of features selected by the genetic algorithm provides better performance than the SVM that utilizes all the features. However, the performance of CNN is superior to that of the SVM.

  • While the concept of Home Network is laying by and its interests are increasing by means of digitalizing of the information communication infrastructure, many efforts are in progress toward convenient lives. Moreover, as information household appliances which have a junction of connecting to the network are appearing over the past a few years, the demands against intellectual Home Services are increasing. In this paper, by being based upon Multimedia which is an essential factor for developing of various application services on ubiquitous computing environments, we suggest a simplified application model that could apply the information to the automated processing system after studying user's behavior patterns using authentication and access control for identity certification of users. In addition, we compared captured video images in the fixed range by pixel unit through some time and checked disorder of them. And that made safe of user certification as adopting self-developed certification method which was used 'Hash' algorism through salt function of 12 byte. In order to show the usefulness of this proposed model, we did some testing by emulator for control of information after construction for Intellectual Multimedia Server, which ubiquitous network is available on as a scheme so as to check out developed applications. According to experimental results, it is very reasonable to believe that we could extend various multimedia applications in our daily lives.

  • Parallel testing means ordering a number of tests at the same time so abnormalities in any of the tests can be found quickly and used in making the diagnosis. This is a good medical strategy to eliminate diseases and it is relatively inexpensive if all the tests are potential sources of information and performed on the same analyzer. In regression, the equation for the straight line is recast as y = bx + a. This change in terminology leads to confusion. Here a is the y-intercept or constant and b is the coefficient or slope of the line. A few more words of caution about regression - as in all of statistics there are certain assumptions: the x value is a true measure, both X and Y distributions are normal, and homoscedasticity, i.e., the variance of y is the same for each value of x. In this study the linearity classification made by different scientists were always in agreement. Typical examples of curves that were considered linear are presented in Fig. 1-5. Because these automated procedures values were usually within five percent of each other the curvature could be easily detected. The plot of the WBC, RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelet concentrations from approximately 74.4 to $0{\times}10^3/{\mu}L$ and $80.4-0{\times}10^3/{\mu}L$, $5.6-0{\times}10^6/{\mu}L$ and $6.1-0{\times}1106/{\mu}L$, 18.3-0 g/dL and 19.0-0 g/dL, 54.1-0% and 56.8-0% and 642.0 to $0.03{\times}10^3{\mu}L$ and $754.0-0{\times}10^3/{\mu}L$ on the ADVIA 2120 C Versus and A and B typical of an acceptable linear study as shown in Fig. 1-5. The grand mean of R2, intercept and slope is 0.99898, 0.99459 and 1.54626.

A Novel Method for Automated Honeycomb Segmentation in HRCT Using Pathology-specific Morphological Analysis (병리특이적 형태분석 기법을 이용한 HRCT 영상에서의 새로운 봉와양폐 자동 분할 방법)

  • Honeycombs are dense structures that small cysts, which generally have about 2~10 mm in diameter, are surrounded by the wall of fibrosis. When honeycomb is found in the patients, the incidence of acute exacerbation is generally very high. Thus, the observation and quantitative measurement of honeycomb are considered as a significant marker for clinical diagnosis. In this point of view, we propose an automatic segmentation method using morphological image processing and assessment of the degree of clustering techniques. Firstly, image noises were removed by the Gaussian filtering and then a morphological dilation method was applied to segment lung regions. Secondly, honeycomb cyst candidates were detected through the 8-neighborhood pixel exploration, and then non-cyst regions were removed using the region growing method and wall pattern testing. Lastly, final honeycomb regions were segmented through the extraction of dense regions which are consisted of two or more cysts using cluster analysis. The proposed method applied to 80 High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images and achieved a sensitivity of 89.4% and PPV (Positive Predictive Value) of 72.2%.

Infection Control in Pulmonary Function Laboratories in Domestic Hospitals (국내 의료기관의 폐기능검사실에서 감염관리 실태조사)

  • The global outbreak of COVID-19 has underscored the pressing need for robust infection control practices in pulmonary function laboratories (PFL). However, the existing guidelines and regulatory frameworks provided by relevant authorities in the country have revealed certain deficiencies in effectively addressing this significant public health crisis. This study surveyed the infection control regulations, disposable item usage, ventilation facilities, spatial separation, and the configuration of entrance doors in 51 domestic hospital facilities from Oct 1, 2021, to Nov 2, 2021. The survey findings revealed that while there was a relatively satisfactory adherence to airborne, droplet, and contact precautions with adequate awareness and utilization of personal protective equipment, the environmental disinfection practices exhibited a suboptimal performance rate of 39.22% per patient. Depending on the specific survey domains, substantial variations were observed in the utilization of disposable items (81.05%), ventilation systems (45.75%), dedicated testing spaces (80.39%), separation of administrative areas (15.69%), and the installation of automated doors (19.61%). This study not only highlights the paramount importance of infection control in PFLs within domestic medical institutions but also provides foundational data for developing and enhancing standardized guidelines that align with international benchmarks for infection control in these settings.
