  • Cat vocalizes to communicate with another and express their internal states. The vocal repertoire of the cat is wide and up to 21 different vocalizations have been described in the literatures. But it is more than probable that the repertoire contains more types of vocalizations. An ethogram was created in this paper describing the actual known vocalisations of the domestic cat based on an auditory classification. However, the audiogram allows also a visual classification which can increase the accuracy of vocalization differentiation. The classification can be risky as it is sometimes unclear if different types of vocalizations are produced in different environments or if a unique type of vocalization is used with variation in the acoustic parameters. As an example, isolation calls produced by kittens differ depending on the context. The environment has an important impact on the vocal behaviour and thus feral cats and pet cats vocalize differently. Pet cats are thus able to create an efficient communication with humans thanks to the flexibility of vocalisation behaviours. This review allowed us to create a simple model of the cat vocal repertory.

  • We compared the effectiveness of vasodilator therapy with histamine and stellate ganglion block(SGB) for the treatment of sudden sensoryneural hearing impairment retrospctively. 24 patients were treated with histamine and nicotinic acid(histamine group), and 30 patients were treated with SGB(SGB group). Corticosteroids and low molecular weight dextran($Rheomacrodex^{(R)}$) were given to all patients. The degree of hearing impairment and the evidence of improvement were checked with audiogram. 52.8%(10 out of l9 follow-up ckecked patients) of patients in histamine group and 56.7%(17 out of 30) of patients in SGB group had improved within three weeks of treatment, which means both histamine and SGB are equally effective. As a consequence, we concluded that SGB ia a good substitute for histamine as a vasodilator therapy for sudden sensoryneural hearing impairment with minimal complication, few absolute contraindications, and simple and safe technique.

  • Now a lot of antibiotics are available for daily clinical use. Streptomycin, above all them, is widely used because of its effects upon tuberculosis. Recently, however, the ototoxic effects of SM was noticed especially on the vestibular sensory organs, so called, SM deafness. The authors have clinically investigated the incidence of SM deafness of 198 cases of admission at Masan National Hospital for treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. The results obtained were follows; 1. The incidence of SM deafness was 30 cases (15.2%) of total 198 cases. 2. SM deafness had a tendency to increase according to amount of administrated SM dose. 3. The administration of SM 1.0 gm. daily (17.4%) resulted in more frequent incidence than that (2.9%) of 1.0gm. single dose, twice a week. 4. The complication due to SM administration was 59 cases (2.98%). Among them, tinnitus was the most frequent symptom recording 14 cases (46.7%). 5. SM deafness had a tendency to begin with high frequency and than progress gradually to speech range. 6. As concern of type of audiogram, gradual descending type (40.0%) and horizontal type(30.3%) were the most frequent.

  • The B$\'{e}$k$\'{e}$syaudiometry makes possible to determine not only hearing threshold but also assumption of recruit phenomenon. Additionally, it is helpful to investigate cause of hearing loss. In this paper, we describe a development of PC based B$\'{e}$k$\'{e}$syaudiometer which complies with ANSI standards and provides cost competitiveness. It dynamically produces sound having required frequency and sound pressure level and supports audiogram interface showing test result at realtime. To provide ANSI defined maximum sound level, an amplifier has been developed. We have been verified our system whether it conforms to ANSI standards.

  • Speech reception threshold is a base for word discrimination testing, but it also serves as a check for the reliability of pure tone audiogram. In order to investigate the correlation between SRT and PTA these tests were carried out in patients with conductive hearing loss and normal hearing, using Grason-Stadler 1702 Audiometer. The results were as follows; 1) The difference between the scores of SRT and PTA's was 2.4 dB with a range of -3.3 dB∼+8.3 dB in conductive hearing loss, and was 1.9 dB with a range of -6.7 dB∼+5 dB in normal hearing group. 2) The difference between the scores of SRT and each speech frequency of PTA was 6 dB at 500 Hz, 3 dB at 1,000 Hz and 8.8 dB at 2,000 Hz in conductive hearing loss, and 3 dB at 500Hz, 2 dB at 1,000Hz, and 5dB at 2,000Hz in normal hearing group.

  • Background: Compared with other chronic diseases, hearing loss is generally overlooked from the perspective of disease burden. However, hearing loss is emerging as an important issue in the current society. The objective of this study was to investigate disease burdens and marginal utilities associated with hearing loss and other chronic diseases. Methods: This study analyzed the cross-sectional data of 32,986 participants aged 19 years and older who completed the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys between 2009 and 2013. Additionally, this study used the pure tone audiometric test, European Quality of Life-Five Dimensions Questionnaire, and chronic disease status. The data were analyzed using a multiple linear regression method. Results: The data of 23,297 people who underwent a pure tone audiogram and completed the European Quality of Life-Five Dimensions Questionnaire were used in this analysis. The marginal utility of hearing loss ranked fifth among nine chronic diseases. The estimated loss of quality-adjusted life years associated with hearing loss was -93.69 years per 100,000 people, which is similar to other chronic diseases. Conclusion: This study assessed the marginal utilities and public burdens of hearing loss and eight chronic diseases in a South Korean population. Although the values may vary depending on country and race, this study may provide an indispensable foundation for more detailed studies on hearing loss.

  • Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features and the clinical factors associated with prognosis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in diabetic patients. Subjects and Methods: Forty-nine diabetic with unilateral SSNHL were retrospectively included. All patients received systemic high dose steroid therapy within one month after onset and had more than one month of follow-up audiogram. The basic characteristics of the patients, initial and follow-up audiograms, laboratory data, and methods of steroid treatment were collected. Results: Compared to reference values in healthy subjects, 79%, 55%, and 45% of the patients had higher values of mean neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), respectively. Older patients had significantly less degree of hearing loss, but they also had significantly worse hearing thresholds in the unaffected ear. After steroid treatment, less than half patients (47%) showed hearing recovery. Simultaneous intratympanic dexamethasone (ITD) injections with systemic steroid did not confer an additional hearing gain or an earlier recovery rate in diabetic patients with SSNHL. In the multivariate analysis, initial hearing thresholds of affected ear and timing of steroid treatment were significantly associated with hearing prognosis in diabetic patients with SSNHL. Conclusions: Diabetic patients with SSNHL tended to have increased NLR, LMR, and PLR, which are reported to be associated with microvascular angiopathy. Simultaneous ITD injections to improve hearing recovery in diabetic patients with SSNHL seems unnecessary.

  • Background and Objectives: To investigate the relationship between hearing impairment and alcohol drinking patterns in South Korean adults. Subjects and Methods: Data collection was performed by Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey from January 1 to December 31, 2012. Data analyses were performed from February 20 to March 3, 2018. Data from 3,860 adults 20 years of age or older without a history of malignancy or chronic otitis media in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey 2012 database who participated in the health questionnaires, and who had available results from otologic examinations that included pure tone audiogram, were included. Pure-tone average hearing thresholds were calculated at 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz. Hearing loss was defined as a pure-tone average >40 dB in one or both ears. The Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test was used to evaluate drinking statuses of subjects. Data were analyzed using the complex-sample χ2-test of independence and a complex-sample logistic regression analysis. Results: Of the 29,954,319 individuals in the weighted cross-sectional study population, 15,106,040 (50.4%) were men and 14,848,098 (49.6%) were women. A total of 8.1% of men and 7% of women had hearing impairment. The degrees of drinking with appropriate, risky, and hazardous drinking habits were 58.2, 32.1, and 9.7% among men; and 76.4, 12.5, and 11.1% among women, respectively. Among men, the odds ratio of hearing loss increased by 2.506 times when comparing hazardous and appropriate drinking (confidence interval, 1.083 to 5.800, p=0.002). Moderate alcohol consumption (≤2 drinks per day) was not protective for hearing in either group. Conclusions: As hazardous drinking tends to coexist with hearing impairment in men, appropriate prevention and intervention strategies should be emphasized. A longitudinal study to investigate harmful drinking and the mechanism of hearing loss should be performed.
