  • In this paper, new lossless coding method of spectral coefficients for audio codec is proposed. Conventional lossless coder uses Huffman coding utilizing the statistical characteristics of spectral coefficients, but does not provide the high coding efficiency due to its simple structure. To solve this limitation, new lossless coding scheme with better performance is proposed that consists of bit-plane transform and run-length coding. In the proposed scheme, the spectral coefficients are first transformed by bit-plane into 1-D bit-stream with better correlative properties, which is then coded intorun-length and is finally Huffman coded. In addition, the coding performance is further increased by applying the proposed bit-plane coding selectively to each group, after the entire frequency is divided into 3 groups. The performance of proposed coding scheme is measured in terms of theoretical number of bits based on the entropy, and shows at most 6% enhancement compared to that of conventional lossless coder used in AAC audio codec.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new audio fingerprint extraction method, based on Philips' music retrieval algorithm, which uses the energy difference of neighboring filter-bank and probabilistic characteristics of music. Since Philips method uses too many filter-banks in limited frequency band, it may cause audio fingerprints to be highly sensitive to additive noises and to have too high correlation between neighboring bands. The proposed method improves robustness to noises by reducing the number of filter-banks while it maintains the discriminative power by representing the energy difference of bands with 2 bits where the quantization levels are determined by probabilistic characteristics. The correlation which exists among 4 different levels in 2 bits is not only utilized in similarity measurement. but also in efficient reduction of searching area. Experiments show that the proposed method is not only more robust to various environmental noises (street, department, car, office, and restaurant), but also takes less time for database search than Philips in the case where music is highly degraded.

  • In television stereo system, to produce the sound image for spatial impression is too difficult because of the narrow distence between two speakers. A method of widening the sound image using precedence effect was introduced but it didn't work effectively in low frequency band. In this paper, we propose a new method to produce an expanded sound image in full band of audio requency in band sound is expanded by phase shifting method and a higher frequency band sound is expanded by reflection. In simulation and experiment, the proposed system guarantees useful effect of sound image expansion in television stereo system.

  • Increase in the number of older people due to demographic changes poses great challenges to the social healthcare systems both in the Western and as well as in the Eastern countries. Support for older people by formal care givers leads to enormous temporal and personal efforts. Therefore, one of the most important goals is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of today's care. This can be achieved by the use of assistive technologies. These technologies are able to increase the safety of patients or to reduce the time needed for tasks that do not relate to direct interaction between the care giver and the patient. Motivated by this goal, this contribution focuses on applications of acoustic technologies to support users and care givers in ambient assisted living (AAL) scenarios. Acoustic sensors are small, unobtrusive and can be added to already existing care or living environments easily. The information gathered by the acoustic sensors can be analyzed to calculate the position of the user by localization and the context by detection and classification of acoustic events in the captured acoustic signal. By doing this, possibly dangerous situations like falls, screams or an increased amount of coughs can be detected and appropriate actions can be initialized by an intelligent autonomous system for the acoustic monitoring of older persons. The proposed system is able to reduce the false alarm rate compared to other existing and commercially available approaches that basically rely only on the acoustic level. This is due to the fact that it explicitly distinguishes between the various acoustic events and provides information on the type of emergency that has taken place. Furthermore, the position of the acoustic event can be determined as contextual information by the system that uses only the acoustic signal. By this, the position of the user is known even if she or he does not wear a localization device such as a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag.

  • This paper describes a new algorithm for encoding spectral shape and envelope in the generic mode of G.718 super-wide band (SWB). In the G.718 SWB coder, generic mode coding and sinusoidal enhancement are used for the quantization of modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT)-based parameters in the high frequency band. In the generic mode, the high frequency band is divided into sub-bands and for every sub-band the most similar match with the selected similarity criteria is searched from the coded and envelope normalized wideband content. In order to improve the quantization scheme in high frequency region of speech/audio signals, the modified generic mode by the improvement of the generic mode in G.718 SWB is proposed. In the proposed generic mode, perceptual vector quantization of spectral envelopes and the resolution increase for spectral copy are used. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in terms of objective quality. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm increases the quality of sounds significantly.

  • Phase control methods are used to expand the sound image in general AV system. However, these methods are effective only to the signal under 1kHz, and the listener must be located in front center of the speaker system. In this paper, we realize the realtime processing system in which phase shifting method is dominant at low frequency and precedence effect is dominant at high frequency. Two sound cards are used to process the audio signal in realtime with 16 bits stereo channel of 44.1 kHz sampling frequency. And the analog circuit is designed to process the phase shifting. In experiments the usefulness of the proposed stereo system is confirmed.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the acoustic characteristics of sexy voice. In this study, we measured acoustic parameters (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and nasalance) of a sustained vowel sound produced by 40 actors (20 males and 20 females) and 40 non-actors (20 males and 20 females). Digital audio recordings were made in the sustained vowel |a| for acoustic analyses using Praat (version 4.1.9) and Nasal View (version 4.5). Twenty voice pathologists participated in the listening experiment and judged the degree of sexiness on a 7-point scale. The results showed that fundamental frequency, shimmer and nasalance had significant differences between actors and non-actors. The acoustic parameters of sexy voice matched perceptual aspects of a previous study: Low fundamental frequency-low pitch and high shimmer-husky voice. On the other hand, the nasalance score did not match that of the previous study: Decreased nasalance had a higher score on sexiness scale judged by the listeners. It would be desirable to study the voice quality by analyzing and controlling more acoustic and auditory parameters for practical applications in the future.
