  • The dynamic instability and natural frequency of axially moving beam with an attached mass are investigated. Thus, the effects of an attached mass on the stability of the moving beam are studied. The governing equation of motion of the moving beam with an attached mass is derived from the extended Hamilton's principle. The natural frequencies are investigated for the moving beams via the Galerkin method under the simple support boundary. Numerical examples show the effects of the attached mass and moving speed on the stability of moving beam. Moreover, the lowest critical moving speeds for the simple supported conditions have been presented. The results can be used in the analysis of axially moving beams with an attached mass for checking the stability.

  • The nonlinear dynamic characteristic of a straight tube conveying fluid with constraints and an attached mass on the tube is examined in this study. An experimental apparatus composed of an elastomer tube conveying water which has an attached mass and constraints is made and comparisons are done between the theoretical results from non-linear equation of motion of piping system and experimental results. And the results show that the tube is destabilized as the mass of the attached mass increases, and stabilized as the position of the attached mass close to the fixed end. In case of a small end-mass, the system shows rich and different types of periodic solutions. For a constant end-mass, the system undergoes a series of bifurcations after the first Hopf bifurcation, as the flow velocity increases, which causes chaotic motion of the tube eventually.

  • The paper deals with vibration suppression and dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying an internal flowing fluid and having an attached mass. Real pipe systems may have some valves or mechanical attached parts, which can be regarded as attached lumped masses. The effect of attached mass on the dynamic stability of a cantilevered pipe conveying fluid is investigated for different locations and magnitudes of the attached mass. The flow rate was controlled through motor pump output and measured by a flow meter. Experimental resutls in the vicinity of flutter fluid velocity were compared with theoretical predictions. It has been found that the experimental results are in substantial agreement with the theoretical predictions. Finally, in order to suppress the vibration of the pipe subjected to a disturbance, and control technique using an internal flowing fluid is introduced.

  • In this paper, the dynamic stability of a cracked simply supported pipe conveying fluid with an attached mass is investigated. Also, the effect of attached mass on the dynamic stability of a simply supported pipe conveying fluid is presented for the different positions and depth of the crack. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by the energy expressions using extended Hamilton's principle. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged pipe segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of a fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. Finally, the critical flow velocities and stability maps of the pipe conveying fluid are obtained by changing the attached mass and crack severity.

  • This paper presents the illustration of application under attached point mass to the special orthotropic plates with a pair of opposite edges simply supported and the other pair of opposite edges free. Design engineers need to calculate the natural frequencies of such elements but obtaining exact solution to such problems is very much difficult. Pretlove reported a method of analysis of beams with attached masses using the concept of effective mass. This method, however, is useful only for certain simple types of beam. Therefore, considering the method has been developed by D. H. Kim(1974) is simple, accurate, and very effective for the plates with arbitrary boundary conditions and irregular sections, this paper calculates the natural frequencies of composite laminated plate under attached point mass/masses.

  • The dynamic instability and natural frequency of elastically restrained pipe conveying fluid with the attached mass and crack are investigated. The pipe system with a crack is modeled by using extended Hamilton's Principle with consideration of bending energy. The crack on the pipe system is represented by a local flexibility matrix and two undamaged beam segments are connected. In this paper, the influence of attached mass, its position and crack on the dynamic stability of a elastically restrained pipe system is presented. Also, the critical flow velocity for the flutter and divergence due to the variation in the position and stiffness of supported spring is studied. Finally, the critical flow velocities and stability maps of the pipe conveying fluid with the attached mass are obtained by the changing parameters.

  • The forced vibration response characteristics of a elastically restrained pipe conveying fluid with attached mass are investigated in this paper. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion is derived by using Hamilton's principle. The effects of attached mass and spring constant on the forced vibration characteristics of pipe at conveying fluid are studied. The forced deflection response of pipe with attached mass due to the variation of fluid velocity is also presented. The deflection response is the mid-span deflection of the pipe. The dimensionless forcing frequency is the range from 0 to 16 which is the first natural frequency of the pipe.
