Land surface temperature (LST) is a key environmental variable in a wide range of applications, such as weather, climate, hydrology, and ecology. However, LST is one of the most difficult surface variables to observe regularly due to the strong spatio-temporal variations. So, we have developed the LST retrieval algorithm from COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) data through the radiative transfer simulations under various atmospheric profiles (TIGR data), satellite zenith angle (SZA), spectral emissivity, and surface lapse rate conditions using MODTRAN 4. However, the LST retrieval algorithm has a tendency to overestimate and underestimate the LST for surface inversion and superadiabatic conditions, respectively. To minimize the overestimation and underestimation of LST, we also developed day/night LST algorithms separately based on the surface lapse rate (local time) and recalculated the final LST by using the weighted sum of day/night LST. The analysis results showed that the quality of weighted LST of day/night algorithms is greatly improved compared to that of LST estimated by original algorithm regardless of the surface lapse rate, spectral emissivity difference (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$) SZA, and atmospheric conditions. In general, the improvements are greatest when the surface lapse rate and ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ are negatively large (strong inversion conditions and less vegetated surface).

This study presents the development of an elevated subsidence inversion over a surface low pressure system, which was formed along the Changma front or Meiu-Baiu front. The results of our analysis strongly suggest that the inversion is dissimilar to those formed in anticyclonic situations but is instead similar to the onion-shaped sounding found in wake low. The present analysis indicates that the observed elevated inversion resulted from the intrusion of stratospheric air associated with tropopause folding.
Severe downslope windstorms observed at Gangneung, Korea in the springtime during the last 30 years are studied to understand their generation mechanisms. 92 severe wind cases are selected for which the maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceed two standard deviation of total mean plus ($18.7ms^{-1}$). They are categorized into the three mechanisms (hydraulic jump, partial reflection, and critical-level reflection) proposed in previous studies based on the flow condition, which is calculated using the wind and temperature profile observed at one upstream rawinsonde station, Osan. Among the three, partial reflection is found to be the most frequent mechanism for the last 30 years (1976 - 2005). To understand the role of inversion in generating severe downslope windstorms, horizontal velocity perturbation was calculated analytically for the atmosphere with an inversion layer. It turned out that the intensity of downslope wind was increased by inversion layer of specific heights, which are well matched with the observations. For better understanding the generation mechanisms, two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted for the 92 severe wind cases using the ARPS model. In most simulations, surface wind speed exceeds the value of the severe-wind criterion, and each simulated case can be explained by its own generation mechanism. However, in most simulations, the simulated surface wind speed is larger than the observed, due to ignoring the flow-splitting effect in the two-dimensional framework.

Since low-floor apartments ate vertically closer to patting lots and roadways, it is hypothesized that residents in low-floor apartments may be exposed to elevated ambient levels of motet vehicle emissions compared to residents in high-floor apartments. The present study examined this hypothesis by measuring two motor vehicle source-related pollutants(CO and PM10) in ambient air of high-rise apartment buildings within the boundary of industrial complexes according to atmospheric stability The ambient air concentrations of CO and PM10 were higher for low-floor apartments than for high-floor apartments, regardless of atmospheric stability, The median concentration ratio of the low-floor air to high-floor alt ranged from 1.3 to 2.0, depending upon atmospheric stabilities, seasons and compounds. Moreover, the CO and PM10 concentrations were significantly higher in the winter and in the summer, regardless of the Hoot height. Atmospheric stability also was suggested to be important for the residents' exposure of high-rise apartment buildings to both CO and PM10. The median ratios of surface inversion air to non-surface inversion air ranged from 1.2 to 1.7 and from 1.0 to 1.6 lot PM10 and CO, respectively, depending upon seasons. Conclusively, these parameters(apartment floor height, season, and atmospheric stability) should be considered when evaluating the exposure of residents, living in high-rise apartment buildings, to CO and PM10. Meanwhile, the median PMl0 outdoor concentrations were close to or higher than the Korean annual standards for PM10, and the maximum PM10 concentrations substantially exceeded the Korean PM10 standard, thus suggesting the need for a management strategy for ambient PM 10. Neither the median nor the maximum outdoor CO concentrations, however, were higher than the Korean CO standard.

The Yeongdong region is frequently vulnerable to heavy snowfall in winter in terms of societal and economical damages. By virtue of a lot of previous efforts, snowfall forecast has been significantly improved, but the performance of light snowfall forecast is still poor since it is very conducive to synoptic and mesoscale interactions, largely attributable to Taeback mountains and East Sea effects. An intensive observation has been made in cooperation with Gangwon Regional Meteorological Office and National Institute of Meteorological Studies in winter seasons since 2019. Two distinctive Cold Air Damming (CAD) events (14 February 2019 and 6 February 2020) were observed for two years when the snowfall forecast was wrong specifically in its location and timing. For two CAD events, lower-level temperature below 2 km ranged to lowest limit in comparisons to those of the previous 6-years (2014~2019) rawinsonde soundings, along with the stronger inversion strength (> 2.0℃) and thicker inversion depth (> 700 m). Further, the northwesterly was predominant within the CAD layer, whereas the weak easterly wind was exhibited above the CAD layer. For the CAD events, strong cold air accumulation along the east side of Taeback Mountains appeared to prevent snow cloud and convergence zone from penetrating into the Yeongdong region. We need to investigate the influence of CAD on snowfall in the Yeongdong region using continuous intensive observation and modeling studies altogether. In addition, the effect of synoptic and mesoscale interactions on snowfall, such as nighttime drainage wind and land breeze, should be also examined.
This study was conducted to investigate the sudden rise of fine particle concentration after the passage of typhoon USAGI and NARI in Busan. Nocturnal inversion layer was formed at atmospheric boundary layer and wind direction changed from southerly wind to northeasterly wind after USAGI passed through Busan. Fine particle concentration in Busan rapidly increased by subsidence of air pollutants released from sources and dust transported from in the vicinity of industrial regions. Wind direction changed from northeasterly wind to southeasterly wind, wind velocity increased and lower atmosphere became extremely unstable after NARI passed through Busan. $PM_{10}$ concentration of Busan increased sharply because of surface dust dispersed by strong wind. Fine particle concentration generally decreases by precipitation and wind after typhoon passes through. However, the concentration can also go up not only by subsidence and transportation in nocturnal inversion layer but also by surface dust which temporarily occurs by strong wind.

In this study, the atmospheric $CO_2$ concentrations estimated by CT2013B, a recent version of CarbonTracker, are compared with $CO_2$ measurements from the Comprehensive Observation Network for Trace gases by Airliner (CONTRAIL) project during 2010-2011. CarbonTracker is an inversion system that estimates surface $CO_2$ fluxes using atmospheric $CO_2$ concentrations. Overall, the model results represented the atmospheric $CO_2$ concentrations well with a slight overestimation compared to observations. In the case of horizontal distribution, variations in the model and observation difference were large in northern Eurasia because most of the model and data mismatch were located in the stratosphere where the model could not represent $CO_2$ variations well enough due to low model resolution at high altitude and existing phase shift from the troposphere. In addition, the model and observation difference became larger in boreal summer. Despite relatively large differences at high latitudes and in boreal summer, overall, the modeled $CO_2$ concentrations fitted well to observations. Vertical profiles of modeled and observed $CO_2$ concentrations showed that the model overestimates the observations at all altitudes, showing nearly constant differences, which implies that the surface $CO_2$ concentration is transported well vertically in the transport model. At Narita, overall differences were small, although the correlation between modeled and observed $CO_2$ concentrations decreased at higher altitude, showing relatively large differences above 225 hPa. The vertical profiles at Moscow and Delhi located on land and at Hawaii on the ocean showed that the model is less accurate on land than on the ocean due to various effects (e.g., biospheric effect) on land compared to the homogeneous ocean surface.

This study focused on comparing the meteorological conditions in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) on high-event days and non-event days in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). We utilized observed PM10 and meteorological variables at the surface as well as at the upper heights. The results showed that high-event days were consistently associated with lower wind speed, whereas wind direction showed no particular difference between high-event and non-event days with frequent westerlies and northwesterlies for both cases. During high-event days, the temperature was much warmer than the monthly normal values with a sharp increasing trend, and Relative Humidity (RH) was higher than the monthly normal, especially on high-event days in February. During high-event days in spring, a double inversion layer was present at surface and upper heights. This indicates that stability in the multi-layer is an important indicator of higher PM10 concentrations. Net radiation in spring and winter is also closely associated with higher PM10 concentrations. Strong net radiation resulted in large sensible heat, which in turn facilitated a deeper mixing height with diluted PM10 concentrations; in contrast, PM10 concentrations were higher when sensible heat in spring and winter was very low. We also confirmed that convective and friction velocity was higher on non-event days than on high-event days, and this was especially obvious in spring and winter. This indicated that thermal turbulence was dominant in spring, whereas in winter, mechanical turbulence was dominant over the SMA.

Sunspot penumbrae show supersonic downflow patches along the periphery. These patches are believed to be the return channels of the Evershed flow. There was previous study to investigate their structure in detail using Hinode SOT/SP observations (M. van Noort et al. 2013) but their data sample was only two sunspots. To make general description it needs to check more sunspot sample. We selected 242 downflow patches of 17 sunspots using Hinode SOT/SP observations from 2006 to 2012. Height-dependent maps of atmospheric parameters of these downflows was produced by using HeLix which was height dependent LTE inversion code of Stokes profiles. The inversion code at high resolution allows for the accurate determination of small scale structures. The recovered atmospheric structure of three layers indicates that regions with very high downflow velocities contain very strong magnetic fields reaching up to 7kG. The higher downflow velocity patches have bigger patch size. Magnetic fields of downflow patches are more vertical while penumbra shows horizontal field and neighbor of downflow patches have opposite polarity. Temperature of downflow patches at highest layer have more strong value than penumbra at deepest layer. The direction of velocity of downflow patches at highest layer have two branches. These result shows that we can expect some heating precess in the middle of layer.
