도시 캐노피와 수평 고해상도가 여름철 대류성 도시 강수에 미치는 영향: 2015년 8월 16일 서울 강수 사례 분석 (Impact of Urban Canopy and High Horizontal Resolution on Summer Convective Rainfall in Urban Area: A case Study of Rainfall Events on 16 August 2015)

  • The objective of this study is to examine the impact of urban canopy and the horizontal resolution on simulated meteorological variables such as 10-m wind speed, 2-m temperature and precipitation using WRF model for a local, convective rainfall case. We performed four sensitivity tests by varying the use of urban canopy model (UCM) and the horizontal resolution, then compared the model results with observations of AWS network. The focus of our study is over the Seoul metropolitan area for a convective rainfall that occurred on 16 August 16 2015. The analysis shows that mean diurnal variation of temperature is better simulated by the model runs with UCM before the convective rainfall. However, after rainfall, model shows significant difference in air temperature among sensitivity tests depending on the simulated rainfall amount. The rainfall amount is significantly underestimated in 0.5 km resolution model run compared to 1.5 km resolution, particularly over the urban areas. This is due to earlier occurrence of light rainfall in 0.5 km resolution model. Earlier light rainfall in the afternoon eliminates convective instability significantly, which prevents occurrence of rainfall later in the evening. The use of UCM results in a higher maximum rainfall in the domain, which is due to higher temperature in model runs with urban canopy. Earlier occurrence of rainfall in 0.5 km resolution model is related to rapid growth of PBL. Enhanced mixing and higher temperature result in rapid growth of PBL, which provides more favorable conditions for convection in the 0.5 km resolution run with urban canopy. All sensitivity tests show dry bias, which also contributes to the occurrence of light precipitation throughout the simulation period.

  • Heavy rainfall (over $80mm\;hr^{-1}$) system associated with unstable atmospheric conditions occurred over the Seoul metropolitan area on 27 July 2011. To investigate the heavy rainfall system, we used three-dimensional data from Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System (KLAPS) reanalysis data and analysed the structure of the precipitation system, kinematic characteristics, thermodynamic properties, and Meteorological condition. The existence of Upper-Level Jet (ULJ) and Low-Level Jet (LLJ) are accelerated the heavy rainfall. Convective cloud developed when a strong southwesterly LLJ and strong moisture convergence occurring around the time of the heavy rainfall is consistent with the results of previous studies on such continuous production. Environmental conditions included high equivalent potential temperature of over 355 K at low levels, and low equivalent potential temperature of under 330 K at middle levels, causing vertical instability. The tip of the band shaped precipitation system was made up of line-shaped convective systems (LSCSs) that caused flooding and landslides, and the LSCSs were continuously enhanced by merging between new cells and the pre-existing cell. Difference of wind direction between low and middle levels has also been considered an important factor favouring the occurrence of precipitation systems similar to LSCSs. Development of LSCs from the wind direction difference at heights of the severe precipitation occurrence area was also identified. This study can contribute to the identification of production and development mechanisms of heavy rainfall and can be used in applied research for prediction of severe weather.

적응시간 간격 알고리즘을 이용한 KIM의 계산 효율성 개선 (The Improvement of Computational Efficiency in KIM by an Adaptive Time-step Algorithm)

  • A numerical forecasting models usually predict future states by performing time integration considering fixed static time-steps. A time-step that is too long can cause model instability and failure of forecast simulation, and a time-step that is too short can cause unnecessary time integration calculations. Thus, in numerical models, the time-step size can be determined by the CFL (Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy)-condition, and this condition acts as a necessary condition for finding a numerical solution. A static time-step is defined as using the same fixed time-step for time integration. On the other hand, applying a different time-step for each integration while guaranteeing the stability of the solution in time advancement is called an adaptive time-step. The adaptive time-step algorithm is a method of presenting the maximum usable time-step suitable for each integration based on the CFL-condition for the adaptive time-step. In this paper, the adaptive time-step algorithm is applied for the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) to determine suitable parameters used for the adaptive time-step algorithm through the monthly verifications of 10-day simulations (during January and July 2017) at about 12 km resolution. By comparing the numerical results obtained by applying the 25 second static time-step to KIM in Supercomputer 5 (Nurion), it shows similar results in terms of forecast quality, presents the maximum available time-step for each integration, and improves the calculation efficiency by reducing the number of total time integrations by 19%.

대기연직구조 분류에 따른 서울지역 강한 강수 특성 연구 (A Study of the Characteristics of Heavy Rainfall in Seoul with the Classification of Atmospheric Vertical Structures)

  • 본 연구는 서울에서 강한 강수와 관련된 대기연직구조를 객관적으로 분류하고 대표 종관장과 강수 특성을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2009년부터 2018년까지 여름철 (6~8월) 서울에서 강한 강수(>15 mm hr-1) 시 오산에서 비양된 레윈존데 자료에 객관적 방법을 적용하여 대기연직구조를 분류하였다. 그 결과 대기 전체가 습윤한 형태인 Thin Tube (TT) 형이 34.7% (17회), 건조한 하층 위로 습윤한 층이 존재하는 Inverted V (IV) 형이 20.4% (10회), 습윤한 하층 위로 건조한 공기가 침투하는 Loaded Gun (LG)이 20.4% (10회)로 분석되었다. TT형의 경우 SRH 값이 357.6 J kg-1으로 역학적 불안정이 큰 반면, LG와 IV형의 경우 1000 hPa부터 600 hPa까지 열적 불안정이 큰 특징을 보였다. NCEP/FNL 자료를 사용한 합성장 분석에서 TT형의 경우 기압골 전면(500 hPa)인 서해상에 저기압이 위치하여(850 hPa) 저기압이 강화될 수 있는 종관 패턴이 형성되었다. IV와 LG형의 경우 북만주와 중국의 북동에 강한 저기압이 위치하는 종관 패턴을 보이며, 기압경도에 의한 남서기류의 유입이 상대적으로 약하였다. 강수 전반부에 강수가 집중되는 형태가 모든 유형에서 나타났으며, 특히 IV형의 경우 강수 전반 높은 강도로 강수가 집중되어 내린다. TT형의 경우 가장 많은 강수량(123.9 mm)을 보였지만 다른 유형과 비교하였을 때, 강수가 전·후반 고르게 오랜 시간 지속되는 특징을 보였다. 본 연구 결과는 서울에서 강수와 관련된 고층관측자료의 이해도를 높이는 동시에 강수 예보기술 발전에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

복합발전 가스터빈 연소기용 저선회 노즐의 연료 분사 위치에 따른 배기배출 및 연소진동 특성 (Emissions and Combustion Dynamics with Fuel Injection Position for Low-swirl Nozzles of Gas Turbine Combustor)

  • 본 연구에서는 SN(Swirl Number)는 같지만 코어부와 스월러부의 질량유량비(m)가 다른 저선회 노즐 2종을 설계하여 상압 연소성능 시험을 수행하였다. 각 노즐에 대해 단열화염온도에 따른 연소성능 실험을 수행하였고 화염구조 특성, NOx 배출 특성, 연소진동 모드를 파악하였다. 화염구조가 크게 차이가 있었지만 CO 배츨 특성은 유사하였고 NOx 배출 특성도 화염구조보다는 연소진동과 더 큰 관련성이 있음을 보였다. 연료노즐의 위치를 변경하여 대류지연시간을 조절하면서 연소진동 및 NOx 배출 특성을 파악하였는데 대류지연시간이 연소진동 주기의 (3+4n)/4±1/4 (n=0,1,2,...) 영역에 들어올 때 진소진동이 강하게 나타나고 반대의 경우는 연소진동이 아주 약하게 발생함을 확인하였다.

  • Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on methane gas. The objective of this study was to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. CARS temperature measurements were made at several spatial locations under lean premixed conditions to get the information on temperature field within the combustor. Also the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature fluctuation was investigated. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. Temperature PDFs gave an insight on the flame behavior. And strong correlation between phase-resolved temperature profile and pressure cycle was observed. Results of the phase-resolved high temperature gave an additional information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio at flame as well as the effect of mixing quality on NOx emission characteristics.

2004년 3월 4일 대설 사례에 관한 분석과 예보를 위한 제안 (Analyses of the Heavy Snowfall Event Occurred over the Middle Part of the Korean Peninsula on March 4, 2004 and Suggestions for the Future Forecast)

  • A heavy snowfall event occurred over the middle part of the Korean peninsula on March 4, 2004. The numerical models of KMA failed to forecast this heavy snowfall event because this event was due to small scale disturbance by low lever convergence and atmospheric instability. The analyses for this heavy snowfall have been performed to give forecasters useful suggestions for forecasting heavy snowfall events in the future. The analyses for the snowfall event were recounted by the Hourly Korean Peninsula Analysis Weather Chart (HKPAWC) presenting on the KMA intranet system. We confirmed that warm air flows of low level into south central Korea in conjunction with strong southwesterly winds played important role in the heavy snowfall event. We suggested several check points to improve the forecast of heavy snowfall events in the future through the results of the analyses.

열가소성 폴리머 필름의 마이크로 점착 거동에 대한 온도의 영향 (Effect of Temperature on the Micro-scale Adhesion Behavior of Thermoplastic Polymer Film)

  • Adhesion tests were carried out in order to investigate the effect of temperature on the adhesion behavior between a PMMA film and a fused silica lens in the micro scale. For the tests, a microtribometer system was specially designed and constructed. The pull-off forces on the PMMA film were measured under atmospheric condition as the temperature of the PMMA film was increased from 300 K to 443 K and decreased to 300 K. The contact area between the PMMA film and the lens was observed during the test. The adhesion behavior was changed with the change of the PMMA surface state as the temperature increased. In glassy state below 363 K, the pull-off force did not change with the increase of temperature. In rubbery state from 383 K to 413 K, the pull-off force increased greatly as the temperature increased. In addition, the area of contact was enlarged. In viscous state above 423 K, the fingering instability was observed in the area of contact when the PMMA film contacted with the lens. It was also found that the adhesion behavior can be varied with the thermal history of the PMMA film. The residual solvent in the PMMA film could emerge to the PMMA surface due to the heating and reduced the pull-off force.

오리피스 내부유동에 따른 like-doublet 인젝터의 분열 특성 (The Effects of Orifice Internal Flow on the Breakup Characteristics of Liquid Sheets Formed by Like-Doublet Injectors)

  • The breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by like-doublet injector were investigated in the cold-flow and atmospheric ambient pressure condition. The sheet breakup wavelength, which induces the sheet to be broken into ligaments, as well as the sheet breakup length, which is important for the flame location, was measured using a stroboscopic light. The liquid ligaments are formed intermittently after the breakup of sheet, and the wavelength of ligaments has been believed to have a relation to the combustion instability of liquid rocket engine. Therefore, the wavelength of ligaments and the breakup length of ligaments into fine drops were also measured. Since these spray characteristics are affected by the flow characteristics of two liquid jets before they impinge on each other, we focused on the effects of orifice internal flow such as the cavitation phenomenon that occurs inside the sharp-edged orifice. From the experimental results, we found that the liquid jet turbulence delays the sheet breakup and makes shorter wavelengths for both sheets and ligaments. Since the turbulent strength of sharp-edged orifice is stronger than that of round-edged orifice, the shape of orifice entrance results in large differences in the spray characteristics. Using these results, we proposed empirical models on the spray characteristics of the like-doublet injector, and these models are believed to provide some useful and actual data for designing liquid rocket combustors.
