  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a passive sampler in measuring atmospheric ammonia concentrations using chamber system. The ability of the passive sampler to quantitatively determine atmospheric ammonia gas was almost identical to that of the reference method (indophenol method). There was no significant difference between concentrations measured by the two methods. The detection and quantification limits of the ammonia passive sampler were 16.9 ppb and 25.3 ppb, respectively, for a 24-h sampling period. The average coefficient of variation between replicated samplers was $6.7{\pm}4.2%$. The concentrations measured by the two methods (passive sampler and indophenol method) were no significant difference with good a correlation (correlation coefficient=0.964).

  • Glow discharge has lots of attractive properties, such as lower discharge sustaining voltage, no generation of ozone, and so on. And more, ionizer was developed recently using an atmospheric pressure glow discharge. On the other hand, ionizer needs a compressed or blown air to transport ion for charged objects. This air is very useful in explosive hazardous area to prevent the explosion of flammable gas and/or vapor by ignition sources, e.g. electrical spark. In this paper, we investigated the ionizing characteristic of atmospheric pressure glow discharge by controlled air flow rate from 5 liters to 60 liters a minute, and compared with decay time between the corona discharge and glow discharge as a function of some direction and distance from discharge ion source. We confirmed that an air flow rate needs 25 liters a minute to sustain the most suitable atmospheric pressure glow discharge and to increase an ionizing efficiency.

  • Inhibition of propellant temperature rising in liquid propulsion rocket using cryogenic fluid as a propellant is very important. Especially propellant temperature rising during stand-by after filling and pre-pressurization can bring into cavitation in turbo-pump. One of the method preventing propellant temperature rising in cryogenic feeding system is recirculating propellant through the loop composed of propellant tank, feed pipe, and recirculation pipe. The circulation of propellant is promoted through gas-lift effect by gas injection to lower position of recirculation pipe. In this experiment liquid oxygen and gas helium is used as propellant and injection gas. Under atmospheric and pressurized tank ullage condition, helium injection flow-rate is varied to observe the variation of recirculating flow-rate and propellant temperature in the feed pipe. There is appropriate helium injection flow-rate for gas-lift recirculation system.

  • In line with the expected price reduction of natural gas associated with the introduction of shale gas, it is expected that the optimal power mix for the electric power generation be changed. In this study, the reconfigured power mix is estimated with the varying natural gas price by using the Screening Curve Method (SCM). It is found that about 3% and 9% coal in the overall power mix is replaced with natural gas if the natural gas price falls 20% and 40% of the current price, respectively. It is also found that the reconfigured power mixes would provide the reduction of the emissions of air pollutants which are equivalent to 369 and 807 MUS$.

  • Exhaust gas containing wood tar of high concentration is discharged from charcoal production kilns. The large amount of emissions are often found by operational failure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an integrated treatment system in treating charcoal production exhaust. The system, which combined a tar collection device and a post-combustion unit, was proposed to remove moisture, wood tar, particulate matter, and other gas-phase pollutants (CO, $CH_4$, total hydrogen carbons) from exhaust gases. Heat recovery units were also applied in the system to utilize waste heat.

  • There could be significant numbers of isolated stellar mass black holes in our Galaxy. The detection of these black holes will provide important clues on the origin of supermassive black holes. Interstellar gas will be accreted to these isolated black holes in nearly spherical flow. The gas and the interstellar magnetic field will be compressed and emit bremsstrahlung and magnetic bremsstrahlung. We calculate the density, temperature, magnetic field of the accretion flow onto a 10 solar mass black hole as well as its radiative emission; special attention is given to cyclotron radiation and synchrotron radiation, which covers from microwave to X-ray. We consider the possibility to detect these radiation from isolated Galactic black holes with current instruments and surveys.

  • The major conversion processes of SO$_2$ to sulfate are reactions in gaseous, aqueous phase and on dust surface. Using the measurement data in Ganghwa, the background area of metropolitan Seoul Area, the relative contiribution of the conversion processes are estimated. Generally, aqueous cloud if the most important conversion path followed by dust surface, gas, and aqueous aerosol. Importance of conversion on dust surface increases for the dust storm period. The total conversion rate values over the metropolitan Seoul area are between 1.5 and 8.8$\times$10$^{-11}$ mole m$^{-3}$ air.

  • This study was carried out to interpret mathematically hydraulic behaviour in packing tower which packed 50 mm plastic Hiflow-ring with a dimension of 300 mm wide and 1,400 mm high. In view of energy saving, the recent packing. 50 mm plastic Higlow-ring was superior to conventional packings because of low pressure drop in high loads. As relative error between numerically predicted and experimentally obtained values was less then 6% in the loading and flooding point, it found that therir results appeared to be adequate. Comparison of hose two values in both dry and wet packing conditions. relative errors amount to 3.96 and 5.6%, respectively. In order to evaluate the operating characteristics of packing, the type, size, and material for packings must be estimated in various system and loads. This study is able to calculated pressure drop, hold-up, gas and liquid loads using mathematical interpretation. For these calculation, the specific constants of each packings must be calculated first all. The method of mathematical interpretation in this study turned out to be superior to the existing methods because of reduced errors at loading and flooding point.

  • Hot gas filtration method via using ceramic filters is an evolving technology applicable to numerous industrial and air pollution control processes. Alumino silicate, organic and inorganic binders were the major raw materials in manufacturing ceramic filters. In this work, disc type ceramic filters(50$\phi$$\times$10t) were manufactured by vacuum forming processes using ceramic raw materials. The porosity and bulk density of disc type ceramic filers ranged from 86 to 89% and from 0.27 to 0.36 g/㎤, respectively. In this work disc type ceramic medium were tested utilizing coupon experimental apparatus. Disc type filters showed high collection efficiencies over 99.96% with Darchs law coefficients of 4.1$\times$10(sup)10~9.63$\times$10(sup)10/$m^2$ depending on mean pore sizes. In addition, filtration and detachment of ceramic filters turned out to be performed effectively using 10 cm/sec face velocity, 5 minutes filtration cycle, 100msec pulse jet valve opening time and 3 bar pulsing pressure.
