  • PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons), one of the carcinogenic materials in environment, were investigated in this study. The standardized analysis conditions were tested, and then various factors which affect to the ambient PAHs concentration in Seoul were estimated. Moreover, the emissions of PAHs from major stationary sources were investigated to determine the quantitative relationships between ambient PAHs concentrations and emission sources. From the factor analysis, three factors relevant to the ambient PAHs in Seoul were found. Factor 1 was related to the concentrations of chrysene, pyrene, indeno (1, 2, 3-cd)pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo prerylene which were mainly emitted from gasoline and diesel fueled cars. Factor 2 showed higher loadings in phenanthrene and anthracene which were due to LNG and BC oil combustion in industry and home. And factor 3 included dibenz(a, h)anthracene and acenaphthene which were emitted from open burning and municipal solid waste incineration. Conclusively, all of three factors were consisted in 82% of total variance. The contribution of mobile sources in ambient air in Seoul was estimated at 64%, that of industrial and home sources at 17%, and that of open burning and municipal incineration at 1%.

  • Since the atmospheric clearness index is main factor for evaluating global-dimming of atmosphere environment, it is necessary to estimate its characteristics all over the major cities in Korea. We have begun collecting clearness index data since 1982 at 16 different cities and considerable effort has been made for constructing a standard value from measured data at each city. The new clearness data for global-dimming analysis will be extensively used by evaluating atmospheric environment as well as by solar PV application system designer or users. From the results, we can conclude that 1) Yearly mean 61.9% of the atmospheric clearness index was evaluated for clear day all over 2) A significant difference of atmospheric clearness index is observed between 1982-1989 and 1990-1997, 1998-2005 through 16 different cities in Korea.

  • Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and Elemental Analysis Syztem (EAS) were applied to the investiga-tion of the Characteristics and sources of wintertime atmospheric aerosols in Seoul. Atmospheric aerosols were collected by both fine and coarse fractions using a two-stage filter pack sampler from Kon-Kuk university during the winter season of 1999. PIXE was applied to the analysis of the middle and heavy elements with atomic numbers greater than 14(Si) and EAS was applied to the measurement of the light elements such as H, C and N. The fact that 64.2% of mass of fine particles in Seoul consists of the light elements (N, C , and H) suggests that the measurement of light elements is extremely important. The average mass concentration is Seoul was 38.6$\mu\textrm{g}$m(sup)-3. Elements such as Ca, Fe, Mg, and Ti appeared to have very low Fine/Coarse ratios(0.1∼0.4), whereas che-mical components related to anthropogenic sources such as Br, V, Pb, and Zn were observed to accumulate in the fine fraction. In the Asian Dust Storm(ADS) event, the concentation of soil components increased dramatically. Reconstruction of the fine mass concentrations estimated by a newly revised simple model was fairly in good agreement with the measured ones. Source identification was attempted using the enrichment factor and Pearsons coefficient of correlation. The typical elements derived from each source could be classified by this method.

  • This study was carried out to find the characteristics of surface ozone concentration data obtained during 1988-1991 by the Korea Ministry of Environment. Seasonal data (spring, summer, autumn and winter) wre obtained in May, August, November and February respectively at Kwanghwamun in Seoul. The pollutants analyzed in this study are $SO_2, TSP, CO, NO, NO_2 and NO_2/NO$. Atmospheric factors such as solar radiation, wind speed, relative humidity, cloud amount and atmospheric temperature are also analyzed. The influence of pollutants and atmospheric factors that affect ozone concentration were analyzed by statistical method. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The ozone concentration varied seasonally. The maximum values were 23 ppb in spring, 33 ppb in summer, 16 ppb in autumn and 13 ppb in winter. So the seasonal ozone value was highest in Summer. 2. Te diurnal concentration of ozone was highest during 2-4 P. M. and was very low in the morning and evening. 3. The maximal correlation coefficients of each season between ozone concentration and the influencing pollutants or atmospheric factors asr as follows ; a. spring, r = 0.44(solar radiation) b. summer, r = -0.59(relative humidity) c. autumn, r = -0.55(relative humidity) d. winter, r = -0.58($NO_2$) 4. The major factor affecting the ozone concentration in spring was solar radiation, Relative humidity was the first affecting factor in summer, autumn and $NO_2$ concentration was dominant in winter.

  • The purpose of the study was to identify sources of particulate matters statistically and to estimate the mass contribution quantitatively in the Pusan metropolitan area. Then, the study has used the TTFA (target transformation factor analysis) model, a receptor model, to apportion aerosol mass with the raw data of 106 ambient samples characterized by 24 heavy metal variables. The TTFA was extensively applied to generate source profiles and their aerosol mass contributions. Though a couple of sources were not identified, four to seven sources were able to be extracted at 3 different sites (Jang Rim-Dong, Kwang Bok-Dong, and Kwang An-Dong) in Pusan area and finally mass conributions could be calculated.

  • Total particulate mater (TPM), $NO_2$ and $NH_3$ were measured simultaneously in the smoking and non-smoking locations during an eleven month period from March 1986 to January 1987 at three sites in Chicago : Illinois Institute of Technology Cafeteria, Rush-Presbyterian St. Lukes Medical Center Cafeteria and a downtown office building. From this study, the mean concentrations of $NO_2$ and $NH_3$ were not significantly different between the smoking and non-smoking locations at any sampling site ; however, there was a statistical difference for TPM between the smoking and non-smoking locations. Activity factor was useful for describing the contribution from indoor source. The linear regression analysis was reasonable method for discriminating the individual contribution of source to determine the emission factor. The TPM emission factor determined from this technique was in good agreement with value from the literature.

  • The physical properties of an atmospheric boundary layer in Wolryong, a west coastal region of Jeju, South Korea, in terms of the atmospheric stability and roughness length, is important and relevant to both engineers and scientists. The study is aiming to understand the atmospheric stability around this region and its effect on the roughness length. We calculate the Monin-Obukhov length(L) against 3 typical regions of the atmospheric condition - unstable regime (-5$-0.2{\leq}H/L{\leq}0.2$) and stable regime (0.2
