Relationships between TSP and PM10 concentrations were evaluated using their respective data sets collected from Taegu and Kyeungsan areas during the period of December 1993 to November 1994. The collection of data was made using the gravimetric and $\beta$-ray absorption ($\beta$-MPM) methods for 7 days of every month from three urban sites in Taegu and one suburban site in Kyeungsan. Correlation coefficients between TSP and PM10 concentrations for these four sampling sites were found in the range of 0.85 $\sim$ 0.96. Correlation analysis was also conducted for $\beta$-PM concentration data that were measured only from the residential and commercial sites. The correlation coefficients between TSP and $\beta$-PM concentrations were 0.9 in the residential site and 0.8 in the commercial site. By contrast, the correlation coefficients between PM10 $\beta$-PM concentrations were almost identical for both the residential and commercial sites with a value of 0.88. The mean ratio for PM10 to TSP concentrations for all sites was appeared to be 0.68. The analysis of seasonal trends in PM10/TSP ratios showed that the contribution of PM10 to TSP concentrations was more significant during winter (0.70 $\sim$ 0.75) than during summer (0.61 $\sim$ 0.68). The results of this study may provide empirical informations on the compatability of aerosol data measured by different sampling methods.
The purpose of this study is to estimate hourly Asian dust emission flux in springtime by using the optimized Weather Research Forecasting model (WRF) in order to accurately predict the horizontal flux of Asian dusts. Asian dust emission flux using 5 empirical formulas such as US EPA, Park and Inn, Wang, The Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) and Dust Entrainment and Deposition (DEAD) were calculated and compared by using classified land-use types and size distribution at various locations in China and Mongolia together with the hourly meteorological elements of the WRF model. As a result, the empirical formula in US EPA among them, which was considered the various conditions such as vegetation, soil type and terrain, was better than the other 4 empirical formulas. However, these formulas were adjusted hourly and vertically in time and space because there was different order and time resolution of dust emissions from original empirical formulas.
In this study, the ionic composition of volcanogenically derived particles and their temporal and spatial distributions have been investigated to evaluate the impact of the volcanic eruption on the local ecosystem and residents. To this end, an intensive field study was conducted to measure the size-segregated particulate matters at the east part of Sakurajima in Japan. Fractionated sampling of particles into > $PM_{10}$, $PM_{10-2.5}$, and $PM_{2.5}$ was made by a multi nozzle cascade impactor (MCI). The concentration of various ions present in the size-resolved particles was determined by Ion chromatography. The time dependent 3-dimensional Volcanic Ash Forecast Transport And Dispersion (VAFTAD) model developed by the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) indicated that the sampling site of this work was affected by the volcanic aerosol particles plume. The temporal distributions of sulfate and $PM_{2.5}$ during the field campaign were significantly variable with important contributions to particle mass concentration. The chlorine loss, suspected to be caused by acidic components of volcanic gases, occurred predominantly in fine particles smaller than $10\;{\mu}m$.
Total suspended particles were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea during the period of March 11 .sim. April 19, 1994. Concentrations of non-sea salt(nss) ions were higher than those measured at clean marine areas in Japan and other background marine areas in the world. Especially, nss sulfate concentration is compatable to thoes measured at Seoul. It is suggested that most nss sulfate concentration is originated from anthropogenic sources. Nss sulfate concentration shows strong correlation with ammonium and nss potassium concentrations while shows no a pparent correlation with nitrate and nss calcium concentrations. Nss calcium concentrations shows strong correlation with nss potassium and mss magnesium concentrations. It is deduced that nss potassium has two origins, one anthropogenic, the other crustal. Backward trajectory analysis results show the trajectories of air parcel during the measurement period were mostly originated from China. It is shown that cases of high nss sulfate with high nss calcium can occur when an air parcel originated from arid and semi-arid regions of morthwestern China or Mongolia passes through northeastern China.
The particle depolarization ratios were retrieved from the observation with a multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Gwangju, Korea ($35.11^{\circ}N$, $126.54^{\circ}E$). The measurements were carried out on 24 February and 9 March 2004. Using the particle depolarization ratios, the non-dust aerosol particles were distinguished from the Asian dust plume, and the proportion of the non-dust particle to total dust plume was retrieved. The calculated proportion of the non-dust particle was used for the retrieval of backscatter coefficients at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and extinction coefficients at 355 and 532 nm of non-dust particles in the dust plume. Microphysical parameters of non-dust particles including single-scattering albedo at 532 nm were retrieved using retrieved optical values. The retrieved single-scattering albedo of non-dust particles was 0.92~0.95 below 1 km height and 0.82~0.91 above 1 km height on 24 February 2004 and $0.81{\pm}0.03$ on 9 March 2004.
Characteristics of anbient at Korean, Cheju Island have been studied during the intensive field study period on March 11 .sim. 17, 1994 in collaboration with other research organizations from Korea and abroad. The particle size distribution was measured using an Electrical Aerosol Analyzer(EAA) and an Optical particle Counter(OPC). Fine particles(PM1 and PM3) have been collected by filter pack samplers and their ionic compositions have been analyzed. sampling errors inherent to the filter pack sampling method are discussed and the method to analyze those errors are presented. The rine mass concentrations of this study show very similar mass concentrations when Seoul is clear. This is somewhat surprising result, because the most of researchers believe that Kosan is one of the cleanest area in Korea. Bimodal volume size distributions with peak values around 0.1 .sim. 0.2.mu.m and 3.mu.m in particle dimeter were observed for most of the measurement period, particle mass loadings and ionic composition data show a large fraction of particles are from non-sea salt origins. Estimation of water content and acidity of particles based on measurement by a gas/particle equilibrium model, SCAPE, reveals that the pH values of particles are comparable to or lower than those estimated based on measurements in Los Angeles, U.S.A. during the SCAQS study. These findings with the meteorological conditions during the study period suggest that the particles collected during the period have originated from outside Cheju Island.
Recently in Korea, due to the significant drop of lead and bromine levels as a marker of autoemission source in the urban areas, the conventional application of receptor methods has many difficulties to properly apportion mass contribution of some sources. It is then needed to urgently develop alternative source profiles and identify new emission markers. Thus, the study has extensively examined the results obtained from using PAHs and elemental data for receptor modeling and has provided an opportunity to identify alternative source compositions and to determine a proper number of the ambient emission sources in Seoul area. The purpose of the study is to identify the sources of PM-10 and to estimate their mass contributions in Seoul area. Thus, a receptor model, target transformation factor analysis(TTFA) has been massively applied. The TTFA offers the possibility of determining the number of sources and their mass contributions. The input data used in this study are composed of two separate sets: fine (d$_{p}$ < 2.5.mu.m) and coarse (2.5.mu.m < d$_{p}$ < 10.mu.m) mode aerosol samples. Each sample was simultaneously collected by a PM-10 dichotomous sampler during the daytime(8 AM to 8 PM) and the nighttime(8 PM to 8 AM) from February to October 1993 on the Sungdong-Gu, Seoul. All the samples were analyzed to determine the levels of 10 inorganic elements by an XRF system as well as 14 PAHs by a HPLC. However, only 8 inorganic elements and 7 PAHs were used for the various statistical analysis.sis.
Total 76 aerosol samples were collected at Sungsan in Cheju Inland by high volume air sample for 1 year, from May 1995 to April 1996, and were analyzed for major elements(Na, Mg, Ca, Al, Fe) and trace elements(Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, U) by ICP/AES and ICP/MS. This study aims to determine the concentrations of trace metals and their seasonal variations in the atmosphere of Cheju Island, where is the remote area from pollution sources and also is the midway of transport of Asian continental materials into the western North Pacific. The concentrations of Na and Mg contributed by sea-salt aerosols were similar to those in the western part of Cheju island(Kosan) and in the western coast of Korea(Mallipo). They showed the highest value in summer and the lowest in spring and winter. Crustal metals(Al, Fe, Ca, Mn, Co, U) were 2~3 times lower than those of Mallipo. These metals showed the lowest values in summer and the highest in spring. Pollution-derived metals (Zn, Cd and Pb) were 2~4 times lower than those in Malipo. Some elemental ratios in aerosols grouped by three wind directions(north-northwest, east, and south-southwest) such as Fe/Al and Pb/Zn are presented as useful tracers indicating source areas, and their differentiation may be explained by geology and fuel types of source areas.
Particle collection characteristics of the MOUDI cascade impactor has been studied for coarse particles in the range of 2 to 20$mu extrm{m}$ in aerodynamic diameter. A vibrating orifice aerosol generator was empolyed to generate monodisperse test aerosols. The oleic acid and sodium chloride(NaCl) particles were used as test aerosols. Aluminum foil and Teflon filter were selected as impaction media. The sampling flow rate was changed from 25 to 35L/min. Particle collection efficiency for single stage was examined for liquid particles. The stage response was obtained experimentally for the cascade impactor composed of three stages and a backup filter. The results showed that most of particle collection efficiencies measured in this work are similar to the efficiency curves obtained by Marple et al.(1991). For particles less than cut-off size of the stage, the collection efficiencies of solid particles are similar to those of loquid particles. However, the collection efficiency of solid particles decreases with mereasing particle diameter for the particles greater than the actual cut-off size of the impactor. The particle collection efficiency increases with increasing sampling flow rate at the same particel size. However, the collection efficiency curves seem not to be greatly shifted with the flow rate. The stage responses obtained by direct measurements in this work are in good agreement with those derived from the collection efficiency curves for single stage.

Effects of inorganic aerosols on the kinetics of the hydroxyl radical reactions with selected aliphatic alkanes have been investigated using the relative rate technique. The relative rates in the absence and presence of aerosols were determined for n-butane, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-octane, and n-decane. P-xylene was used as a reference compound. Inorganic aerosols including (NH$_4$)$_2$SO$_4$, NH$_4$NO$_3$, and NaCl aerosols at two different aerosol concentrations that are typical of polluted urban conditions were tested. Total surface areas of aerosols were 1400 (Condition I) and 3400 $\mu$$m^2$ cm$^{-3}$ (Condition II). Significant changes in the relative rates in the presence of the inorganic aerosols were not observed for the n-butanel/$.$OH, n-pentanel/$.$OH, n-hexanel/$.$OH, n-octanel/$.$OH, and n-decanel/$.$OH reactions versus p-xylenel/$.$OH reaction. These results suggest that the promoting effects depend on the semiconducting property of the aerosols and the nature of the organic compounds.
