FLASH FLOOD FORECASTING USING REMOTELY SENSED INFORMATION AND NEURAL NETWORKS PART II : MODEL APPLICATION

  • A developed Quantitative Flood Forecasting (QFF) model was applied to the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The model incorporated the evolving structure and frequency of intense weather systems of the study area for improved flood forecasting. Besides using radiosonde and rainfall data, the model also used the satellite-derived characteristics of storm systems such as tropical cyclones, mesoscale convective complex systems and convective cloud clusters associated with synoptic atmospheric conditions as Input. Here, we present results from the application of the Quantitative Flood Forecasting (QFF) model in 2 small watersheds along the leeward side of the Appalachian Mountains in the mid-Atlantic region. Threat scores consistently above 0.6 and close to 0.8 ∼ 0.9 were obtained fur 18 hour lead-time forecasts, and skill scores of at least 40% and up to 55 % were obtained.

First Record of Platorchestia monodi (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Talitridae) from the Pacific Region

  • Platorchestia monodi (Mateus et al., 1986), the beach hopper, commonly lives in sea shores and was previously reported only from the Atlantic regions, such as Mid-Atlantic islands, Brazilian coast, and Israel. We present the first record of this species in the Pacific region. The present species can be clearly distinguished from related species by the shapes of gnathopods 1-2 and development of sexual dimorphism in antenna 2 and pereopod 7. Descriptions of the diagnostic characteristics of the species are provided on the text. In addition, this paper also provided the partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene of the species for its molecular characteristics.

심흘수 반잠수식 해양구조물 (DDS) 형상 개발 연구 (Development of Deep Draught Semisubmersible Shape)

  • This paper treats the development of a new type of deep draught semisubmersible offshore structural shape that has excellent heave motion response and less down-time. This new type of semisubmersible shape is characterized by heave dampers at each pontoon corner and appropriate column size adjustment to achieve the desired cancellation and resonance motion period. It was found that the final model had efficient workability, based on the wavescatter diagrams for the GoM and North Atlantic ocean, due to less heave motion, although the specific heave response at the 100 year return period wave condition in the North Atlantic was more or less increased.

  • This paper presents the performance analysis for CPL based design of a Low power digital neuroprocessor. We have verified the functionality of the components at the high level using Verilog and carried out the simulations in Silos. The components of the proposed digital neuroprocessor have also been verified at the layout level in LASI. The layouts have then been simulated and analyzed in Winspice for their timing characteristics. The result shows that the proposed digital neuroprocessor consistently consumes less power than other designs of the same function. It can also be seen that the proposed functions have lesser propagation delay and thus higher speed compared to the other designs.

  • 바다에서의 중력관측은 지오이드상에서 측정된 것으로 간주되고 Free-air이상 치는 지오이드상의 관측치로부터 표준타원지구면 위에서 예상되는 중력치를 감함으 로 결정된다. 표준타원 지구면과 지오이드면의 고저差 및 두 面 사이의 질량差에 따른 중력효과를 "Indirect Effect"라고 하는데 이 "Indirect Effect"를 북대서양 해수 면상에서 관측된 중력이상치에 고려해 본 결과 이 "Indirect Effect"를 바다에서의 중력관측치에 포함시키는 것이 맨틀운동을 포함한 지구의 광역 연구조사에 중요함 이 밝혀졌다.을 포함한 지구의 광역 연구조사에 중요함 이 밝혀졌다.
