  • The characteristics of traveling-wave electrodes for high-frequency electroptic integrated devices are described from the view point of improvement of phase-matching based on the conformal mapping method. Specific calculations of the characteristic impedance, effective microwave index, and eletrode loss for asymmetric coplanar strip(ACPS) and coplanar waveguide(CPW) electrode structures are presented as a function of the geometric electrode parameters including the electrode thickness and buffer layer thickness. 5-10(x10S0-6Tm) thick Au-ACPS electrodes were successfully fabricated by electroplating and ECR etcher. The improvement of modulation bandwidth can be theoretically observed from the combination of electrode and buffer layer thickness.

  • Objective quality measurement schemes that incorporate properties of the human auditory system. The basilar membrane (BM) acts as a spectrum analyzer, spatially decomposing the signal into frequency components. Filterbanks were used to complementing the linearity of BM. Each filterbank is an implementation or the Equivalent rectangular Bandwidth (ERB), gammachirp function. This filterbank is level-dependent asymmetric compensation filters. And for the validation of the auditory model, we calculate the calculated perceived difference(CPD).

  • The polarization mode dispersion (PMD) that restricts the transmission bandwidth was investigated in standard long single mode fiber which optimized at 1.3${\mu}m$. Although fiber has perfect circular symmetry, each optical fiber has different refractive index profiles. The investigation of PMD with random mode couplings were conducted in three kinds of fiber by the time-domain interferometric method. By using two manufacturing methods, MCVD(Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition) method and VAD(Vapor Phase Axial Deposition) method, the property of mechanical asymmetric lateral pressure, bending and twisting induced polarization mode dispersion were measured. The concatenated optical fibers were compared with other types.

  • Most of mobile computing systems allow mostly read-only transactions from mobile clients for retrieving various types of Information such as stock data, traffic information and news updates. Since previous concurrence control protocols, however, do not consider such a particular characteristics, the performance degradation occurs when previous schemes are applied to the broadcast environment. In this paper, we propose OCC/UTF(Optimistic Concurrence Control with Update Transaction First) that is most appropriate for broadcast environment. OCC/UTF lets a query transaction, that has already read the data item which was invalidated by update transaction, read again the same data item without the abort of the query transaction due to non-serializability. Therefore, serializable order is maintained and the query transaction is committed safely regardless of commitment of update transactions. In OCC/UTF, Clients need not require server to commit their query transactions. Because of broadcasting the validation reports including values updated recently to clients, it reduces the overhead of requesting recent values from the server and the server need not also re-broadcast the newest values. As a result, OCC/UTF makes full use of the asymmetric bandwidth. It can also improve transaction throughput by increasing the commit ratio of query transactions as much as possible.

  • We propose a T-shaped UWB printed monopole antenna and investigate the effect of the surface currents of the radiator and ground plane. The measured impedance bandwidth of the antenna covers the range of 3.1 to 11 GHz for a VSWR$\le$2, which satisfies the requirement of the UWB operation. From the analysis of the surface currents, the proposed antenna can be treated as two asymmetric dipoles with the included angle of 90 degrees which lie along z-direction symmetrically. It is observed that the effect of the surface currents on the radiation patterns is similar to that of the corresponding dipole. The length and width of the found plane correspond the radius and length of the dipole respectively. This approach is also valid to general printed monopole antennas. Finally, we included an antenna example having resonance at a lower frequency by tapering the edges of the ground plane and another example having a bandstop characteristic by inserting an inverted-U slot on the radiator, and explain those antennas using the surface currents.

  • Dynamic response analysis of offshore triceratops with stiffened buoyant legs under impact and non-impact waves is presented. Triceratops is relatively new-generation complaint platform being explored in the recent past for its suitability in ultra-deep waters. Buoyant legs support the deck through ball joints, which partially isolate the deck by not transferring rotation from legs to the deck. Buoyant legs are interconnected using equally spaced stiffeners, inducing more integral action in dispersing the encountered wave loads. Two typical nonlinear waves under very high sea state are used to simulate impact and non-impact waves. Parameters of JONSWAP spectrum are chosen to produce waves with high vertical and horizontal asymmetries. Impact waves are simulated by steep, front asymmetric waves while non-impact waves are simulated using Stokes nonlinear irregular waves. Based on the numerical analyses presented, it is seen that the platform experiences both steady state (springing) and transient response (ringing) of high amplitudes. Response of the deck shows significant reduction in rotational degrees-of-freedom due to isolation offered by ball joints. Weak-asymmetric waves, resulting in non-impact waves cause steady state response. Beat phenomenon is noticed in almost all degrees-of-freedom but values in sway, roll and yaw are considerably low as angle of incidence is zero degrees. Impact waves cause response in higher frequencies; bursting nature of pitch response is a clear manifestation of the effect of impact waves on buoyant legs. Non-impact waves cause response similar to that of a beating phenomenon in all active degrees-of-freedom, which otherwise would not be present under normal loading. Power spectral density plots show energy content of response for a wide bandwidth of frequencies, indicating an alarming behaviour apart from being highly nonlinear. Heave, being one of the stiff degrees-of-freedom is triggered under non-impact waves, which resulted in tether tension variation under non-impact waves as well. Reduced deck response aids functional requirements of triceratops even under impact and non-impact waves. Stiffened group of buoyant legs enable a monolithic behaviour, enhancing stiffness in vertical plane.

  • Wi-Fi enabled Internet of Things (IoTs) had a substantial impact on society, economy and industry. However wireless connectivity technologies in unlicensed band such as Wi-Fi are vulnerable to interferences. They also face difficulty providing wireless connectivity over long range in dense networks due to the dynamically changed interference effect and asymmetric interference conditions. In this paper, robust acknowledgement transmission scheme is proposed for long range IoTs. According to the proposed scheme, it is possible to control the transmission rate of the transmission success rate of the response frame by adjusting the transmission rate of the response frame when the interference is present asymmetrically. It is also possible to use higher data rate when high quality link is guaranteed. The evaluation results demonstrated the proposed scheme improves the aggregate throughput by at most 9 Mbps when 20 MHz bandwidth transmission mode was adopted.

  • Multihop lightwave networks are the optical-fiber based local communication systems that employ WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology to fully use the enormous fiber bandwidth without requiring any tunable tranceives. In this paper, we introduce a novel ShuffleNet topology, asymmetric bilayered ShuffleNet(ABS) topology as a multihop WDM network technique. For 1Gb/s transmission system, we compared ABS topology with previously reported ones in terms of common network parameters such as average number of hops, throughput, time delay, and network power function. Through the analysis, the performance of ABS topology was proven to be superior to the existing ones. To decrease the amount of hardware required for implementing ABS system, we also proposed a new WDM channel sharing scheme. For (2, 3) ShuffleNet topology system, the number of wavelengths needed in the system can be reduced dramatically from 96 to 4 by using new scheme.

  • A broadcast method in mobile computing environments which have very large client populations solves the problem of low bandwidth. But most of previous proposed concurrency control protocols are restricted to read-only transactions from mobile client. In this paper, we propose the UTSM-ARM method which uses caching and broadcast method, and allows update transactions in mobile client. The UTSM-ARM decides the validation of cache data consistency with the dynamic update pattern ratio of accessed cached data. Also, the timestamps of accessed cached data and transaction in mobile client guarantee the serializable execution of mobile transactions. As a result, UTSM-ARM makes efficiently use of the asymmetric bandwidth of broadcast environment and can Increase the transaction throughput.
