The solar neighbourhood is the starting point for studies of the structure and evolution of the Galactic disk. Yet, our knowledge of the relative frequencies, distances, ages, chemical abundances, velocities, and birthplaces of the nearby stars is severely incomplete. We have determined complete, homogeneous, and precise such data for a kinematically unbiased sample of $\~$12,000 local F and G dwarf stars and describe a first, significant result from it.
A data simulator and reduction package for the Devasthal Optical Telescope Integral Field Spectrograph (DOTIFS) has been developed. Since data reduction for the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) requires complicated procedures due to the complex nature of the integral spectrograph, common reduction procedures are usually not directly applicable for such an instrument. Therefore, the development of an optimized package for the DOTIFS is required. The data simulator observes artificial object and simulates CCD images for the instrument considering various effects; e.g. atmosphere, sky background, transmission, spectrograph optics aberration, and detector noise. The data reduction package has been developed based on the outcomes from the DOTIFS data simulator. The reduction package includes the entire processes for the reduction; pre-processing, flat-fielding, and sky subtraction. It generates 3D data cubes as a final product, which users can use for science directly.
The purpose of this study is to find out learning content for astronomical observation that could perform astronomical programs regardless of weather conditions as a case for the present conditions of astronomical observation and the methods of new education for astronomical observation, and to suggest the methods of synchronized multiple astronomical observation and actual cases using the Internet network. The results are as follows. First, the method of galaxy-oriented astronomical education helped those attempting to approach astronomy academically for the first time grasp useful concepts as to the astronomical space, and let them look at the space in an objective sense, which was effective in forming cosmic structure and concepts. Second, the administration curriculum of astronomical observation team was related to data that systematically contained annual astronomical education concerning the operation of astronomical observation teams; thus, they could be suggested as beneficial teaching materials to the teachers who wanted to organize a school club meeting. Third, it has been noted that the level of students' satisfaction in p2d program and MSO program was very high, and they turned out to be effective learning methods that could be implemented even in times of rain when it would not be possible to conduct astronomical observation activities.
In order to encourage collaboration with North Korea in astronomy research field, we have studied the astronomical almanacs published in South and North Korea. The almanac contains fundamental astronomical data including not only daily calendar data but also unique characteristics selected by necessity in each country. We compared the South and North Korean astronomical almanacs in terms of contents, detailed descriptions, unique items, and so forth. We used the 2017 almanac for South Korea and 1993 almanac which is useful for this research for North Korea. We found that there were several differences between South and North Korean almanacs. The North Korean almanac is published for the astronomer or navigator, thus it has supplementary information about spherical astronomy such as precession of the north pole and position of celestial bodies. Whereas the South Korean almanac is published for the general public, and it distinctively contains luni-solar calendar, 24 solar terms, national holidays, etc. This study could be helpful for research cooperation between South and North Korea in astronomy.
It is known that the number of astronomers of a country registered to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is correlated with that country's gross domestic product (GDP). However, the robustness of this relationship could be doubted, as the fraction of astronomers joining the IAU differs from country to country. Here we revisit this correlation by using more recent data, updated as of 2017. We find a similar correlation by using the total number of astronomers and astrophysicists with PhD degrees that are working in each country, instead of adopting the number of IAU members. We confirm the existence of the correlation. We also confirm the existence of two subgroups within this correlation. One group consists of advanced European countries having a long history of modern astronomy, while the other group consists of countries having experienced recent rapid economic development. In order to determine the cause for the correlation, we obtained the long-term variations of the number of astronomers, population, and the GDP for a number of countries. We find that the number of astronomers per capita for recently developing countries has increased more rapidly as GDP per capita increased, than that for fully developed countries. We collected demographic data of the Korean astronomical community and find that it has experienced recent rapid growth. From these findings we estimate the proper size of the Korean astronomical community by considering Korea economic power and population. The current number of PhD astronomers working in Korea is approximately 310, but it should be 550 in order for it to be comparable and competitive to the sizes of the Spanish, Canadian, and Japanese astronomical communities. If current trends continue, this number will be reached by 2030. In order to be comparable to the German, French, and Italian communities, there should be 800 PhD astronomers in Korea. We discuss ways to overcome the vulnerability of the Korean astronomical community, based on the statistics of national R&D expenditure structure in comparison with that of other major advanced countries.

We conducted an unbiased near- to mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as a part of the AKARI Mission Program "Large-area Survey of the LMC" (LSLMC, PI: T. Onaka). An area of about 10 square degrees of the LMC was observed by five photometric bands (3.2, 7, 11, 15, and $24{\mu}m$) and a low-resolution slitless prism ($2-5{\mu}m$, R ~20) equipped with AKARI /IRC. We constructed and publicly released photometric and spectroscopic catalogues of point sources in the LMC based on the survey data. The catalogues provide a large number of near-infrared spectral data, coupled with complementary broadband photometric data. Combined use of the present AKARI LSLMC catalogues with other infrared point source catalogues of the LMC possesses scientific potential that can be applied to various astronomical studies.
We present the application of the Point Spread Function (PSF) deconvolution method to the astronomical Integral Field Unit (IFU) Spectroscopy data focus on the restoration of the galaxy kinematics. We apply the Lucy-Richardson deconvolution algorithm to the 2D image at each wavelength slice. We make a set of mock IFU data which resemble the IFU observation to the model galaxies with a diverse combination of surface brightness profile, S/N, line-of-sight geometry and Line-Of-Sight Velocity Distribution (LOSVD). Using the mock IFU data, we demonstrate that the algorithm can effectively recover the stellar kinematics of the galaxy. We also show that lambda_R_e, the proxy of the spin parameter can be correctly measured from the deconvolved IFU data. Implementation of the algorithm to the actual SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey data exhibits the noticeable difference on the 2D LOSVD, geometry, lambda_R_e. The algorithm can be applied to any other regular-grid IFS data to extract the PSF-deconvolved spatial information.
We present the second data release from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. The data release contains reduced spectral cubes for 1559 galaxies, about 50% of the full survey, having a redshift range 0.004 < z < 0.113 and a large stellar mass range 7.5 < log($M_*/M_{\odot}$) < 11.6. This release also includes stellar kinematic and stellar population value-added products derived from absorption line measurements, and all emission line value-added products from Data Release One. The data are provided online through Australian Astronomical Optics' Data Central. Our poster presents stellar/gas kinematics on the metallicity-mass plane and highlight several galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey that have interesting stellar and gas kinematics. For more information about data release 2, please see: https://sami-survey.org/abdr.
Events of eclipses as well as other major astronomical events observable in the eastern sector of Asian continent are computed and checked with astronomical records of antiquity. Particular attention was given to two types of the events recorded in remaining records of Dangun Chosun Period (DCP): (1) concentration of major planets near the constellation of Nu-Sung $(\beta\;Aries)$ and (2) a large ebb-tide. We find them most likely to have occurred in real time. i.e., when the positions of the sun, moon, and planets happen to be aligned in the most appropriate position. For solar eclipses data, however, we find among 10 solar eclipse events recorded, only 6 of them are correct up to months, implying its statistical significance is no less insignificant. We therefore conclude that the remaining history books of DCP indeed contains important astronomical records, thereby the real antiquity of the records of DCP cannot be disproved.
We present the data of photoelectric photometric observations of BW Vul carried out for four nights during the period of $1982{\sim}1984$. The light curves with asymmetric shape show a stillstand on the ascending branch at phase of ${\phi}{\approx}0.85$ just before the maximum light, and also the ampitude and shape of light curves are changed from night to night. Using all the published data, a new ephemeris of maximum time is derived, in which the period of light variation is $P=0^d.20102977$ and its increasing rate is 2.2 see/century.
