  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of a cold-recycling asphalt mixture used as a base layer and to determine the optimum emulsified-asphalt content for ensuring the mixture's performance. METHODS : The physical properties (storage stability, mixability, and workability) of three types of asphalt emulsion (CMS-1h, CSS-1h, and CSS-1hp) were evaluated using the rotational viscosity test. Asphalt emulsion residues, prepared according to the ASTM D 7497-09 standard, were evaluated for their rheological properties, including the $G*/sin{\delta}$and the dynamic shear modulus (${\mid}G*{\mid}$). In addition, the Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, and tensile-strength ratio (TSR) were evaluated for the cold-recycling asphalt mixtures fabricated according to the type and contents of the emulsified asphalt. RESULTS : The CSS-1hp was found to be superior to the other two types in terms of storage stability, mixability, and workability, and its $G*/sin{\delta}$ value at high temperatures was higher than that of the other two types. From the dynamic shear modulus test, the CSS-1hp was also found to be superior to the other two types, with respect to low-temperature cracking and rutting resistance. The mixture test indicated that the indirect tensile strength and TSR increased with the increasing emulsified-asphalt content. However, the mixtures with one-percent emulsified-asphalt content did not meet the national specification in terms of the aggregate coverage (over 50%) and the indirect tensile strength (more than 0.4 MPa). CONCLUSIONS : The emulsified-asphalt performance varied greatly, depending on the type of base material and modifying additives; therefore, it is considered that this will have a great effect on the performance of the cold-recycling asphalt pavement. As the emulsified-asphalt content increased, the strength change was significant. Therefore, it is desirable to apply the strength properties as a factor for determining the optimum emulsified-asphalt content in the mix design. The 1% emulsified-asphalt content did not satisfy the strength and aggregate coverage criteria suggested by national standards. Therefore, the minimum emulsified-asphalt content should be specified to secure the performance.

  • This study is a fundamental research for recycling waste vinyl (WV) in asphalt mixture for improving roadway pavement. Mix design was conducted by WV content and optimum asphalt content (OAC) was determined for dense-graded surface course mixture. Marshall stability test, indirect tensile strength (ITS) test and wheel tracking test were carried out to measure the characteristics of WV-added asphalt concretes. From the results of this study, recycling WV in asphalt mixture is possible. However, as WV content increased, melted WV clustering appeared in asphalt mixture. It could be considered that adding too much WV in asphalt mixture is not proper. The proper content of LDPE and HDPE WV was appeared to be 12% and 8%, respectively.

  • PURPOSES: In this study, various laboratory tests were performed to investigate the suitability of wasted vinyl as a modifier of asphalt binder. METHODS: Based on the ASTM specification, variations in material properties of asphalt binder such as penetration, flash point, softening point, ductility, penetration index (PI), and performance grade (PG) with vinyl content were tested and analyzed. RESULTS: Lavoratory tests revealed that penetration and ductility of the asphalt binder increased with the vinyl content. The flash point, softening point, and PI decreased, and PG changed from 64-22 to 70-22 with increase of the vinyl content. CONCLUSIONS: Wasted vinyl modified the material properties of the asphalt binder. However, the asphalt binder with vinyl content over 6.0% was unsuitable as a pavement material.

  • In this study, because of the importance of asphalt content, the target is to develop a asphalt content detector that the influence of the jurisdiction and usage of radioisotopes are limited of 100[${\mu}Ci$] or less. For development of a asphalt content detector, it is divided into three parts that is affected the change of asphalt content due to the position of neutron source. First part is to decrease the distance between asphalt mixture and neutron source, second is to install the reflector, and last is to change the history number. It performed to analysis by computer simulation and satisfactory results of error range can use to design data for development of a asphalt content detector.

  • Due to the advantages of less raw materials and fossil fuel consumption, lower carbon footprint, and the capability of pavement performance improvement, the recycling technology of asphalt is developed and applied for road rehabilitation and construction in the western countries over the past two decades. Cold recycled asphalt mixtures are bituminous materials normally made by mixing recycled aggregate from wasted asphalt with an asphalt emulsion and water at room temperature. This paper aims at investigating the properties of cold recycled asphalt mixture with alkali-activated filler according to wasted asphalt aggregate content. As a result, as the content of wasted asphalt aggregate increased, the marshall stability of cold recycled asphalt mixture decreased and void ratio increased. Also, grading curves for cold recycled asphalt mixture as specified in GR criteria were satisfied in all aggregate mixing conditions regardless of the wasted asphalt aggregate content.

  • PURPOSES : This study was performed to evaluate the possibility of Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) as a testing method that can predict cracking on pavement. METHODS : Three asphalt binders and one kind of aggregate were used in this study, and all asphalt mixtures were produced using Gyratory Compactor followed asphalt mix design. The ITS test was performed for the mixture which are artificially short-term aged using the oven. The ITS properties were analyzed by air void, compaction temperature, asphalt content, and asphalt binder. RESULTS : The results of this study indicated that (1) the compaction temperature did not show relationship with the ITS test; (2) there was no specific trend between the asphalt content and the ITS test; (3) the ITS could reveal the property of kinds of asphalt binders; (4) the asphalt mixture that were produced at optimum temperature suggested by manufacturer did not exhibit optimum result for all asphalt binder. CONCLUSIONS : The possibility of ITS was confirmed from this study for replacement of the Marshall Stability method. However, it needs to perform in further studies of aggregate and compaction property to suggest a new ITS standard value.

  • PURPOSES : The main purposes of this study are to examine the influences of polyethylene wax-based WMA additive on the optimum asphalt content of warm-recycled asphalt mixture based on the Marshall mix design and to evaluate performance of warm-recycled asphalt mixture containing 30% RAP with polyethylene wax-based WMA additive. METHODS: Physical and rheological properties of the residual asphalt were evaluated in terms of penetration, softening point, ductility and performance grade (PG) in order to examine the effects of polyethylene wax-based WMA additive on the residual asphalt. Also, To evaluate performance characteristics of the warm-recycled asphalt mixtures using polyethylene wax-based WMA additive along with a control hot-recycled asphalt mixture, indirect tensile strength test, modified Lottman test, dynamic immersion test, wheel tracking test and dynamic modulus test were conduced in the laboratory. RESULTS : Based on the limited laboratory test results, polyethylene wax-based WMA additive is effective to decrease mixing and compacting temperatures without compromising the volumetric characteristics of warm-recycled asphalt mixtures compared to hot-recycled asphalt mixture. Also, it doesn't affect the optimum asphalt content on recycled-asphalt mixture. All performance test results show that the performance of warm-recycled asphalt mixture using polyethylene wax-based WMA additive is similar to that of a control hot-recycled asphalt mixture. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the performance of warm-recycled asphalt mixture using polyethylene wax-based WMA additive is comparable to hot-recycled asphalt mixture.

  • Asphalt sealants for the crack repair of asphalt concrete road were prepared using waste lubricant oil in this work. The waste lubricant oil was compounded with asphalt(AP-5), SBS triblock copolymer, a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and antioxidants. Cone penetration, softening point, ductility, elongation by tensile adhesion, and resilience of asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Cone penetration of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste lubricant oil content while their softening point, ductility, and resilience decreased. By the addition of talc as an extender, softening point and resilience of asphalt sealants increased, but cone penetration, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those decreased with the proportion of talc content. The most economic asphalt sealant which could pass an ASTM specification could be manufactured by the big decrement of petroleum resin content.
