  • The graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometric determination of trace lead in water samples was studied using matrix modifiers. In order to modify the sample matrix, the type and optimum amount of the modifier were investigated with a given concentration of Pb solution. In fact, if the matrix is not modified, lead has low ashing and atomization temperatures as to give a low absorbance with bad reproducibility because of its volatility. Therefore, optimum modifiers should be used to stabilize the atomization. In this work, the ashing and atomization temperatures were raised from 400 and $1800^{\circ}C$, to 1,000 and $2000^{\circ}C$, by the addition of palladium to 50 ng/mL lead solution as a modifier. The concentration of palladium was 5.0 ${\mu}g/mL$ in the modified solution. Furthermore, if 1.5 ${\mu}g/mL$ of aluminum was mixed with the palladium modifier as an auxiliary modifier, the ashing temperature could be increased $150^{\circ}C$ additionally. With such a treatment, the sensitivity was improved more than 5 times of the solution unmodified and the reproducible results of less than 5% RSD were obtained in the samples of university's waste water and pipe-washing tap water. It could be concluded that this procedure was quantitative in the determination of trace lead from the recoveries of more than 88% obtained in the samples in which a given amount of lead was spiked.

  • Two fabrication approaches are proposed to planarize the sacrificial layer over hollow structures. One is the photoresist filling method that makes use of photolithography, thermal curing and plasma ashing. The other is the lamination method that is applying pressure and temperature to the organic film over the hollow structures. The fabrication results are compared with those of CMP process. Trenches and cavities with various dimensions have been made for the porposed process. Upon measuring the planarization levels, they are dependent on planarization methods and the geometrical size of hollow structures. The photoresist filling method is so strongly dependent on the width and depth of trenches that we have problems to use it for large dimensional trenches. To the contrary, the flatness of sacrificial layer over the trenches was found to be almost independent of trench dimensions for the lamination method. A CMP process shows the most excellent results, but the fabrication is complicated and the access to it is not so easy. It is important to choose the proper planarization method by considering the required flatness levels, materials to be planarized, and connection between the planarization step and the previous or the following process of it.

  • A study was carried out for the development of direct determination of antimony in high purity copper metal without preseparation. The large excess of copper seemed to be performed as the matrix modifier to enhance the absorbance of antimony in copper metal. Sensitivity enhancement of Sb was obtained at the condition of the ashing temperature of $600^{\circ}C(20s){\sim}700^{\circ}C(10s)$ rather than $1000^{\circ}C(20s){\sim}1100^{\circ}C(10s)$, and the atomization temperature of $2200^{\circ}C.$ The operating pressure of argon gas was readjusted to the optimum condition at 2.0 kg/$cm^2.$ The linearity of the Sb calibration graph could be obtained in the range of 20 ppb up to 200 ppb Sb in existence of 5,000 ppm Cu with the coefficient of variation of about 5%.

  • The direct determination of lead in the whole-blood by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometric analysis was carried out by using the sample which was diluted five-fold with 1% Triton X-100. Matrix modification was tried to remove the interferences of blood matrix and also to get the optimum analytical condition. Good agreement with certificated values in reference materials(bovine blood) supplied by comparison program in Japan was obstained when 1% $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ as matrix modifier and ashing temperature, $700^{\circ}C$ were used or 1% $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ and 0.1% $PdCl_2$ as matrix modifier and ashed at $700^{\circ}C$. Standard deviations were appeared as 2.2~6.3% for 1% $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ and 3.1~9.1% for 1% $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ and 0.1% $PdCl_2$ in the range of $31{\sim}624{\mu}gPb/l$.

  • An infrared image sensor is a core device in a thermal imaging system. The fabrication method of a focal plane array (FPA) is a key technology for a high resolution infrared image sensor. Each pixels in the FPA have $Si_3N_4/SiO_2$ membranes including legs to deposit bolometric materials and electrodes on Si readout circuits (ROIC). Instead of polyimide used to form a sacrificial layer, the feasibility of an amorphous silicon (${\alpha}-Si$) was verified experimentally in a $8{\times}8$ micro-bolometer array with a $50{\mu}m$ pitch. The elimination of the polyimide sacrificial layer hardened by a following plasma assisted deposition process is sometimes far from perfect, and thus requires longer plasma ashing times leading to the deformation of the membrane and leg. Since the amorphous Si could be removed in $XeF_2$ gas at room temperature, however, the fabricated micro-bolomertic structure was not damaged seriously. A radio frequency (RF) sputtered nickel oxide film was grown on a $Si_3N_4/SiO_2$ membrane fabricated using a low stress silicon nitride (LSSiN) technology with a LPCVD system. The deformation of the membrane was effectively reduced by a combining the ${\alpha}-Si$ and LSSiN process for a nickel oxide micro-bolometer.

  • Objectives : To obtain reference values for the pulmonary asbestos and non-asbestos fiber contents of residents in Korea and to compare them with similar results from Japan. Methods : The autopsied lung specimens from 22 deceased people (20 males and 2 females) in Pohang, without any known occupational history of asbestos exposure, were analyzed for incidence of asbestos and non-asbestos fibers by transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis after using low temperature ashing procedures. Results : Chrysotite fiber (46.2%) was the major fiber type found in the lungs of the subjects. The asbestos fiber concentrations found in males and females were $0.09\times10^6$ fiberss(g of dry lungs) and $0.30\times10^6$ fibers/(g of dry lungs), respectively, showing a geometric mean concentration $0.09\times10^6$ fibers/(g of dry lung tissue), due to the predominance of males in the sample. The non-asbestos fiber contents in males and females were $4.61\times10^6$ fibers/(g of dry lungs) and $17.79\times10^6$ fibers/(g of dry lungs), respectively, with a geometric mean concentration $5.21\times10^6$ fibers/(g of dry lung tissue). Conclusions : Residents in Pohang had significantly lower levels of both asbestos and non-asbestos fibers than urban residents in Korea. Furthermore, Koreans had significantly lower levels of both asbestos and non-asbestos fibers than Japanese.
