  • Various approaches have been proposed to predict the ash deposition (slagging and fouling) propensity of coal, which is essential in maintaining high efficiency and preventing corrosion/damage of a coal-fired boiler. The common method is to establish an index of the ash deposition propensity based on elementary coal composition and advanced characterization of ash properties, which is readily applicable to design, operation and maintenance of coal-fired boilers. Although many indexes have been developed for this purpose, their validity is still not satisfactory in actual applications to particular coal types or operating conditions. This paper reviews the status of predictive approaches for the ash deposition propensity, and assesses the performance of existing indexes by comparing the results for selected coals. This work will contribute to the development of a comprehensive and practical method for prediction of the ash deposition propensity.

  • Fallout ash is a notorious hazard that can have a variety of damages on agriculture and infrastructure and, most notably to aviation and human health. This study discusses the design of a conceptual model to aid in modeling the dispersal and deposition of ash from Mt. Baekdu volcano. It includes a discussion of assumptions and boundary conditions of the model as well as a detailed diagram of the conceptual model, complete with input parameters, units and equations. The two main processes contained within the model are the dispersal and deposition of ash, the outputs obtained from running the model, if designed, would be the total amount of fine ash contained in the eruption column, distance travelled by ash and ash thickness at surface.

  • In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of methods to predict ash behavior in utility boilers. This paper provides an overview of methods used to assess and predict ash formation and deposition. It has discussed some of the key problems associated with the formation and deposition of ash during the combustion of pulverized coal. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of ash formation, transport, growth, and strength development, there is still much work to be done. There is a need to develop quantitative relationships between the characteristics of the entrained ash and the physical properties of ash deposits that influence deposit growth, strength development, and cleanability. Also data from bench-scale, pilot-scale, and full-scale units are needed in order to determine operating conditions which will minimize deposition problems, maximize efficiency, and reduce emissions.

  • To analyze the characteristics of deposition and dispersion of volcanic ash emitted from Mt. Kirishima on January 26, 2011, several numerical simulations were carried out by using the numerical models including Weather and Research Forecast (WRF) and FLEXPART. The dispersion of ash located under 1 km high tends to be concentrated along the prevailing wind direction on January 26 2011. On the other hand, volcanic ash released on the following day spreads to Kirishima bay due to the intensified high pressure air mass in southern Kyushu. When Siberian air mass was intensified January 26, 2011, the deposition of volcanic ash is concentrated restrictedly in the narrow area along the wind direction of the downwind side of Mt. Kirishima. The development of high pressure air mass over the eruption area tends to induce the intensified horizontal diffusion of volcanic ash. Since the estimated deposition of volcanic ash is agreed well with observed values, the proposed numerical simulation is reasonable to use the assessment on the behavior of volcanic ash.

  • The use of biomass is increasing as a response to the convention on climate change. In Korea, a method applied to replace fossil fuels is using wood chips in a cogeneration plant. To remove air pollutants generated by burning wood chips, a selective denitrification facility (Selective catalytic reduction, SCR) is installed downstream. However, problems such as ash deposition and descaling of the equipment surface have been reported. The cause is thought to be unreacted ammonia slip caused by ammonia ions injected into the reducing agent and metal corrosion caused by an acidic environment. Element analysis confirmed that ash contained alkali metals and sulfur that could cause catalyst poisoning, leading to an increase in the size of ash particle and deposition. Measurement of the size of ash deposited inside the facility confirmed that the size of ash deposited on the catalyst was approximately three times larger than the size of generally formed ash. Therefore, it was concluded that a reduction in pore area of the catalyst by ash deposition on the surface of the catalyst could lead to a problem of increasing differential pressure in a denitrification facility.

  • The development of a low cost catalyst with high performance and small amount of carbon deposition on catalyst from toluene steam reforming were investigated by using coal ash as a support material. Ni-loaded coal ash catalyst showed similar catalytic activity for toluene steam reforming compared with the Ni/Al2O3. At 800 ℃, the toluene conversion was 77% for Ni/TAL, 68% for Ni/KPU and 78% for Ni/Al2O3. Ni/TAL showed similar toluene conversion to Ni/Al2O3. However, Ni/KPU produced higher hydrogen yield at relatively lower toluene conversion. Ni/KPU catalyst showed a remarkable ability of suppressing the carbon deposition. The difference in coke deposition and hydrogen yield is due to the composition of KPU ash (Ca and Fe) which increase coke resistance and water gas shift reaction. This study suggests that coal ash catalysts have great potential for the application in the steam reforming of biomass tar.

  • Estimating damage in each sector that can be caused by volcanic ash deposition, is very important to prepare the volcanic ash disaster. In this study, we showed predicted-Korean-volcanic-ash damage of each sector by using volcanic ash diffusion simulation and spatial-data-based volcanic ash damage sector in previous study. To this end, volcanic ash related base maps were generated by collecting and processing spatial information data. Finally, we showed Korean-volcanic-ash-deposition damages by sector using the collected Mt. Aso volcanic ash scenarios via overlapping analysis. As a result, volcanic-ash-related damages were expected to occur in the 162 and 134 districts for each Aso volcanic ash scenarios, since those districts exceeds the minimum volcanic ash damage criterion of 0.01 mm. Finally, we compared possible volcanic ash damages by sectors using collected and processed spatial data, after selecting administrative districts(Scenario 190805- Kangwon-do, Kyungsangbuk-do; Scenario 190811-Chuncheon-si, Hongcheon-si) with the largest amount of volcanic ash deposition.

  • Ash deposition of heat exchange boiler, caused mainly by accumulation of particulate matter, reduces heat transfer of the boiler system. Heat and mass transfer through porous media such as ash deposits mainly depend on the microstructure of deposited ash. Therefore, in this study, we investigated microstructural and thermal properties of the ash deposited on the boiler tube. Samples for this research were obtained from the fuel economizer tube in an industrial waste incinerator. To characterize microstructures of the ash deposit samples, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET analysis were employed. The results revealed that it had a porous structure with small particles mostly of less than a few micrometers; the contents of Ca and S were 19.3, 22.6% and 18.5, 18.7%, respectively. Also, the results showed that it consisted mainly of anhydrite ($CaSO_4$) crystals. - The thermal conductivities of the ash deposit sample obtained from the economizer tube in industrial waste incinerator were measured to be 0.63 and 0.54 W/mK at $200^{\circ}C$, which were about 100 times less than the thermal conductivity (61.32 W/mK) of the boiler tube itself, indicating that ash deposition on the boiler tube was closely related to a decrease in boiler heat transfer.

  • Recently, much research has been put into finding the causes and solutions of slagging/fouling problems that occur at the end of the boiler. This slagging/fouling, caused by low-rank coal's ash, disturbs the thermal power and greatly reduces efficiency. In environmental aspects, such as NOx pollution, governments have been implementing restrictions on the quantity of emission gases that can be released into the atmosphere. To solve these problems, research on Ash Free Coal (AFC), which eliminates ash from low-rank coal, is in progress. AFC has advantages over similar high-rank coals because it increases the heating value of the low grade coal, reduces the contaminants that are emitted, and decreases slagging/fouling problems. In this study, using a DTF, the changes of NOx emissions, unburned carbon, and the characteristics of ash deposition were identified. KCH raw coal, AFC extracted from KCH, residue coal, Glencore, and Mixed Coal (Glencore 85wt% and residue coal 15wt%) were studied. Results showed that AFC had a significantly lower emission of NOx compared to that of the raw coal and residue coal. Also, the residue coal showed a higher reactivity compared to raw coal. And finally, In the case of the residue coal and mixed coal, they showed a lower ash deposition than that of low-rank coal.

  • In pulverized coal fired boilers, slagging and fouling may cause significant effect on the operational life of boiler. As increasing a consumption of low rank coal, slagging and fouling are main issues in pulverized coal combustion. This study predicts ash deposition propensity in a 0.7 MW pilot-scale furnace. Slagging model is employed as a User-Defined Function (UDF) of FLUENT and validated against measurement and prediction. The results show good agreement compared with experiment. There is need to development of a pulverized coal combustion and slagging analysis at low coal.
