  • Spills of $M/V$ Hebei Spirit on $7^{th}$ December 2007 caused a seriously damage to the ecosystem of Korean coast. Of these, microbial communities (i.e., attached benthic micro-algae) were reported to be sentive to the environmental change so it can be used for ecological risk assessment. Our experiment was designed to examine the ecological risk assessments for oil pollutant using benthic attached algal community on the artificial substrates of acrylic plates. Field monitoring in the culture system was conducted in Jangmok Bay. The abundances of attached micro-algae on artificial substrates gradually increased with increasing of sampling times. Among them, diatoms were the most important colonizer of coastal water, with the genera $Cylindrotheca$ and $Navicular$ most abundant. In particular, developed the culture system has correctly measured qualitative and quantitative abundance of attached micro-algae because same acrylic plates as artificial substrates were used. Thus, this culture system may be directly applied to the ecological risk experiments of microbial community structure from oil pollutants.

  • The artificial upwelling of deep seawater increases primary production. This study conducted a lab-scale experiment to investigate the growth of phytoplankton with the mixing ratio of deep and surface seawater. The chlorophyll content in the sample of pure deep seawater was highest, regardless of the phytoplankton groups. Nutrients contained in the deep seawater positively influenced the growth of phytoplankton. The optimum mixture to apply in an artificial upwelling system was a 1:1 ratio of deep and surface seawater. An experiment considering other environmental conditions, such as luminance and specific gravity, should be performed.

  • For water barrier and reinforcing grout in soft ground, the verification of durability was conducted over the initial and long-term ages under various curing conditions. The grout was made of water glass system, fast-hardening mineral (FHM) system, and acrylic polymer system. There were three types of curing conditions that were tab water curing, artificial seawater curing, and atmospheric curing. And the various tests were performed for each sample by age, uniaxial compressive strength, length change, and weight change. As artificial seawater, MgCl2 and MgSO4 aqueous solutions were prepared and used, respectively. As the test results, the fast-hardening mineral system and acrylic polymer system were cured stably without significant change in durability in tap water and artificial sea water, whereas water glass system showed a very rapid drop in durability under artificial sea water conditions compared to tap water. In atmospheric curing conditions, durability is lowered compared to water curing in all cases, and in particular, the weight loss in the FHM system and water glass system is about 62% and 60%, respectively, resulting in a significant decrease in durability.

  • This study examined the ef ects of freshwater discharge by artificial dikes from the Kanwol and Bunam lakes on the dynamics in the Chunsu Bay, Yellow Sea, Korea, during the summer season based on three-dimensional numerical modeling experiments. Model performances were evaluated in terms of skill scores for tidal elevation, velocity, temperature, and salinity and these scores mostly exceeded 90 %. The variability in residual currents before and after the freshwater discharge was examined. The large amount of lake water discharge through artificial dikes may result in a dramatically changed density field in the Chunsu Bay, leading to an estuarine circulation system. The density-driven current formed as a result of the freshwater inflow through the artificial dikes (Kanwol/Bunam) caused a partial change in the tidal circulation and a change in the scale and location of paired residual eddies. The stratification formed by strengthened static stability following the freshwater discharge led to a dramatic increase in the Richardson number and lasted for a few weeks. The strong stratification suppressed the vertical flux and inhibited surface aerated water mixing with bottom water. This phenomenon would have direct and indirect impacts on the marine environment such as hypoxia/anoxia formation at the bottom.

  • Recently, researches on the prediction of sea water temperature using artificial intelligence models has been actively conducted in Korea. However, most researches in the sea around the Korean peninsula mainly focus on predicting sea surface temperatures. Unlike previous researches, this research predicted the vertical sea water temperature profile of the East Sea, which is very important in submarine operations and anti-submarine warfare, using XBT(eXpendable Bathythermograph) data and machine learning models(RandomForest, XGBoost, LightGBM). The model was trained using XBT data measured from sea surface to depth of 200m in a specific area of the East Sea, and the prediction accuracy was evaluated through MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and vertical sea water temperature profile graphs.

  • 0.087 wt.% Gd-lean duplex stainless steels were inert arc-melted and cast in a mold. The micro-hardnesses of the rolling, transverse, short transverse directions were 258.5, 292.3, 314.7 HV, respectively. The 33% cold rolled specimen had the crystallographic texture that mainly (100) pole was concentrated to normal direction and (110) pole was concentrated in the center of normal and rolling directions. The corrosion potential and corrosion rate in artificial sea water were in the range of $105.6-221.6mV_{SHE}$, $0.59-1.06mA/cm^2$, respectively. The friction coefficient and wear loss of the 0.087 wt.% Gd-lean duplex stainless steels in artificial sea water were about 67% and 65% lower than in air, whereas, the wear efficiency was 22% higher. The corrosion and wear behaviors of the 0.087 wt.% Gd-lean duplex stainless steels significantly depended on the gadolinium phases.

  • Ti-Al-Cr-N thin layer was prepared on Fe-Si thin sheet by arc ion plating to improve corrosion and mechanical properties. The compositions ratios of Fe : Cr : Al : Ti : Si : N of the thin layers at $500^{\circ}C$ was 1.24 : 0.56 : 36.82 : 32.72 : 0.59 : 28.07 [wt.%], respectively. The higher arc ion plating temperature was, the higher corrosion resistance and nano-hardness were observed due to chromium content. Corrosion potential and corrosion rate in artificial sea water of the coating layer were in the range of $-39mV_{SHE}$ and $2mA/cm^2$, respectively. Passivity was not observed in the artificial sea water. Nano-hardnesses of the thin layers was increased by adding Cr from 23.6 to 25.8 [GPa]. The friction coefficients and fatigue limits of the layers were 0.388, 0.031, respectively.

  • Recently the ground-water development using the ground-water dam was proposed for the efficient use of the limited water resources especially for islands or seaside area. But in operating the ground-water dam adjacent to seaside an excessive pumping causes the sea-water intrusion which is caused by the drawdown of ground-water level. In this study, the effect of the recharging well method to reduce the sea-water intrusion was evaluated, and was applied to the downstream of the Ssangcheon ground-water dam site. The SUTRA model was used to simulate the salinity transport in the unsaturated and saturated zone. As the results, the effect of recharging method on the downstream of the ground-water dam was proven to be very efficient to reduce the salinity in the pumping well, and especially the best result was shown at the case that the recharging well is located at 40∼60m from the cutoff wall and the recharging rate is up to 6∼7%.

  • Artificial upwelling structure has been set up in sea mount. Bottom water can upwelling euphotic zone. Plentiful nutrient included in bottom water could not only enhance primary production but also expect food chain reaction and gathering fish. This study explain flowing features subject to porosity changes according to the material and shape of artificial upwelling structure. As a result, the upward flux is getting decreased while the porosity is increasing. And it figured out when the upward flux was decreased, the downward flux was also decreased. Futhermore, it was confirmed that the best efficiency of upwelling flux was shown up when the porosity was 10% according to the volume of artificial upwelling structure in case of 20% of porosity, it also has a good efficiency in comparison with impermeable artificial upwelling structure. Therefore, to build the artificial upwelling structure, It is encouraged to design it less than 20% of porosity for the best performance.
